I'm writing a context essay on O. Henry's 1909 short story "A Municipal Report." I've already submitted an abstract for it and bound myself to discussing how, after Reconstruction, some freed slaves remained loyal to their former masters, the southern aristocracy attempted to maintain their previous social positions even under the pressure of decaying wealth, and the events of the Civil War remained in public memory decades after the war's conclusion.

I'm looking for literary works, preferably from around the same period as O. Henry's story, that also reflect the above. Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," for example, reflects the southern aristocracy bit, but I'm stuck as to the others. Any suggestions?
