The short-lived James Hazen Hyde Prize was established to acknowledge the best work on Franco-American relations or on the history of France in visa mer the nineteenth century. The prize was created with a bequest amounting to $1,000 in 1946 by James Hazen Hyde, a historian of nineteenth-century Franco-American relations and a life member of the AHA. Council originally intended to offer the prize at regular intervals, but it transpired that the award was granted only in 1948.
