He always tells me that I have sisu (1), and that I can do anything. Comments: May Amelia is an extremely likeable character who is truly loved by her close knit family. You really feel like you're living on the Nasel River and going on an adventure with May Amelia and her best brother Wilbert. Summary: Fearing that her legal guardian plans to abandon her to return to France (1), ten-year-old aspiring scientist Lucky Trimble determines to run away while also continuing to seek the Higher Power that will bring stability to her life. Quote (1), 80: "The anonymous people struggled with the next step after rock bottom (1), the getting-control-of-your-life step. Lucky pounde the Formica table with both fists (1), which made HMS Begle leap to his feet and look at Lucky worriedly. It's almost impossible to get control of your life when you're only ten. It's other people (1), because they can abandon you." Lucky and all the other characters in the book such as (1), and Short Sammy are very memorable and you wish that you could meet them after reading the book. (1), stop her mad cat from terrorizing the neighborhood animals (1), I won't get a wink. I'm sleeping in here. Shove on over Wilbert. Wilbert moves over and now there are three children in a bed meant for two. I've been telling Wilbert here that I want to leave the farm (1), and win the love of handsome hunk Robbie. Summary: After spending her summer running the family farm and training the quarterback (Brian) for her school's rival football team (1), sixteen-year-old D.J. decides to go out for the sport herself (1), not anticipating the reactions of those around her. Not just the old man and his village. He didn't want me to be good anymore." (1), Children's Historical Fiction; Ages: 9-12; Family Life; New Jersey 1953; Itailian Americans; Family Secrets; A girl truly loved by both sides of her family. Summary: As she turns twelve during the summer of 1953 (1), Penny gains new insights into herself and her family while also learning a secret about her father's death. Quote (1), page 129: "At least I'm not mean (1), twirling a finger by her head. "Crazy as a loon." That's it. It's one thing to pick on me (1), but not Uncle Dominic. "Don't talk about my uncle (1), standing up. "What are you gonna do about it (1), huh?" she asks with a smirk. "This (1), just the way Frankie taught me." Comments: Holm's historical fiction contains real pictures from the past and has spunky girls who have best friends who are boys.
