- Om mitt bibliotek
- The books included here are those from the original library of the Providence Library Company, purchased 1753-1758. A fire at the Providence Court House destroyed most of the collection on Christmas Eve, 1758; some seventy volumes out on loan at the time survived the fire.
Those titles from the Founders' Collection still in the collections of the Providence Athenaeum are included here with the Athenaeum's call number in the Comments field. Other titles which survived the fire (as designed in a 1768 catalogue of the collection) but which no longer are held by the Athenaeum are also included here.
Tags have been added as appropriate.
More on the Founders' Collection can be found here.
Questions? Comments? Concerns? Do you know of additional books which should be included here? Please contact Libraries of Early America coordinator Jeremy Dibbell. - Om mig
- The Providence Athenaeum, founded as The Athenaeum in 1836, is an independent, member-supported library open to the public. Its progenitors were two earlier libraries, The Providence Library Company, founded in 1753 and the Providence Athenaeum, founded in 1831; it became The Providence Athenaeum by amendment to its charter in 1850.
