RoseRed again and will again try for 20 books off my own bookshelves. Again I will try not only to read 20 TBRs but read 20 more books generally than I add to the shelves. That means I will also count new books coming into the house.

Resume for 2012: The library broke my neck somehow, as I read nearly as much books from there as from my own piles. Also acquired quite a lot of books (for my standards) in December, so I couldn't make a dent in the pile last year, but got a few more books than I started with.

Rules for 2013: I will count all books as a ROOT that entered the shelves before January 1 2013.

Ticker:
Since I use my ticker for counting both incoming books and ROOTs I will not post it over at the ticker thread, to prevent misinterpretations. Olease don't use for setting up monthly numbers, I'll post them over at the monthly thread, or uses the stats at the end of this post. Thanks.

While reading through all the other participant's I am getting happier by the minute that I don't own any kind of e-reader yet... well actually we've got a tablet but somehow I don't use it for reading e-books. I would loose complete track of my TBR!

Thanks a lot Tallulah_Rose for your nice welcome. With this challenge I hope to get the most of the 'oldest' books from my shelf done by the end of next year. While I'm a great and regular user of my local library, and they have the books mostly only for four to five years on their shelves, and there are such a lot of interesting books waiting for me to be read, I've put only 10 books into the ROOT challenge.

I wish you Merry Christmas and happy reading:-)

Huh, can't wait to put down the first ROOT for 2013! That means, I need to finish one first though, but I am again extremele motivated! :-)

Yeah, first ROOT of 2013 done!
It was the audio version of A Caribbean Mystery which I started in 2012 already. Since it took me a rather long time to finish it and I listened to some chapters more often, because I didn't catch something due to distraction, I cannot say that I am flattered by this book. But when I think a bit more about it, I must say it was a well put mystery. It was, what is best, even a mstery for the reader/listener to try his own abilities to solve it. That is rare with Christie's novel as I experienced them. And I really i love the reader, Rosalind Ayres. She did a great job. So therefore I gave it 4 stars and enjoyed this little mystery.

Good as well: Since I hadn't had time to acquire new books, the other ones I am reading are also ROOTS. And that means I can make a little headway with my secong part of the challenge, to get more ROOTs done then new TBRs into the house.
Unfortunately I have ordered (already back in December) a bunch of books via BookMooch and they will come in sooner or later... so NEED to get more books read to keep ahead of the incoming!

Finished my 2nd book for 2012: Unseen Academicals. I've read it in the german translation and found some grae errors in the translations. Otherwise it was a really good story. It was a bit slow paced at the beginning, but took up great after the middle. Pratchett's just a great other. Unfortunately I've read all of his books I own and now will have to acquire some of his, because I'm on kind of a Pratchett-hype now.

Huh... I am starting the year off very badly.... My goal to read 20 more books off the shef than I add to them is not going well. So far I have read 3 ROOTs this year, but already added 5 and there are 7 more that I ordered in BookMooch and will arrive one day or the other. ... should get reading - the old oney as well as the new ones... and keep away from the libraryyyyyy! *warlike cry*

After two month of no ROOTs I finally managed to read a ROOT again: The Night of Wishes: or The Satanarchaeolidealcohellish Notion Potion (dt. Der satanarchäolügenialkohöllische Wunschpunsch) by Michael Ende. Although a children's book I realy enjoyed it. It was written in a nice and easy style, but not too easy and it was humourous. The author raised issues of environment, ecology and financial problems, which are still very present some 25 years after the book was first published. Nevertheless the book did not press these points so it was still entertaining and funny.
In the aftermath of this success I immediately started another ROOT that has been languishing on my shelf for over 10years. It is a small book about egypt and it's sights and history.

This last two month I was busy reading new books I acquired from beginning of the year and reading books I borrowed from colleagues. Therefore I also read my first ever Haruki Murakami: Norwegian Wood and I enjoyed it immensely.

I made a little more progress since I last posted here: In April I was able to finish two more books Still Life was an excellent crime novel just in the way of Agatha Christie, with loads on suspects, small village and various and none motive. I immensely enjoyd th setting and the characters. Definitely worth a read!
Die Therapeutin was okay. I ound it difficult that a psychologist has such a deep rooted fear and was never able or never tried to do anything against it. Furthermore she developed more fears and addictions. I just cannot believe that she is so unable to reflect on herself. Beside of that, the book was well written, the suspense was good and some of the characters were interesting enough.

In May I nly finished one book so far and it's very likely it'll stay the only one: The Logic of Failure. It is a rather old book, but still not outdated and deals with ixsues of hinking logically n difficumlt situation, planning and solving problems. I just missed the real "how you can hange things", but I also see it's difficult to give substantial advice. Just sometimes I got the feeling the author was a bit too gossipy about the probands.

I got delayed again in my quest of ROOTing out my own books: Yesterday I finished Ruby Red which was an excellent YA novel. I promised one of my cousins to read to the movie start back in march, but didn't get to it. So Now I saw it in the library took it away and finished it in 2 days. It started up really good, but annoyed me a bit with the delay of Gwen telling her mother about her abilities, but it got really really good in the end. It is also the start of a trilogy, so when I'm back home on Monday I'll go and get the whole lot of it. I suppose, it won't take too long to read through the pair of them, so I'll be back on track soon enough.
BUT since I ran out of reading material yestardy and am staying with my parents-in-law I needed to go book shopping. Gratefully my husband was able too convince me that I'd only need one book for the remaining days and I got The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. So far so good, but I'm missing the motivation of why the man's doing what he's doing.

Nevertheless, in June I already finished one ROOT: Die stolze Rebellin. It was a short novel about an african girl fleeing from home because of female circumcision. she lived in France for a while, got educated and started a career. With her boyfirnd she went back to Africa and worked for women's rights and a better life for african women. She experienced some of the negative sides of african women live herself with her new husband, but being the strong woman she was, was able to free herself from him. Nice, fast read with just the right amount of seriousness.

Also, I remembered that my husband removed one book from out home that I intended to read. Since it's off the shelves now I am going to count it towards the challenge and am ... finally finally finally ... at level between my acquisitions of new books and ROOTs this year! Oh well... no... since I bought a book yesterday that is not yet finished... damn... But I'll do my best to read twenty more books off the shelves then enter them!

Don't worry with your Root challenge. As I've seen your 50th challenge is in a great progress. You could update your Root ticker than you wouldn't have a bad feeling ;-). Happy reading :-D

thanks! My Root-ticker is up-to-date. I record both ROOTs and new acquisitions in one ticker, so as too see when I have my 20 more off the shelves than I entered onto it ;) I know, difficult, but it's easier to see this way if I reached my goal.

This last week I read through the Ruby Trilogy, unfortunately no ROOTs. I really liked the first book (Ruby Red), I cannot seem to remember what happened in the second (Sapphire Blue). I do remember, it was a fine read and a good YA-story, but somehow it didn't get in with the story. The third one (Emerald Green) was... difficult. It was easy enough to read. But it was too long in the first half and than the end was too rushed and short for my expectations. The authors had such long episodes where nothing really would happen and than she rushes through the ending. It was unsatisfactory, but I liked the story and it's characters and I would recommend it as an YA-book. Although the main character sometimes really is dumb...

ETA: I started The Far Pavillons, a ROOT that has been on my shelves for ages!

27Tallulah_Rose
sep 7, 2013, 1:41 am

Since my last post I did not finish any ROOTs. I didn't even read any new books, only library stuff and one gift, that read pretty fast. I'm still working on The Far Pavillons, I really really like it although it's such a tome, and I'm pretty sure I'll finally finish it this month, not ure about next week though. I hope I'll get a few more books done then, but first I'll have to decide whether I finish Under the Dome or give it back to the library. It's not really gripping me and it's such a tome again... well, first things first and then I'll see to that.

Never mind TR. I haven't read a ROOT the last two months, too. I also had to read a lot of other books. The most important thing is the reading whatever it is. Happy reading to you :-D

In September I managed to finish another ROOT: (The Far Pavilions). It was a great book. I needed some time to grasp what the story actually is but it was just great. It really set me into India of the late 19th century. As a dear LT-friend once said to me: It's a great coming of age story and I am happy that I finally read it, after all those years it has been sitting on my shelves. I can totally recommend it to everyone who likes to read close personal stories, who likes India during the Raj and coming of age stories. Don't let yourself be scared by the length of the book, it's totally worth your time!

Oh and I discarded one book: Mystica. I am absolutely certain I am not going to read it cover to cover, as my husband did, so no need to have it on TBR any more. Uh, and I don't recommend this to anyone. If you are interested in paranormal events or mystic locations get youself a real book just on that topic, but screw Mystica.

My totals are now at 13/20 ROOTs in total for 2013, but I did only manage to read or discard 4 more than I added to the TBR. Need to get going a bit... Christmas lies before us and I'm sure I'l get some books...

Two more done for me this month so far.
Der Laden was quite a good autobiographical book, set in schlesia between the world wars and telling from the childhood of the author. Very interestung to see how live development with all new technology on the more rural parts of the former germany. And of course it's really interesting to learn about mentality and linguistic differences in the region.

The Alchemist started of brilliantly. I really liked the view on the soul of the world and that everything is part ofnevery other thing and all things are connected. At first, I didn't like the quite profane ending with the treasure, but it somes to me, slowly but steadily, that this actually is not that bad at all. It was only very unexpected to experience something that superficial, on the surface, in such a deep book. Something worth giving a thought or two.

31Tallulah_Rose

I finished two more ROOTs this month:
Das Vampirbuch was interesting enough but for a non-fiction book it lacked a bit of structure. It could have done with a short summary at the end of each chapter so as to give an overview about the said things. The way it was composed now I sometimes had difficulty to follow the train of thought.

Inkheart was a nice short book and will definitely be interesting for children to read. It was gripping and exciting, but compared to the Harry Potter series, which I read the previous months, it was not as thrliing and breathtaking as that.
