My place is pretty much overflowing with books (and there are more caches squirreled away elsewhere) - so it's about time to excavate Mt. TBR and see what treasures have escaped me while I've been distracted by shiny new books!

Hopefully this will help keep me focused on culling down the pile to something more manageable!

Artefact The Magic Knot by Helen Scott Taylor - Magic Knot, Book 01

Trove: E-book
Status: Preserved for context

Fieldnotes: First in a contemporary paranormal romance series - unexpected as from the cover I had expected historical paranormal.

Features:
1 Cornish Pisky/Accountant
2 Identical Twin Leprechaun Sidhe (but 0 Mistaken Identities) of which 1 Brooding Overprotective Hero and 1 Hedonistic Devil-May-Care Hotter than Hero Sequel-Baiting Sibling
1 Not!Vampire
1 Eeevil Druid
1 Faery Queen
1 Deck of Tarot Cards (That Work!)
Several Sets of Magical Stones
4 Very Bad Parents
2 Conjugation-Avoiding Irish Accents
1 Attempt at Sex to Unlock Your Destiny, and
1 Not!Threesome

Some interesting snippets about the tarot and esoterica, but on the whole I liked the hero's twin brother much better than the hero whom I found rather judgmental. I'll keep hold of this one until I read Michael's story and decide where the series falls.

Oh, I love your review style! Those Conjugation-Avoiding Irish Accents get me every time. :)

ETA: Looks like we have some similar tastes. I had a peek at your profile -- eee! Horatio!

Artefact: Tomorrow, When the War Began - Tomorrow, Book 01

Trove: Paperback
Status: Preserved for context; Watch the Movie

Fieldnotes:

Features:
1 Secret Camp in the Outback
1 Week of Lazy Teenaged Squabbling
1 Mysterious Invasion by Soldiers of Unknown Origin
1 Cunning Plan for Deliberate Sabotage
2 Gunshot Wounds
2 Kick-ass Explosions
1 Hidden Cache of Historical Documents
1 Very Confused Love Triangle

The excavation proceeded quite slowly through the layer of teenaged squabbling until the invasion and adventure finally came to light. At that point, things became much more interesting, what with the pilfering of heavy machinery and the shooting and the exploding of things. While I'm not terribly enamored of any of the characters (or Ellie's tendency to ponder in print the hotness of buddies Homer and Lee), I'm sticking with it for the fireballs - because who hasn't wanted to blow up a riding lawnmower?

Artefact: Girl's Guide to Witchcraft by Mindy Klasky - Jane Madison, Book 01

Trove: Paperback
Status: Museum - Rotating Collection

Fieldnotes:

1 Shakespeare-quoting Librarian
1 Set of Period Costumes
1 Very Bad (Ex)Boyfriend
1 Hunky Professor
1 Cache of Magic Books & Objects
1 Mischievous Formerly Feline Familiar
1 Delectable Warder
1 Love Spell Gone Awry
1 Kitchen Mishap that Puts Bridget Jones' Blue Soup to Shame
1 Long-Lost Relative
1 Bitchy Yet Heartwarming Family Reunion
Several Odd Promises
Several Bouts of Mojito Therapy

I had a lot of fun with this book, and it's earned itself a place on my shelves next to the similar Enchanted Inc. I loved the bits about crystal magic and am looking forward to the next in the series (which I now have on order).

Artefact: The Abduction of Julia by Karen Hawkins - Abduction/Seduction - Book 01

Trove: Paperback
Status: Auction to a Worthy Collector

Fieldnotes:

1 Accidental Abduction
1 Marriage of Convenience
1 Absurdly Large Fortune
Several Stodgy Executors
2 Gorgeous But Devious Cousins (of which 1 Reformable Sequel Bait)
1 Battle Axe Old Lady to put Dame Judi Dench to Shame
1 Homely Urchin
3 Overly Protective Servants
1 Sequel Bait Best Friend
1 Lovable Nitwit
Several Ill-Conceived Charity Rescue Attempts
Several Nigh-Scandals
1 Very Scandalous Portrait

Enjoyed this enough to read on (Sequel-Baits are very intriguing), but not enough for this to live on my keeper shelf. Still Karen Hawkins is definitely an author I'll be picking up again in future.

Artefact: Mad About the Duke by Elizabeth Boyle - Bachelor Chronicles, Book 06; Widows of Standon, Book 02

Trove: Paperback
Status: Permanent Collection

Fieldnotes:

2 Conveniently Deceased Very Bad Spouses
1 Very Bad Guardian
1 Mistaken Identity due to Sartorial Shabbiness
1 Masquerade Ball
1 List Containing 2 Unfortunate (though Eligible) Matrimonial Prospects

1 Very Intentionally Spilt Tea
1 Very Improper Picnic
1 Very Improper Gown

Light and frothy fun. No angst to speak of (thank goodness), just a lot of giddy falling in love. I adore Elizabeth Boyle!! Keeping this one.

Artefact: Lucky Break by Esther Freud

Trove: Paperback
Status: Rubbish Heap

Fieldnotes:
3 Self-Absorbed Unsympathetic Struggling Actors/Actresses
1 Pretentious Drama School
1 Obligatory Casting Couch
1 Obligatory Will She Won't She Nude Scene
1 Titular Lucky Break
1 Nagging BabyMomma with Crushed Dreams
1 Pseudo-Homosexual Encounter Never Spoken of Again
Several Inexplicable Time Jumps
Several Very Bad Friends
Several Bouts of Ill-Considered Bad Behavior (Especially in the Bedroom)
including Several Bouts of Adultery/Aiding and Abetting Therein

I was hoping to read a more grown-up version of Fame! But really, I got the 'literary' navel-gazing version of self-absorbed unlikeable protagonists doing self-absorbed unlikeable things. Very little love of the stage or the craft or of cameraderie crept in. Definitely not for me.

Artefact: Notorious Eliza by Barbara Monajem

Trove: E-book (Novella)
Status: Museum - Rotating collection

Fieldnotes:
1 Scandalous Widow who Paints Nudes
1 Charming Friend of her now-Deceased Husband
1 Very Scandalous Self-Portrait
2 Deceased Spouses (good)
2 Adorable Moppets In Need of an Extra Parent
1 Mob of Busybodies
1 Very Unladylike Painting Job
1 No-Longer-Quite-So-Lecherous Aristocrat

A sweet novella from the Harlequin Undone! line most notable for both protagonists having had a perfectly healthy happy relationship with their now-unfortunately-deceased spouses. Far less angst here. Enjoyable, but a bit rushed at the ending (due to length constraints - that is not a euphemism).
