A heartbreaking book - a history of the last half century of conflict in the Middle East by a renowned journalist (not as yet touchstoneable):

An excerpt:

"I think in the end we have to accept that our tragedy lies always in our past, that we have to live with our ancestors' folly and suffer for it, just as they, in their turn, suffered, and as we, through our vanity and arrogance, ensure the pain and suffering of our own children. How to correct history, that's the thing."

The Great War for Civilisation is a fantastic read, as is Pity the Nation, a personal, yet comprehensive, look at the Lebanese civil war. And, as we are speaking of Fisk, I may as well tell readers that In Time of War (which is not loading as a touchstone) is a fascinating study of the Irish position of neutrality in WWII. I would recommend the latter to any one who is a student or scholar of Irish history or who specializes in WWII.
