Try an anthology. I discovered a lot of what I like through the New Oxford Book of English Verse, a book I have owned for years and poured over many an hour, skipping if I didn't like something or it was too long. One of the nice things about the Oxford book is that it includes poems that were famous in their day but forgotten now. And it's a good introduction to major names...Eliot, Milton, Tennyson, Hopkins.
There are tons of anthologies: American verse, modern verse. Pick one and see who and what you like.

For anthologies of (fairly) contemporary poetry, I like:
The Vintage Book of Contemporary World Poetry
The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry
New American Poets of the 90s
