I spend way too much time (and $$$) in Powell's. Never have any problem finding more books than I can carry. However, bleuroses asked for alternatives, so here are a few more independent bookstores:

Annie Bloom's Books - new books only
7834 SW Capitol Highway (503) 246-0053
open 7 days, 9am-10pm
www.annieblooms.com

Cameron's Books & Magazines - used books & magazines
336 SW 3rd & Stark (503) 228-2391
open 10-6 Mon-Sat, 12-6 Sun
Cameron's claims to be the oldest bookstore in Portland, open since 1938. Located about 1/2 mile SE from Powell's main store. More magazines than books, mustier and much less organized than Powell's, but you can find treasures there. No website, but you can search their catalog by author or title on Biblio.
www.biblio.com/bookstores/camerons.html

Daedalus Books - used and rare
2074 NW Flanders (503) 274-7742
open 10-6 Tue-Sat, closed Sun-Mon
Scholarly titles, especially history, literary studies, judaica, medicine and linguistics, philosophy and classical studies. Lots of poetry books, and occasional poetry readings, although they don't list that as a specialty. Located about 1/2 mile NW from Powell's main store. No dedicated website; limited browse and search capabilities at AbeBooks.

Paper Moon Books - used & rare
4707 SE Belmont (503) 239-8848
open 11-6 Tue-Sat
Specializing in children's literature, art, music, cookbooks. Limited selection, but they do have some treasures. No website.

And a few I have never visited.

Great Northwest Bookstore
3314 SW First Ave. (503) 223-8098
open 9-6 Mon-Fri, closed weekends
http://www.greatnorthwestbooks.com/
Used books and paper ephemera, specializing in Western literature and Americana. How have I missed this one all this time? I'll have to check this out, but they are open only during work hours.

In Other Words Women's Books and Resources
8 NE Killingsworth St. (503) 232-6003
www.inotherwords.org

New Renaissance Bookshop
1338 NW 23rd Ave. at Pettygrove (503) 224-4929
Parking available at NW 23rd & Overton (if you don't know Portland, the NW streets are in alphabetic order from south to north)
http://www.newrenbooks.com/
They bill themselves as "Oregon's largest metaphysical book & gift store".

The All-Oregon website has a more comprehensive list, but no specifics, no links, and no indication of updates.

Edited to fix the links

Dear oregonobsessionz!

Finally made it to California and have settled in and I'm only just getting back to this thread now!

A huge THANKs for your list of bookstores. I hope to plan a road trip up the coast perhaps in the Spring and stop at some of those on your list.

Hope you've had a great summer and are doing well!

Cate

I like Second Glance Books in the Hollywood neighborhood. It is small and mostly (entirely??) devoted to used books. The selection is not enormous, but they have a couple of aisles of literary fiction (my browsing choice) and the prices are reasonable.

Second Glance Books
4500 NE Sandy Boulevard
Portland, OR 97213
