LOL Better than 363 in this case means a lot lower!! My goal since joining LT (2008) has been to read less each year. I was successful in 2009-2011, but really blew it this year.

jan 2, 2013, 9:30 pm

Well it doesn't appear that I'm off to a good start for reading less...

1 The Initiate Brother* by Russell, fantasy (480 pp). I've only had book one of this duology for years. It does not have a clean ending -- nothing is resolved. But that hasn't stopped me from reading it, enjoying it and reading it again. I am finally ordering the sequel,

2 Fateful Lightning* by Forstchen, sf (459 pp). Part of a series, it doesn't bother me that there are books before it that I have not read. Feels like the end of the series. I'll keep it around for another read some year.

3 Sight of Proteus by Sheffield, sf (246 pp). I am not good at symbolism. I don't get it. I am not sure if that's why I just didn't get the ending or not. Interesting approach to how to deal with an overtaxed Earth and nowhere to go for more resources.

We're on an extremely tight budget now. We have a budget of $20/month for leisure spending. I'm getting 2 books out of mine from Amazon used books and am resisting all the scrapbooking supplies sales, including some designer tools I probably need. It's only the third of the month and who knows when I might want that $12? LOL

Bless you!

The Chief Minister (eq. to Governor) of the State with the National Capital in India says, an entire family's food expenses can be managed in $12! Just to put things in perspective.

PS: Not playing the guilt card, I earn and spend considerably more on food for single me, close to $150 a month. But like I mentioned, just to put things in perspective.

Thanks Paul -- Hey Richard.

I understand that Piyush. Coming from Romania where the cost of living was a lot less, we're just grappling with how to find the 600 euros required now for two new monthly bills! That $12 is about what the social security is for the Romanian elderly, but sadly for them it doesn't go as far as it seems it may in India.

4-5 Sassinak* (333pp) McCaffrey & Moon and Generation Warriors* (345 pp), SF. In the mood for more Moon, but not wanting to re-read the Paks books, I picked up a series she co-wrote. These are books 1 & 3 in a trilogy with the middle book by McCaffrey & Nye. I don't have it. I also can't guess what's in it and these two segue without a blip...

6-8 Freedom's Landing* (384pp), Freedom's Challenge* (304 pp) and Freedom's Choice* (412pp) by McCaffrey, SF. These were on the same shelf with the last books... I really didn't expect to enjoy these this time through. Instead I found all sorts of things I'd forgotten which enriched the story considerably.

9 The Silent Tower (369pp) by Hambly, fantasy. If it's a re-read, I certainly don't remember it. I have books 1 & 3 of this trilogy. I picked up the last one and know I've read it before. I also had no interest in finishing it, but I would like to know what happened in book 2! TST is a cliffhanger, the kind where you know what they're going to do but can't imagine who it will get done.

Currently reading short stories by Willa Cather. I really dislike short stories with very few exceptions.

10-14 The Corean Chronicles (6 volumes, except I don't have and did not read #5), fantasy. Written in two trilogies, the second taking place earlier than the first, I found this series even better than last time. Don't remember the a-ha moments in the 2nd trilogy that I had this time around, and I certainly didn't remember the ending. And, the third book has a very satisfying conclusion. So much so, that one wonders if the other books can add to the pleasure fo the series. -- They did for me.

Oh, you may remember this series from a few years ago when I only had books 2, 4 and 6. I really enjoyed 1 & 3. Suspect I'd like book 5 as well ;->

26suslyn
Redigerat: jan 17, 2013, 9:22 am

I gave that one up a long time ago. He really dislikes cat-talk on his thread.

15 The Lord-Protector's Daughter (304) by Modesitt, fantasy. Another in the Corean Chronicles series. I wouldn't recommend reading this without having read the 6 before. It is set in the time between the two trilogies. It felt rushed at the end.
If I were rating books, and I usually don't, the series would prob rate higher than this add-on story. But that's often the way it is.

I loved Rhapsody and that trilogy, but the books that followed in the same world were just not of the same quality. Same goes for Bishop's Witch trilogy, one of my absolute faborite works. But the add on books are barely worth reading.

16 Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon (302) by Millett, mystery. Thoroughly enjoyed Millet's "Watson." He's captured Doyle's style beautifully.

17 Congo* (313) by Crichton, thriller. I remember I loved this when I first read it. Too bad it's so dated now (he spends a lot of time talking about how computers work -- published in 1980). Still a good story. But not one I feel a need to keep around for yet another re-read --> recycled.

Reading Pilcher now. Wanted something a little more real :)

Might have to dust off my ereader as I'm in the mood for George Eliot or giving Anthony Trollop another try. And just remembered that there's another book by Bunyan I'd like to try, and the same goes for Defoe (I so loved his Robinson Crusoe!).

33suslyn
Redigerat: jan 21, 2013, 4:13 pm

18 September* (471) by Pilcher. I didn't realize before, or at least that I remember, that September is related to Shell Seekers. Probably helps that the latter is the last Pilcher I read. So September isn't what I'd call a sequel, but one of the more minor characters in SS turns up here. And it works. It wouldn't work, IMO, if one were looking for a sequel to SS. Good stuff.

34suslyn
Redigerat: jan 27, 2013, 2:36 am

Since September wasn't the book I'd wanted to read, I continued on with Pilcher.

19 Winter Solstice (504pp) by Pilcher, fiction. Probably my fav although Shell Seekers is pretty marvelous too.
20 The Empty House (249pp) by Pilcher, fiction. Probably my least fav, but a nice read if with an unrealistic too tidy ending.

Since I've now read all the Pilchers on my shelf, I think the book I had in mind must be Joanna Trollope. But there are no Trollopes on my shelf. And that little fact reminded me that Steph found another 6 boxes or so of books which have yet to be unpacked.

So rather than read the books mentioned in #32, I'm concentrating on unread books on my shelves to see what can leave. Found one and got rid of a few others I didn't bother to read past the first few pages.

21 Finding Ian (384pp) by Cameron, romance. It didn't read like a romance until about halfway through. And it's too bad that changed. Good premise. Needed a better editor -- could have been a brilliant book. --> recycled.

35suslyn
Redigerat: jan 27, 2013, 2:36 am

22. In the Presence of Enemies* (407pp) by Coughlin, fiction. A legall drama I didn't realize this was a reread until the last chapter. I understood why it's still on my shelves. And that's where it willl remain. :)

36suslyn
Redigerat: aug 6, 2013, 2:25 pm

23 Lords of the White Castle (678pp) Chadwick, historical fiction. It wasn't until the latter part of the book (final 1/4?) that I was sure I'd read this before. What a great story. Follows the life of a marcher lord from his teens until late in life, through the reigns of Henry II, Richard, John and Henry III and the foundation of the Magna Carta. It's nice to put that wonderful document into historical context, even if it is fictionalized. Nice afterword in which she tells what's true, what's probably true and what's her own additions. And she gives a nice list of works should one care to learn more. Nicely done.

I think I should probably check the book against my tags (in which I have the year read, mostly -- ha!, since 2009). That way I can accomplish the goal which is to make sure what I have on my shelves is stuff I want to keep there. I really need room for those other boxes which are all over the dining room. So nice we can finally see the dining room now that the kitchen cabinets are mostly out of there and in the kitchen where they belong :)

#32 I have a copy of Congo lying on my shelf for a a little over a year now; will try to squeeze it in, in my Feb / March readings. I have Moll Flanders on my shelf for quite some time too now, but I wonder if its chance will come at all this year, there are so many other classics who kind of have priority over this one!

Read 232 pages of Archer's The Prodigal Daughter. For me, his style in this book felt like he was always setting the story. I read through the end of Part 1. Maybe it changes for Part 2, but frankly I'm just not interested. There was nice enough closure here for me to stop without regrets. --> recycled.

40suslyn
Redigerat: aug 6, 2013, 1:18 pm

24 Five Stories (174pp) by Cather, fiction. Well I now know I'd probably enjoy a Cather novel, assuming that she has a real ending. In most of these (4?) it felt like she thought, "Oh! This is a short story! Better wrap it up with some cryptic comment that will keep them wondering." Do tell me if her novels end the same way. If so, I'll give them a pass! --> recycled. I did not read the afterword (nor include it in the pages for the book) in which the book she wanted to write is discussed.

25 Knights of Dark Renown* (310pp) by Gemmellm fantasy. Couldn't stand any more cruising the shelves to see what I should get rid of, so... back to fantasy. :) I assume this is a reread but have no recollection of it. I can say that this is not my fav Gemmell. In its favor is that it's a nice story -- good pacing, interesting twists. Sometimes felt it could have used some editing. But, and this was the good point, it's a stand-alone. Most of the books of his that I have are parts of series where I don't have the rest in the series. It was nice not to be missing parts.

26 Home-world (199pp) by Harrison, SF. Pretty good story, although at the end of the first chapter I thought it would be anything but. The first in a trilogy, it has a satisfying ending and can stand alone. I'm glad as I don't have the others. I think I'd enjoy them, but the budget is reserved for "must haves" which the sequels to this volume are not. --> recycled mainly because I think Liliana would really enjoy this, and a re-read isn't mandatory for me.

Hey 24 out of 29 days. At this rate, I'll read less than last year :) That would be nice.

28-29 The Highlander* (296) and Highland Heaven* (299) by Langan, hist fic (circa 1200). Nice enough, but they no longer meet my "short of shelf space" standards. In Romania we had a ton of room. And if the forseen move comes through next year, we'll have even less than now, so ... --> recycled. Touchstone not working for the first book.

If you like action books about rogues, you might enjoy Wilbur Smith's The Eye of the Tiger. If you're into deep sea fishing, diving or boating you might too. I'm not really into any of those so at 134 of 430 pp I'm giving this one up. Did have some good laughs and often appreciated a skillful turn of phase. --> recycled.

30 Mallory's Oracle* (329 pp) by O'Connell, policier. I prefer the French term to crime fic... One blurber writes, "A truly amazing first novel." It certainly doesn't read like one. I'm interested in seeing how the other books stand up to the high standard she's set in this book. I'm happy to see that there are many more titles :)

31 Do Not Go Gently (285 pp) by Smith-Levin, policier. Another first of a series. This one might have gone down better if I hadn't just finished Mallory's Orcale. Still it was interesting, especially in light of the author's bio (first woman on the Worcester MA police force). --> recycled.

You're safe Piyush. Roni, hope you like it.

32 The Fire Inside (408pp) by Martin, regency. It's not billed as regency. The cover made me think 1930s. But the date at the beginning of the text says 1806... Too explicit for my tastes, but they were married so I can live with it. :) Marital relations? Novel approach.

33 The Last True Cowboy* (372) by Eagle, romance. Enjoyed it. Again.

34 Shatter (381) by Harper, thriller. Pretty good whodunit. You knew who, but even so the twists kept making you second-guess yourself. No re-read required --> recycled.

35 Final Jeopardy (312) by Fairstein, policier. I want more and am glad there is more by her to read.

36 Killshot (321) by Leonard, policier with a twist. This one is basically about the criminals and their would-be victims. It seemed quite original to me. The interactions between the husband and wife cracked me up. So easy to relate to! Pretty good story. (but with my shelf space as it is --> recycled)

37 Dawnthief* (527) by Barclay, fantasy.
38 Jackdaws (496) by Follett, fiction (WWII). I appreciate the research he does (and shares). Good and --> recycled.
39 Luna Marine (482) by Douglas, SF (space opera). Book 2 of a trilogy. Well written, well paced. --> recycled.
40 The Tristan Betrayal* (504) by Ludlum, fiction (WWII). Well done. Think this was a re-read. Love the ending. --> recycled.
41 Blindsight* (339) by Cook, thriller. It was good the second time around. --> recycled.

It occurs to me that I could advertise my books as coming from a smoke-free environment (I smoke but not in the house). But the edges of my books are often covered with cat hair. That would be just as much of a problem for a lot of folks. Doesnt' smell bad, but it sure can make you sneeze!

42 Don't Cry Now* (385) by Fielding, thriller. Well done. Disturbing ending. --> recycled.

I kept losing Dawnthief. I read two parts of Borders of Infinty during times it was missing. These short stories I can handle.

43 Borders of Infinity* (222) by Bujold, sf.

I am pleased to see that out of 51 days I've read 41 books! This is a trend I can live with.

44 & 45 Shadowheart & Demonstorm by Barclay
genre
regency (shock!) ;->
where I got it purchased these in Romania after reading Dawnthief
why I read it Last time I tried to read these, it had been too long since I read Dawnthief for them to make any sense. I was hoping reading them directly after (and I did despite the order found in Msg 50, as Dawnthief was actually the 41st book of the year)
what I thought It worked. These are a continuation of the Legends of the Raven begun with Dawnthief. I wholeheartedly recommend not skipping books 2-4! LOL This is a set of two trilogies. Good story. Readable and funny.

I have one peeve with the series and it may be a problem with the reader rather than the author. Kept missing impt bits of info and finding it had happened by what was written. I think some of this was his choice, but most likely plenty was because I read too fast and missed stuff. That happens a lot when a book is exciting and I'm gripped by it -- must see what happens next. Really should moderate that. I'm working on it. :)

46 Harlequin (485) by Cornwell, hist fic. One in a series (The Grail Quest) this book stands quite well alone and is set mostly in modern day France at the beginning of the 100 years war. I don't feel like hunting down the rest in the series --> recycled. Touchstone isn't working: ISBN 007180640

47 Christy (501) by Marshall, fiction. Set in Appalachia in the early 20th century. Absolutely excellent. I would have read it sooner if it hadn't had a pic from movie version on the cover. It functioned somewhat like a missionary biography for me, bolstering my faith, serving as a check, and raising my expectations.

Earlier I mentioned genre I prefer. Well I've got a correction, but I don't know what it would be called. Pilcher, J Trollope, Perry's WWI series and now Marshall would all fit there. I might like this more than any other after fantasy.

Just finished:

48 The Seeking Sword (346) by Kangilaski, SF (I guess). Reminded me at times of Gaiman and later on L'Engle. I don't really care for either author, so I'm a bit surprised I kept reading. About halfway through I was hooked enough to finish without thoughts of putting it down. I really have no clue how to describe this book without spoilers, sorry about that. --> recycled.

And read before the books listed in msg 56:

49 The Vineyard* (364) by Delinsky, fiction. Most of the books I've read by her go in the same category for me with Pilcher etc. I enjoyed this one this time around too.

50 Coming Home (785) by Pilcher, fiction. This one is huge -- the physical book. It's paperback, but in hardback size... weighs a ton. Not easy to handle. The good news is that I hadn't read it (or if so, have no recollection of doing so). I really enjoyed this one set around WWII. Good read.

51 The Shepherd's Castle* by MacDonald, fiction (281). I'd really like to read these in another form (like the original?). These are retold and condensed. I am longing to know what Michael Phillips left out!

52 D'Shai* by Rosenberg, fantasy (327). I just love this standalone. Dry humor, great twists, it's a gem.

53 Yearwood by Hazel (261), fantasy. Reminded often of McKilip. First in a trilogy. I don't have the other two --> recycled.

Sooty was hit by a car, it seems, and is on a month's bed rest. You try to get a cat to take it easy for a month!

Then a few days later it was clear Papanas isn't well. We took her to the vet -- she apparently was on the brink of death, literally. A week later she was much improved but she has FIP, that fatal virus which took Greenwich from us last summer. We gave her another week to see if she'd hold her own or we should put her down. That appt is next Wednesday.

She is improving in matters of energy, appearance and appetite. But her breathing is labored. The virus is creating fluids in her body cavity which are making it hard for her to breathe. Asking for a miracle. We really love her.

55 The Hallowed Hunt* (423) by Bujold, fantasy. I kept thinking, "This is my favorite in the series." And then I'd remember The Curse of Chalion and wonder if it were true. And then, The Paladin of Souls ... Well let me say this, I really really like this book! I don't think it's as successful a standalone as most of her books though.

56 The Eye of the World* (782) by Jordan, fantasy. Well I've been selfishly very annoyed at Jordan. And it didn't stop when he died, but rather increased! And still, not too far into the story I was hooked all over again as if I'd never read this before.

57 The Great Hunt* (679) by Jordan, fantasy
58 The Dragon Reborn* (675) by Jordan, fantasy
59 The Shadow Rising* (981) by Jordan, fantasy

(can you guess what I'm reading next? LOL)

Hi Susan! I see that you're going down the Wheel of Time rabbit hole again :) Those books are fantastic.

D'shai looks interesting, I'll have to check it out. Piyush, some other middle eastern inspired fantasy books are Throne of the Crescent Moon and The Desert of Souls – both are great.

#67 The Curse of Chalion was my favourite amongst the lot, followed by the The Hallowed Hunt; Paladin of Souls was good too, but I liked the other 2 better.

Have you finished the WoT series, including all the Sanderson ones?

60 The Fires of Heaven* by Jordan, fantasy (992) and 59 Lord of Chaos* by Jordan, fantasy (986). My primary complaint about this series is the basic immaturity of all of characters. With very few exceptions (I can think of only one), they act like children, or at least are motivated in ways that seem childish to me. I hope this doesn't say anything about the relationships Jordan had.

Like you, my favorite of Bujold's Chalion books is either the one I've just finished, or the one I'm just starting!

I never got past the first book in the Jordan series.

Well, most of the characters in the Wheel of Time are very young; the whole 14 book series takes place over two years.

76dk_phoenix
apr 6, 2013, 9:07 am

I agree, I think it shows, too. El Husbando calls the parts with the girls the "Little Aes Sedai Detective Club" because of how much they act like immature little schoolgirls. Hah!

That said, we both still enjoy the series a lot.

apr 6, 2013, 4:55 pm

Roni, the first book is really one of the weaker in the series IMO.

LOL I do too Faith. And it's not just the younger folks. The kings and queens all act out of spite, one-upmanship, revenge... I'm just glad the folks I hang around with tend to be a bit nicer :)

Is it just two years Kriti? I was just wishing I knew for sure :) Thx!

Redigerat: apr 7, 2013, 3:29 pm

Roni, the first book is definitely weak, I also gave up on the series for a while after I read it.

Susan, it's definitely just two years, it's a bit ridiculous for 14 books, I know. The events of the first 6-7 books take place over a longer period of time when everyone's still traveling by road, and then people discover how to Travel using magic and a lot happens over very little time (and of course in books 8-10, very little happens over very little time :P)

Faith, I love the "Little Aes Sedai Detective Club"; hilarious!

I read the first book of that series while sitting on planes, trains and automobiles on my honeymoon 21 years ago. My how time flies (no pun intended). I've never gotten around to finishing the series. I stopped when Jordan had difficulty around Book #6 or so, realizing that I would have to re-read the entire thing before tackling the last books and wanting to wait until he was done. One of these days I'll get around to it.

I'm really enjoying it this time around Tad. Turns out I was missing a book within the series (Winter's Heart. It's en route along with the rest except the last book. I'm waiting for it until I can get a used copy! LOL

Papanas' treatment is so expensive. She's still here which is great. But the virus seems to be still active, and that's not so great.

61 A Crown of Swords (856) by Jordan, fantasy.
62 The Path of Daggers (672) by Jordan, fantasy.
Missing Winter's Heart. Started reading another book, but couldn't stay away. Glad WH only covers 22 days, but I'd really like to know what happened in them more specifically. The following books give one ideas of what's occurred, but...
63 Crossroads of Twilight (823) by Jordan, fantasy.
64 The Knife of Dreams (837) by Jordan, fantasy.

Sure hope that mail order arrives soon!!

Well the WOT books arrived today -- that's thrilling. What's not great is that I didn't read the fine print -- three are hardbacks! Piyush, that's one of my space-saving no-nos! pooh.

While I was waiting for them to get here, I plowed through the books my book-swapping friend Andrea left with me at Easter.

65 The Help (451) by Stockett, hist fiction. Loved this novel on the lives of ladies in Jackson, MS in the early 60s. Wonderful and well-done, I think. Not having been a southern-raised black woman, I can't say what kind of errors there are (if any). But from my time in the South (13 years) and my friendships within those communities it seems authentic to me. This was my fav of the 5 books, but all were good.

66 Olive Kitteridge (270) by Strout, fiction. I may have liked this more if it wasn't a series of connected short stories. This was my least favorite. If I'm reading the cover correctly, it won a pulitzer. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

67 Ice Road (544) by Slovo, hist fiction. Set in Stalin's Russia during the 30s through the beginning of the WWII, this is a pretty good read. Depressing somewhat, but it was a hard time. Says it was shortlisted for hte Orange Prize. The winner must have been spectacular. This was really pretty good.

68 Caleb's Crossing (418) by Brooks, hist fic. I wish this had just been fiction LOL. And it was, but she was also trying to stay close to some historical facts re: the early Harvard Days (1600s) and the Indians who live on the island now known as Martha's Vineyard. I'd like to see where she would have taken these characters without those constraints. Still it was excellent. But, I'm a Brooks fan...

69 The 19th Wife (606) by Ebershoff, fiction. An alternate title could be "A brief look at polygamy in the US". No doubt his title sells better! LOL Ebershoff does a really good job melding historical accounts, biographies and a modern-day murder mystery into a cohesive whole. I appreciated his afterward where he shares about his source docs. I'd be hard-pressed to chooes my fav among these last three books. Completely different, each is a compelling read.

Now I'm backtracking to pick up Winter's Heart. I really thought I'd read it, but so far (not very far in at all), I have no recollection of the material.

70 winter's heart (656) by Jordan, 71 The Gathering Storm (766) and 72 Towers of Midnight ((843) by Jordan & Sanderson. I remembered parts of one of the latter two. I hadn't read the previous books in quite a while and suspect it seemed to lack cohesion. This time around I really like it (which ever it was). Have to wait for the last book to come out in paperback or find a library book being released etc.

73 Wind in the Stone* (338) Norton.
74 Imager* (499) by Modesitt.

Susan - Just catching up and wishing you a wonderful Sunday.

TY Paul! :)

75 Imager's Challenge* (538) and 76 Imager's Intrigue* (657) by Modesitt, fantasy. Same reaction as last year: loved it and wish that the next three books in the series went forward in time rather than back. Some day I'll get them and, no doubt, love them too.

Piyush, I tried for some regencies (just for you), but missed the mark the first few tries:
77 The Convenient Marriage* (403) by Heyer, Hist fic (pre-French revolution). Fun as always.

78 Surrender Sweet Stranger* (333) by Pace, hist fic (1863-5) set in AZ and Mexico.

79 The Gambler's Heart* (347) by Wilson, set at the end of the Regency period, so I guess it counts :) A study on the harm in assumptions and refusing to believe what other folks say when it goes against your assumptions.

On loan from our new friends here in town:
80 True Believer* (434) and 81 The Lucky One* (384) by Sparks. Enjoyed reading these. As portrayed in his books, this brand of Christianity typifies the too often well-deserved branding of those professing as hypocrites. *sigh* btw, the True Believer is not about a Christian but about psychic phenomena. I preferred that book to the other.

82 Ring of Lightning* (572) by Fancher, fantasy. I really like this book. It's the first in a series and has a good enough ending that while I'd be more than happy to read on, I'm satisfied enough not to hunt the others down.

83 Not Really the Prisoner of Zenda (383) by Rosenberg, fantasy. While not on the same level as D'Shai, it was enjoyable. I'd like to have the full series one day. The ending surprised me.

84 Walking on Water* (527) by O'Connor, suspense. This is actually the last book I read. This list isn't in order. The Sparks books, I think, came right after the Modesitts... Hope it's not important to anyone! I enjoyed this book less than on my last read through. It may end up on the Lili pile.

85 Against the Odds* (396) by Moon, SF. The end of the series I read earlier (this year? Last?). Found it in a drawer of hardbacks.

86 A Breath of Fresh Air* (275) by James, contemporary romance. It was a breath of fresh air. Light and just what was needed for the moment.

Tried to find a Pournelle to read off my shelves. Found that I had three collections of short stoires (horror!). These have been removed from my inventory and placed in the ever-growing Liliana pile.

Hope you all are doing well. I continue to regret that I'm not visiting more threads. I continue to have less time and am only falling farther behind.

Our news in brief: Papanas is still here despite the vet's surprise that she was alive in April... Sooty has just been diagnosed with severe kidney trouble. House renovations continue.... s l o w l y. Steph has oral surgery tomorrow. Our nonprofit, One Step Away International, has celebrated its one year anniversary. My sis' kids all have graduation ceremonies in the next two months, high school, tech school and university. We will not be able to attend. Mom had knee replacement surgery and has had a difficult recovery. Shoulder surgery is next up for her.

P -- still waiting on the last volume. Hope I get to it soon enough that I don't have to re-read the earlier ones!! LOL

Got great news today. A scrap e-zine wants to do an article on One Step Away :) I'm psyched. Of course she asked for info that I have no idea how to answer, but...

Sooty's disease appears to be congenital. No clue if we're looking at weeks or years til it takes him. Papanas waddles around seemingly content with her distended belly... we feel for her even if she does not appear to be in pain.

Books, not in order read, or in reverse order read, just in order pulled off my desk and/or out from under a cat. Currently have BeauJ sleeping between my arms while I type, Mitze just to the left of us using a David Drake book as a pillow and Sooty beyond that ....

I really don't see how I can input these atm. So I'll do it later.

Blessings!

Okay, so one's moved... the one on my arms...

87 Goddess of the Ice Realm (496) by Drake, fantasy. I have three widely separated books in the larger series. Liked them all especially as the main characters remain the same. Actually thought of TV episodes or a miniseries :)

88 The Octagonal Raven* (398) by Modesitt, SF. Enjoyed it as usual. Remembering that makes me think another Modesitt SF will probably be my next pick off the shelves

89 The Legend of Nightfall* (493) by Reichert, fantasy. It had been long enough since I'd read this that I really had no recollection of the work. Reichert is easy to love.

90 Some Old Lover's Ghost* (571), Lennox. This is a re-read. It's also not mine. Must have read it the first time about 10 years ago. Thanks Andrea :)

91 Queen of Demons (662) by Drake, Fantasy. part of the miniseries.

92 Anybody out there (593) by Keyes, fiction. Got this from Andrea. She hasn't read it yet. I'd be surprised if she finishes it. Kind of the same kind of genre as the Shopaholic books but not as slapstick.

93 The Gods Return (463) by Drake. This is the season and series finale.

94 The Sword and the Chain* (251) by Rosenberg, fantasy. Turns out I read these in reverse order! LOL

95 Exiles to Glory* (216) by Pournelle, SF. Well I'm all but certain that the book I've been wanting to read is one of Dickson's Dorsai books. At one point for some unknown to me reason I decided I didn't want to read them again and got rid of them. I'd very much like to read them again. Those statements are not to suggest something is lacking with Exiles. I actually enjoyed this a lot. I was looking for another of his Military battle books, but ran out.

96 The Mercenary* (269) by Pournelle. This is one of the Falkenberg legion books I wanted more of.

97 Prince of Mercenaries* (338) by Pournell. This one's a lot of fun.

98 The Heir Apparent* (319) by Rosenberg

99 Gust Front (712) by Ringo, SF. Fun, for me anyway.

100 Painted Lives* (311) by Allen. Interesting how different books work at different times in our lives. This one was one of my top reads a few years ago. This year it was okay. Fine, but nothing to rave about... Still a keeper though :)

101 A Maze of Stars (326) by Brunner, SF. I was confused at the last paragraph. I hate that. --> recycled.

102 Beggar's Banquet* (293) by Hood, fantasy. The blurb reads, "Have dragon. Will investigate." Fun little mystery lightly set in a fantasy setting. It functions as a standalone but is actually the third in a series. I have a feeling the other 2 were more solidly "fantasy" in feel per the allusions to earlier events.

103 Gravity Dreams* (502) by Modesitt, SF. I prefer his later works. Really disliked the ending.

104 The Parafaith War* (471) by Modesitt, SF.

105 Dagger* (250) by Drake, fantasy. Interesting 5th book in the multi-author Thieve's World series.

106 Her Dearest Sin (298) by Wilson, regency.

Papanas died at the end of May. We still miss her. I expect that will continue. But other things are looking up. :)

Finally got all my SF in order and then found another box and a half. Good news (?) is that some are duplicates so they don't have to find a home. That (buying dups) is what got me to join LT in the first place. Hate that waste!!

I'll be back to fill in my June titles in a few (in case you happen to visit while I'm away from the keyboard.

107 Battleaxe* (659), 108 Enchanter* (667) and 109 Starman* (647) by Douglass. Currently re-reading this fantasy epic.
110 The Spellsong War* (657), 111 Darksong Rising , and 112 Shadowsinger* (612). Books 2, 3 & 5 of the Spellsong cycle (fantasy). I really wish I had book 4. A lot happens in it, and I would like more specifics than I could glean from book 5.
113 The Curse of Sagamore* (232) by Dalkey, fantasy. Nice, self-contained story with some surprising twists.
114 The War God's Own* (374) by David Weber. Book two in a fantasy series. I really like the world.
115 Forge of the Titans by White, SF. If this was a re-read, I'd be surprised. The story line is imaginative enough that it seems I'd have to remember something. Quite enjoyed it.

More later.

And older reads:

116 The Grail and the Ring* (316) by Edgerton, fantasy. This is a book which comes after the series. If I don't have any of the others, it will be discarded.

117 The Sword and the Lion* (632) by Cray, fantasy. It's been so long that I don't remember anything about it!

118 Mistress of the Catacombs* (610) by Drake, fantasy. This is one of the books which was missing in the series I read last month. Nice to have found it.

119 Prelude to Foundation* (493), 120 Foundation* (296), 121 Foundation and Empire* (282), 122 Second Foundation* (279), and 123 Foundation's Edge* (450) by Asimov, SF. The first and last in this set are my favorites.

124 On Basilisk Station* (422)

128 Honor Among Enemies* (538)
129 In Enemy Hands* (530)
130 Echoes of Honor* (740)
131 War of Honor* (968)
132 At All Costs* (892)

I found the 'missing' two in one of my recently unearthed boxes, but I'll wait to reread those until next pass. Some skimming of the political stuff in the last few books.

Sort of in reverse order, meaning last read is first:

139 Bright and Shining Tiger* (218) by Edwards, fantasy. This book reminds me a bit of Norton. Wish she'd written more.

Two regencies: 140 The Perfect Rake* (360) by Gracie and 141 A Grand Deception* (330) by Mansfield. I'd really like to get my hands on some more Mansfield.

Those were read as a bit of respite from Cherryh's fab SF Foreigner series: 142-147 Pretender (404), Destroyer (406), Inheritor* (460), Precursor* (448), Invader* (456) and Foreigner* (423).

148 Serpent (470) by Cussler, thriller. I'll keep it for a reread.

149 By Love Possessed (544) by Cozzens, fiction. Absolutely detested the ending. Interesting walk through a weekend. --> recycled

151 The Brooklyn Follies (273) by Auster, fiction. My first but hopefully not last Auster. Loved it.

152 A Crowded Marriage (598) by Alliott, fiction. A decent read except for the completely unbelievable ending (a sop to the romance readers?).

153 Emerald House Rising (325) by Kerr, fantasy. Really quite good.

154 Shirley (482) by Bronte, fiction. I appreciated this a ton and perhaps like it more than Jane Eyre. At the same time I can see why the other is more widely read as it probably has a greater appeal.

In approximate reverse order read

155 The Law of Becoming (743) by Elliott, fantasy/sf. I adore Jaran, the first in the series. But this final book of 4 is pretty good too.

156 Flash (530) by Modesitt, SF.

157 Honor's Bride (298) by Wilson, Hist Fiction (Scotland after Culloden).

158 Eldrie the Healer (237) by Edwards, fantasy. I continue to wish she'd finished this series.

159 The Last Pope (313) by Osborn, fiction. My first Pope, but not, I hope, my last.

160 Imperial Earth (305) by Clarke, SF. Disappointing after my last read by him. Also didn't like that I was confused at the end (which happens a lot with me). --> recycled.

161 The Heart Queen (423) by Potter, regency. Good read.

162 The Sword (393), 163 The Ring (426), and 164 The Chalice by Chester, fantasy. Decent trilogy.

Some more of my backlog:

165 1632* (597), 166 1634 (702) and 167 1635* (799) by Flint et al, alt hist. I hadn't read 1634 before. It's a collection of short stories and worked pretty well.

168 The Tyrant* (501) by Flint, SF.

169 Circus (191) by MacLean, fiction. Loved this. If you like spy stories or mysteries (this isn't one, but has a lot of the same elements which make a good mystery), this might be worth your while.

170 Pride and Prejudice* (326) by Austen. :)

171 Reconciliations* (364) by Klein, fiction. I didn't realize I'd read this before til over halfway through! It's a good look at the web of family. Hmmm... my second in a year on Jewish life during the Nixon years. Twice, I've decided, is enough. I need more shelf space --> recycled.

173 1633* (598) by Flint & Weber, alt hist. I need to get the paperback for this one. The version I have is HUGE!

174 Executive Orders* (874) by Clancy, fiction. I think this one would play really well right now with the general feelings about govt. Even thought about writing Harper Collins and suggesting a re-release with a small intro to put folks 'in the know' for the series without having to slog through it all. Maybe a character list would do it... Anyway, this book is also huge although paperback and is now leaving my shelves. Interestingly, for me anyway, I didn't like this one first time I read it.

175 The Deed of Paksenarrion (1024) by Moon, fantasy. Still hate the ending, but love the trilogy.

176 Wildcard (376) by Lee, thriller. I'd like to read more of the series to see if it lives up to its promise.

177 Solomon and the Queen of Sheba by Ormonde, hist fic. Highly recommended for those with an interest in this period. My (almost) masters in Old Testament no doubt increased my enjoyment of this book. I think it is really well done.

178 Pitcairn Island (338) by Nordoff & Hall, hist fic. This volume is the last in their trilogy in the mutiny on the H.M.S. Bounty. Provocative and well done.

179 Angelmass (430) by Zahn, SF. Not my fav work by him, but it is a story well told.

Susan, the numbers of the books were wrong so I think it is 178-179 so far (unless I do not find another one with wrong number :P)

And I am looking forward to some of those recycled books, already have my eye on some ;)

181 Cold Fire* (506) by Koontz, thriller. Great ending.
182 Narabedla Ltd. (313) by Pohl, SF. --> recycled. Once was enough.
183 Persuasion* (306) by Austen, fiction. This volume includes a memoir which I didn't finish.
184 Chromosome 6 (456) by Cook, thriller. This was a sort of sequel to another book of his (the one about eye transplants). Don't need to read it again --> recycled.
185 Old Devotions by Perrin, fiction. Richard called the main character a pill. That works. --> recycled.

#112 & #113 I had somehow stumbled into, and read 1632 as well, I remember it being quite a decent read - if it is the same book I am thinking of, a part of town in US magically gets teleported to the year 1632...

#114 The Deed of Paksenarrion is one of my unfinished trilogies, despite having read and liked Book 1 of the series, from what I remember, was your recommendation - I believe at that time, I couldn't locate a copy of the sequels.

Piyush, I have the omnibus version for the Paks series. I couldn't find the sequels either! And, yes, you were right on 1632 :)

Hey TLyly I've been reading quite a bit -- shock! ;->

Still trying to get rid of books I don't need in my library. By Follett:
188 A Dangerous Fortune* (596), hist fic (1870-1890). Too titillating for my taste, but a good read. --> recycled.
189 Night Over Water (524), fic (1941). Same as above.
190 Code to Zero* (468), fiction (1940-1957). Really good. Keeping it for another go around in a few years.
191 The Man from St Petersburg (342), fic (outbreak of WWI). Didn't enjoy this one as much. --> recycled.

There were others that I didn't finish but just recycled. I am really impressed by the breadth of his writing: medieval, World Wars, thought he was an American from the way he wrote Code to Zero.

192 Chanur's Homecoming (398) by Cherryh, SF. I've read others in the Alliance universe which I didn't care for. This was my first of the Chanur books (#4 out of 5). I wouldn't mind having them all.

193 Wizard Spawn* (275) by Cherryh & Asire, fantasy. I'd like to get the rest of this series.

#116 Koontz is another author I would like to read more from, till now I have read the first two books of Odd Thomas series, one each, over the last two Halloweens, third one will be on the list for this year!

Persuasion isn't an Austen I cared much about.

#120 And now I remember more, 1632 was one of the free books at Baen Books!

By the way, there seems to be something wrong with your numbering of books in this last post.

Thx Piyush. Funny, I think Persuasion might be my fav LOL

194 Critical Judgment* (450) by Palmer, thriller. Meh ... but I liked what he did with the epilogue. --> recycled.

195 Vanishing Act* (351) by Perry, fiction. I really liked this -- again. Hope to read more in the series.

196 Timeline (491) by Crichton, thriller. Didn't put it down. Should have, but didn't. Good stuff. Rec for lovers of French/English medieval history and fans of the genre.

197 Miracle Cure (431) by Palmer, thriller. I don't recommend reading these in close succession. In this instance there were two similarities in his plot devices that I might not have noticed with more space. This was, imo, the weaker of the two. --> recycled

198 Kaz the Minotaur (314) by Knaak, fantasy. Part of the DragonLance saga. Nice light read.

199 Manner of Death* (403) by White, thriller. Good read.

200 The Eleventh Commandment* by Archer, thriller. Good twists.

201 Invasion of Privacy* (517) by O'Shaughnessy, thriller. This one is good but fairly gruesome. Twice was enough for this one. I'd be interested in reading another in the series by this sister writer duo. --> recycled.

202 Cold Case* (419) by White, thriller. a sequel to book # 199. I like them.

203 Fugitive Nights (349) by Wambaugh, fiction. Not as sleazy as the other books of his I had in my library, and often pretty darn funny.

204 The Pritcher Mass* (158) by Dickson, classic SF.

McCaffrey's Pern: 205 Nerilka's Story* (182). Quite nice little volume. This one's in hard back.
206 Dragonsong* (176). This book was given to me when I was in HS. Still trying to figure out why this lady would have given me a book. Glad she did!
207 Dragonsinger* (240). And 208 Dragondrums* (193) to finish out the trilogy.

209 Entering Tenebrea (358) by Dawson & Graham. I'd really like the rest of the series.

210 The Dragon and the George* (244) by Dickson, fantasy. Nice little volume and fantasy and self-discovery.

211 The Final Battle (388) by Dietz, SF. I don't think his main alien group is alien enough. Quite well done. Disturbing sexual references/scenes. Surprised really at how disturbed I was. --> recycled.

I have to agree that the sequels just don't cut it, Roni! We're moving sometime in the next year or so (husband's office is moving farther away). I've been reading unreads like crazy trying to cull ones I won't want to keep. Still, as you've seen, I have to take a break from that some times!!

Now I need to post my latest reading, which is sitting right here waiting for me....

212 The Eternity Stone (335) by Romine, SF. Reminiscent of Norton, but not YA. Good read. Working desperately to cull my books. So --> recycled. Lili, I think you'll be glad to have this one.

213 A Woman to be Loved* (633) BY Mitchell, fiction (post WWI). Finished it to find my sign for "not wanted" LOL. If you like the era and/or British history, toil of the poor stories this *might* be for you. --> recycled.

214 The Conqueror (327) by Heyer, fictionalized acct of William the Conqueror. Enjoyed reading all about Rouen and Normandy in that era.

215 Against the Tide of Years (454) and 216 Island in the Sea of Time (608) by Stirling, Alt Hist (pre-history). Interesting. Makes you want the sequels. --> recycled.

217 Wish You Well* (398) by Baldacci, fiction (US WV 1940s). Good stuff.
218 Beach Music* (800) by Conroy. Well-told story of a family full of tortured relationships in SC (1970s) with well-used flashbacks to Ukraine and Poland WWI and before. -->recycled.

219 A Family Affair* (373) by Haran, fiction (England 80s?). lots and lots of adultery with a decent story woven around it. --> recycled.

220 Bluesong* (261) by Van Scyoc, fantasy. Makes me want to read more.

221 The Dragonbone Chair* (766), 222 The Stone of Farewell* (727), 223 Seige* (796), 224 StormTo Green Angel Tower, Part 2* (796) by Williams, fantasy. I love it all except the Epilogue, which was fine, but tried to do too much imo.

225 Fatal* (509) by Palmer, thriller. Good read.

226 The Law of War* (309) by Shatner, SF. Good stuff. I was hoping this time around I'd find it recyclable, mais non. Incredible similarities imo to some of Babylon V's Mars episodes. Wondering which came first and if they influenced each other. Also wondered, sad to say, if Shatner had a ghost writer...

I'm not sure how I feel about Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. I enjoyed the books, but reading newer fantasy has spoiled me - I kept having questions about why Simon should be king just because of his bloodline, he seemed kind of useless. I can't believe all the characters just handed him the throne, either.

LOL. I didn't intend to read the whole series (again), but ... I did. I don't have much access to new books, so am stuck with re-reading what I have. I was actually surprised to enjoy it as much as I did. The story sucked me in this time, and I found myself appreciating things which didn't mean much the last time. I also enjoyed anticipating what I knew was coming. Glad I didn't loathe it!

Also a fan of the Tad Williams series, and I love the Van Scyoc series--I have 7 of his books, and it has to have been over 25 years since I've read any of them. Good to know that one, at least, holds up!

227 The Caine Mutiny (639) by Wouk, fiction (WWII). Not hard to see why it won a Pulitzer. Glad I read it. --> recycled.

228 The Testament* (533) by Grisham, fiction. I told Piyush I really liked this one. Thought I re-read to see if it was still true. It is. The blurber says it was his most introspective novel to that point. Maybe that's why I like it. No crime bosses or death threats (although there is death). Good stuff.

229 The Silver Stone* (346) by Rosenberg (fantasy). Tirna Og and North Dakota. I was hoping for another candidate for recycling, but I enjoyed the reread and think I'd enjoy it again. So, it stays. With my budget as it is, I won't be getting the other books in the series although if I stumble upon them some day in a used bookstore, I won't hesitate to get more.

230 The White Mists of Power* (302) by Rusch, fantasy. Another non-candidate for the recylcing pile.

231 A Time of Omens* (599) by Kerr, fantasy (celtic). Part of a series which really needs the rest to fit. It's also oversized. As there are other books I really want to get, a long list!..., I'm sending this to the recycling pile. My oversized books shelf thanks me. By the way, if you love things celtic, give this series a try. I really appreciated her explanation of her source material -- pretty fascinating stuff.

232 In the Cold* (296) by Erickson, romantic suspense. Meh (for me anyway). --> recycled.

233 Sword-Born * (416), 234 Sword-Breaker* (460), and 235 Sword-Singer* (382) by Roberson, fantasy. I really like the world she's built here. I'd also really like the last book in the series. I'm missing two others, but the last one is the one I'm wanting the most.

138suslyn
okt 4, 2013, 8:42 am

For Piyush:
236 Marrying the Major* (296) by Maitland, 237 A Timely Affair* (416), and 238 The Wager* (299) by Cheney. (keepers)

239 Kiss Me Quick* (374), and 240 The Duke's Desire* (296) -- recycled.

241 Sight of Proteus* (246) by Sheffield, SF. And mystery... a lot of fun. Recommended.
242 The Golden Horn* (262) by Tarr, fantasy (alt hist?). Elves at the 4th crusade in Constantinople. Good read, but I don't want to get the rest of the series. --> recycled.

243 The Old Contemptibles* (293) by Grimes, mystery. A good ol' whodunit. I can see how the series would appeal to many. --> recycled.

244 Ironmaster* (433) by Tilley, SF post-apocalypse. Needs the rest of the series to really hang together. --> recycled.

Yes, I'm getting rid of stuff. Another move looms on the horizon. I'm recommending downsizing and am acting in accord with that. If we don't end up with less space we'll have less stuff in the space which is our preference.

250 Liar's Moon (288) by Kimball, fiction (American West, post Civil War). Strange little book lent to me by Andrea.

Some more 'fish' (aka regency):
251 A Kind and Decent Man* (248) by Brendan (I like the "marriage and mayhem" series)
252 An Unreasonable Match* (296) and 253 Serena (250) by Andrew (correct touchstone not on list)

256 The Unicorn Peace (344) by Lee, fantasy. Interesting world. As I don't have the rest of the series --> recycled.

And on loan from Andrea,
257 After You'd Gone (372) by O'Farrell, fiction. Mostly modern day England/Scotland. Interesting way of telling a story. Leaves the reader to decide/discover who's POV and when the event is taking place.

258 Water for Elephants (346) by Gruen, fiction. Circus life in 1931 as remembered by a 90 or 93 year old man. Good story.

259 Hawk's Way Rogues (127) by Johnston, romance. Not worth the time imo --> recycled.

260 An Unwilling Conquest* (347), 261 A Lady of Expectations* (379) and 262 Impetuous Innocent* (363) by Laurens, regency. Beautiful covers on this series. The first is being recycled, the other two remain for re-reading.

263 A Morning Like This (320) by Bedford, contemp romance. Slow start, excellent and affirming end.

264 Indian Captive (298) by Lenski, YA. Highly recommended.

More from those boxes:
265 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (178) by Dahl, fiction. I can't say how long this book has been in my library. Great hardback with illustrations.

266 Elizabeth: Days of Loss and Hope (285) by Crow, fiction. Based on true stories from her home town in Idaho, this depression tale works pretty well. The sequel (Stephanie) didn't, at least for me. Both--> recycled.

267 Messenger by Lowry (169), YA. Sad ending imo. Think it was supposed to be hopeful. All it did was made me remember all those depressing books that were required reading in school. It's no wonder, if their selections were like mine, that's folks were turned off of reading by lit classes. --> recycled.

268 The Men and the Girls (319) by Trollope. Not my fav of hers by far. --> recycled.

269 Savor the Moment* (339) and 270 Black Hills* (538) by Roberts. Unrelated, just grouped together because it's the same author. First is light. I enjoyed imagining the cakes she described. 2nd is fairly dark. Oversized --> recycled. Lili - do you want these?

271 Archform: Beauty* (330) and 272 Flash* (530) by Modesitt. Series. Quite unlike in treatment and tone. Like them both for different reasons.

273 The Sharing Knife (384), 274 The sharing knife: legacy (368), 275 The Sharing Knife: Passage (432), 276 The Sharing Knife: Horizon (448) by Bujold, fantasy. Loved the series. So unlike the Miles and Chalion books one would think it was by a different author!

277 Whiteout (468) by Follett, suspense. Good read, but don't need to read it again --> recycled.

297 The Big Book of Small House Designs (368) by Metz et al, NF, architecture. Don't be deceived by the title. This isn't about tiny houses. It's just not about huge houses. One of the best features of this book are the illustration and explanations of the green/energy saving features of the various homes.

298 Summons to Chateau d'Arc (325) by Cornelius, fiction. Very atmospheric. Kind of reminded me of Phyllis Whitney. I enjoyed it.

299 The Misenchanted Sword (272) by Watt-Evans, Fantasy. I really love this series. Didn't even realize it is a series of related stories -- and I own two of them! LOL Speaking of laughing out loud, that's one reason I read these -- they really crack me up. That said, they are not the kind of books I can read back to back, so I'll wait a bit before reading the next.

300 Modern Minimal (148) by Carlton, NF, quilting. Clear and concise directions. I'm very interested in reading some of her other books some time. These would be better borrowed from a physical library than in e-format, I think, if one is interested in using her patterns. I've marked out a few that interest me.

Hoping to find a suitable author for my regency craving I tried these:

301 Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (432) by Maclean.
And by Quinn (got snared by the series) 302 An Offer from a Gentleman (368), 303 Romancing Mister Bridgerton (384), 304 To Sir Philip, With Love (384) and 305 When He was Wicked (384). (How do they make the books the same length?)

They weren't what I'm looking for and neither was a Lindsay whose work I didn't bother to finish. Finally, though, I found one which I just loved! And, for once, they weren't stupid! A miracle :)

306 The Rogue's Return (276) by Mills. Happily she's written a bunch (there are 15 others on Scribd). I *do* hope they resemble this book in the factor's which made me happy to read it! We'll see.

309 A Heart Deceived by Griep, fiction (Georgian England). I really liked this. One of the tags I saw on this was "Christian". I'd say this is a misnomer in that it's no more "Christian" in tone than Eliot and much less so than Defoe. This is her only work on Scribd, sadly.

310 Careless in Red (896) by George, mystery. After a suitable period of mourning, I am back to the series LOL. Quite a tale of families gone awry.

Labeled "Christian" but it's done with quite a light touch. Unless one hates the idea of things Christian, then a reader of romance and intrigue (nice little mystery) might well enjoy this volume.

323 Fire and Ice (448), 324 Damage Control (464), 325 Dead Wrong (464), 326 Exit Wounds (416), 327 Partner in Crime (464)m 328 Paradise Lost (432), 329 Devil's Claw (496), 330 Outlaw Mountain (464), and 331 Rattlesnake Crossing (448).

The first two in a historical fic series by Anita Mills. There was nice closure at the end of each. And after the 2nd I had no desire to continue with the rest of the series. Maybe later.
332 Fire and Steel (537), 333 Lady of Fire (583).

Three regency type books by Anita Mills:
334 Follow the Heart (548), 335 Winter Roses (547), and 336 Miss Gordon's Mistake (270).

From Robin Hobb's Rain Wilds Chronicles:
337 Dragon Keeper (528), 338 Dragon Haven (544) and 339 City of Dragons (416). Sadly, this is NOT a trilogy and the later book(s) are not yet in the library.

I love the Rain Wilds Chronicles! There's only one more book in the series – Blood of Dragons, and it was released earlier this year.

Those Meg Cabot YAs are ones I haven't read! But I'd like to... they do sound like a lot of fun. I'll have to check out Scribd as they've been difficult to find otherwise!

Also, since I haven't been in this thread for awhile, here's a *virtual hug * for you. :)

These were probably read in October. They've been sitting in my stairwell waiting to be brought up to this desk and entered here. And, the previous sentences were written in November! So here they are:

Three regencies -- 340 The Dutiful Rake (297) by Rolls, 341 A Most Exceptional Quest (299) by Westleigh, and 342 The Perfect Rake (360) by Gracie.

343 The Case of the Howling Dog (294) by Gardner, mystery. A Perry Mason Mystery that was okay. There is one quote in it I wish I'd marked out as he describes rather well the human brain's inability to remain fixed on the horrible. The unmarked quote addressed quite well my feelings and my bewilderment over them as I've been reading an excellent book on Auschwitz.

344 A Legion of Honor (339) by Horton, hist fic (WWII). If I hadn't been reading the Auschwitz book at the same time, I might have thought the author was being extreme in his description of the treatment of the Jews in France. Instead, I feel he was moderate and appropriate to his book.

The thing is that I've read a ton of books and watched a mess of films about WWII and the holocaust. Even so, my mind just slips away from the awful reality of what went on during those years.

Still have a pile of books in the stairwell from November to enter, but I'm too lazy atm to go get them. Here's more from Scribd:

345 A Fatal Waltz (320) by Alexander, mystery. Okay, set in the Victorian period.

Some regenciesque books by Barbara Metzger. She has a gift for making me chuckle. Her books are often farcical with a few in the list resembling fairy tales.

346 Lady Whilton's Wedding (378), 347 Cupboard Kisses (343), 348 An Angel for the Earl (357), 349 A Worthy Wife (395), 350 Rake's Ransom (496), 351 A Loyal Companion (357), 352 Miss Treadwell's Talent (416), 353 Minor Indiscretions (358).

hmmm.... Scribd just wiped the rest of my "recently read" list. Oh well... less to input :)

Hope you're enjoying this season of advent.

The list on Scribd showed up!

Some more by Metzger:
354 Wedded Bliss (545), 355 The Scandalous Life of a True Lady (549), 356 Saved by Scandal (392), 357 An Enchanted Affair (378).

And the reason I stumbled across these books: 358 Father Christmas (382) by Metzger and 359 Have Christmas Card...Will Travel (232) by Knight. touchstone's not working. And I'm thinking that's okay... it wasn't a great book unless you just love time-travel romances.

Thx Roni! Same to you. T-Lyly, Sooty's back end was mauled by Githingy, but he's recovering nicely. G keeps eyeing Mitse like she's the next best thing to chicken!! ooops.

Here are some books from my library that I read in November:

The Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb: 360 Fool's Errand (662), 361 The Golden Fool (709), and 362 Fool's Fate (914). This really is an excellent series.

And one of my fav rereads by McCaffrey, 363 Restoree (268), SF.

The following books were read via scribd.

From November, 364 Secret Nights (495) by Anita Mills, regency.

And read in December:

By my new fav regency writer Lesley-Anne McLeod, 365 The Rake's Reflection (397), 366 The Harmless Deception (463), 367 The Education of Portia (413), 368 The Beggarmaid (307), 369 Clemmie's Major (331), 370 The Earl's Peculiar Burden (388, regency/timetravel pretty well done). A book of really short short stories, 371 The Regency Storybook (140) which I didn't really care for, and some longer short stories which I did and will count as one book: 372 Love's Liberty (30), Lost in Almack's (33), Emilina's Conquest (50), Comet Wine (45) and Carolina's Walking Tour (40).

Still have more to input, but that's it for now.

From earlier this month via Scribd:

Diana Cameron's Emma Fielding mysteries: 373 Site Unseen (352), 374 Past Malice (368), 375 A Fugitive Truth (352), 376 More Bitter Than Death (336), and 377 Ashes and Bones (304).

378 Tarnsman of Gor (188), fantasy. An old series that is new to me.

Two pretty awful historical romances: 379 Ice Angel (454, pre-Civil War New Orleans) by Ishcomer, 380 Desert Time (700, post civil war west) by Walker.

381 Portrait of a Spy (455) by Silva, espionage. I preferred others in the series.

And more by Metzger: 382 Valentines: A Trio of Regency Love Stories for Sweethearts' Day (343), 383 Lady in Green (376), and 384 Greetings of the Season and Other Stories (570).

Thank you all fr the lovely holiday wishes. Hope yours were great as well.

There is a stack of books in my stairwell waiting to be entered here. But for now I'm just going to include some of the items I read via Scribd. The husband gifted me with a Samsung tablet for Christmas. Makes it so nice to read these books!! I'm pretty happy with that even if I'm not so thrilled with the way Scribd functions on a tablet. However, it works and I'm reading on it so it's still thrilling!

385 Mrs. Miracle (336) by Macomber, romance. Entirely skippable.

Some regencies by Sherrill Bodine (correct touchstones not showing in the list of choices):

386 A Soldier's Heart (143)

387 The Duke's Deceit (150)

388 Scandal's Child (145)

and two short stories I''ll count as one book, 389 My Lord's Lady (61) and The Christmas Ball (55). The latter is a nice reinvention of Cinderella.

Two regencies by Jane Goodger which I liked very well. The first is half set in West Texas. 390 A Christmas Waltz (352) and 391 When a Duke says I Do (508).

Many more to list here before my 2013 is completely catalogued, but that's it for today.

187suslyn
jan 6, 2014, 6:27 pm

The rest of books read in 2013, regencies all, from my physical library follow.

392 With This Ring by Kelly (240).
393 A Christmas to Cherish (350).
394 Regency Christmas Wishes (344).
395 Christmas Keepsakes (410).
396 The Gifts of Christmas (377).
397 Christmas Betrothals (570).
398 A Time-Travel Christmas (443).
399 A Christmas Courtship (348).

jan 6, 2014, 6:39 pm

What with traveling back to the Midwest over the holidays, I did not get to read any of my Christmas regencies this year.

Have you set up a new thread yet, Susan?

189suslyn
Redigerat: jan 16, 2014, 2:50 am

More regencies via Scribd:

400 A Necessary Bride (384) by Mullins.
401 The Pursuit of Marriage (400) by Alexander.
402 Adventures of a Scottish Heiress (385) by Maxwell.
403 His Mistletoe Bride (682) by Kelly.

And from a delightful, new to me, contemporary series by Marie Bostwick:
404 A Single Thread (610).
405 A Thread of Truth (352).
406 Threading the Needle (352).
407 Ties That Bind (627).

I think that's it. ANd it's way too many. The good thing is that achieving my goal of reading less should be easier to accomplish next year!
