Any reason for PB's forthcoming title, The Sack of Bath, being sold for only £1.00...?? Pre-ordered titles are usually discounted, but not by that much!

Interesting. It seems as if it must be an error ... but you never know! In any case, I've placed my order. We'll see what happens!

That is weird - I have also placed an order *fingers crossed*

At first I thought it was just the Book Depository selling it for that price but a quick check and Amazon UK is the same. Very strange....

There must be something weird going on...I might order it from Amazon though too as they have a pre-order price guarantee:

"Whenever you pre-order a book, CD, video, DVD, software, or video game, the price you pay will be the lowest price offered by Amazon.co.uk between the time you placed your order and up to and including the release date."

I also ordered it today, before coming on this site. I pre-ordered the other two as well because on Book Depository they are only $14 each. So all three for $30 and no postage. I paid for them already on my cc so hopefully no price change! I wasn't planning on buying anymore books for a while but at those prices I really couldn't resist.

Getting in on the excitement, I pre-ordered it from Book Depository this minute!! Barb, I must have missed it somewhere so please, what are the other two new releases??

romain, there is an expression, 'You have to spend to save' :)

Cate, the other two are Miss Buncle, Married and Midsummer Night in the Workhouse. I already have an old paperback (non-Persephone) edition of Miss Buncle, Married, but I can't find Midsummer Night on either Amazon.co.uk or the UK Book Depository. :(

I don't know what made me check Book Depository yesterday. Perhaps it was the dreadful weather and being stuck indoors. Anyway when I scrolled down and saw the new titles I could not believe the price of the Sack of Bath. So I e-mailed them and this evening I find a reply confirming that the price is correct at $1.59 or 1BP. Presumably a promotion. So we can all go for it with a clear conscience.

Thanks for emailing them, Barbara. Love a clear conscience! I noticed The Home-Maker (Classics edition) is also available for pre-order at TBD. Unfortunately it is not $1 ;)

The Sack of Bath appears to be a polemic about architecture in the city of Bath. If I can get it for completeness' sake at £1, I probably will, but not otherwise. I would like my own copy of Miss Buncle Married and the Athill short stories.

I agree Elk - there has to be a reason they are giving it away, although the one review on Amazon I read made it sound quite political and ecological. The way I see it, never look a gift horse etc, but also at some point I will wind up buying it just to complete the collection, so why not get it at a rock bottom price yada yada yada :)

I completely agree. It's well worth £1 to add another lovely grey spine to my collection.

It does seem an odd choice for a Persephone....

Below are some comments on The Sack of Bath

In the 1960s and early 1970s some parts of Bath were unsympathetically redeveloped, resulting in the loss of some 18th- and 19th-century buildings. This process was largely halted by a popular campaign which drew strength from the publication of Adam Fergusson's The Sack of Bath.115

This review is from: The Sack of Bath: And After (Paperback)
There's no summary of this book here at all and I thought the best way to encourage others to investigate the title would be to provide the information as printed at the back of the publication.
--------Quotation-------- Much of the minor architecture of Georgian Bath was wrongly and needlessly destroyed: wrongly, because of its sociological importance, and because of its vital contribution to the city's character; needlessly, because with the energy and will, much or most might have been saved and renovated, and that character preserved. Adam Fergusson's classic polemic, "The Sack of Bath", was first published in 1973. It was a record of how, in the space of a few years, and in the name of modernisation and redevelopment, a complete period city was robbed of its architectural "undergrowth"; and of how the ugly new developments, out of harmony, out of proportion, and out of place, wrecked a unique part of the European heritage.

Adam Fergusson's book, with its appalling photographic reminders, is now reissued with Tim Mowl's trenchant appraisal of the situation today. There are, as Mowl acknowledges, real successes to report. But "The Sack of Bath - And After" is a timely plea for public watchfulness against the Philistine and the environmental marauder. No one should forget the sorry truth that taste has no monopoly on influence. -------End of Quotation-----------

This book should be more well known and recognised. Here we can learn a great deal about our city landscapes, inside and outside Bath. Very few people seem to know about the vandalisation of Bath in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. This book is very easy to read and provides a unique background to the minds of city planners and developers.

Both Amazon and Book Depository have sorted out the prices so if you didn't get an order in, you'll have to pay the full price now :(

My Amazon copy arrived yesterday - I'm glad I didn't pay a more expensive price as it isa very slim volume!

Not so much a book as a pamphlet? Or slim as in The Victorian Chaise Longue which has 99 pages. Book Depository e-mailed that mine is on its way so I will find out for myself in a week or two.

Slimmer than VCL I think, haven't counted pages, but I did notice that it has lots of photographs which is a first for Persephone I think...

26Ygraine

It looks a bit like a facsimile of the original book as it doesn't have the usual Persephone typeface and layout. The main body of text is 77 pages long, so it's very short indeed.

I pre-ordered & paid for a copy, and today, BookDepository sent an email canceling my order with refund because they ran out of copies! However, I'm not overly disappointed after reading about this edition above.

I'm actually quite pleased that it's a slim volume. I'm not sure I'd want to wade through 200-300 pages on this topic but, as it is, it's very inviting!

I was trying to be brave.... I was pretty crushed that they ran out of copies. Bath (and St. Ives and Cornwall, etc) are on my list especially when we win the Masterpiece Theatre Downton Abbey competition! :~)

My copy arrived today. Color me different but I think it looks interesting. But even if it's a crashing bore I am pleased to have a lovely new Persephone for $1.59.
