I like my books and tend to rate the ones I document here rather highly. I especially like to list books that few others have read and to observe my own parsimony in choosing what to include here from my own shelves. A confession: sometimes I list books that I've read but don't own. In my defense, I buy these sometimes long after reading them (for the first time).

I'm an anthropologist and librarian supporting research and teaching about Africa at a large public university. I enjoy managing and building collections (yes, I get paid to buy books...eat your heart out), sharing what I know about libraries, anthropology, and Africa, learning more from the many people I encounter in my job, and helping users find what they need. Along the way I find time to learn and appreciate what's available in my own institution (including rare books and antique maps) and elsewhere. I work for library users, while at the same time unveiling some of the mysteries of libraries so they can navigate this complex institution on their own.
