Hi all! I keep stumbling across mentions and recommendations to Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky but am finding it hard to track down his works and don't want to invest too much time and money on spec. Has anyone read him and does anyone have any thoughts?

The Letter Killers Club, recently translated by Joanne Turnbull and published by New York Review of Books Classics, is in my opinion his best book and does a good job of showcasing his range.

Thanks! That was the one that was calling to me - maybe I'll treat myself after Christmas!

>6 languagehat: will pop over and have a look! Many years down the line from my original post here I have read everything I could get in translation and now have some non-fiction lined up. What a wonderful writer he is!!!!

*bump*

Just to mention that more of SK's works have made it into translation via Columbia University Press's Russian Library imprint (which is most definitely worth checking out). There is a non-fiction collection, Countries That Don't Exist, and a new collection called Stravaging "Strange". The latter is particularly exciting for fans of SK's work as it has more extracts from his notebooks (there are some in Countries) and also extracts from a memoir by his partner, Anna Bovshek - I highly recommend it!!
