Big Maybelle is great - also check out Trixie Smith, Memphis Minnie, and there was this tiny woman who used to sing in a band back by Willie Dixon on bass and, I want to say, Robert Nighthawk on guitar (anyone know her name? I'm drawing a blank), Rosetta Howard, Rosetta Tharpe, Bessie Smith, Ella Mae Morse, Eilen Jewell, Nina Simone. Sorry - but it hit a nerve - I love the blues.

Man, you're getting psychic. I'm listening to Memphis Minnie as I read your post. Anyway, check out Heart and Soul, 4 cds of Etta James which includes a couple of cuts with Sugarpie DeSanto; evidently they knew each other from their early days in SF.

I'm a fan of Big Joe Turner as well as Sonny Terry/Brownie Mghee.

Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Freddie King, B.B. King. John Hammond.

Pinetop Perkins, Blind Willie McTell, Big Mama Thornton, stuff from the golden age of Gospel.

Johnny Bond (Western Swing); Jelly Roll Morton; Fats Waller; Fats Domino; Hoagy Carmichael; Errol Garner; Art Tatum; Art Blakey; Cannonball Adderley. Chet Baker. Freddie Hubbard. I like horns and piano; and delta blues more than Chicago.

Also dig liturgical chant lately. Powerful stuff.

When I listen to classic rock I like strong guitar work such as from John Mayall; Jeff Beck; Alvin Lee, Pat Travers, Clapton. The Band.

#1 fave musical style? Dixieland jazz

I'm with you... I was looking at mountain property with some thought toward reversion to past proclivities. A more practical move might be Dutch citizenship: urbanity, state regulated prostitution, floating pot barges, active euthanasia when the ennui gets out of hand, and now this cherry on top (I could pad my retirement!): http://www.examiner.com/article/amsterdam-alcoholics-clean-the-streets-for-beer

Not a bad film - which is pretty much how I feel about every Jim Jarmusch film I've seen. Great sensibilities: dark (of course) gorgeous decrepitude, alternating between Detroit and Tangier. The story is light - but it has Tilda Swinton and John Hurt in it and the music is fantastic, and that made me happy enough.
