Om migSo many books, so little time...
Om mitt bibliotekScience fiction, fantasy, and a few other odds and ends.
For fantasy, I prefer works set in a created world; urban fantasies, portal fantasies where the fantasy world is an allegory of or foil to the protagonist's life on Earth, alternate histories, secret histories, and retellings of Earth history with the names changed are hard sells to me for that reason. For science fiction, much the same, I prefer a space opera or distant spacefaring future- alternate pasts, time travel, and modern or near-future Earth settings are hard sells to me.
I like to read character-driven stories, more than stories that show off the author's ideas and depth of world-building; military science fiction and fantasy are hard sells to me, as is extrapolative science fiction that centers around genius, misunderstood rugged individualists. In fact, rugged individualists in general are a hard sell; I like to read about protagonists with biological or adoptive or chosen families, friends, colleagues, and others they care about.
I don't mind romance, but I would love to see more asexual and contentedly single characters in the genre, and I draw the line at "alpha males." In fact, I am liable to put down most any book that refers to humans as "males" and "females."
Things that are likely sell me on a science fiction or fantasy book: lesbian or bisexual women as leads or major characters, books where none of the main characters are human (eg Laurie J. Marks' Triad books, Eleanor Arnason's Hwarhath stories, Steven Brust's Khaavren romances, and Jacqueline Lichtenberg's Sime~Gen universe), and high-magic or space opera settings.
Come chat with me in my 2014 reading journal! Questions and discussion welcome for any book in my library, even those I've not read yet :)
