I'll post a new quote as soon as I have time to find one. This thread is where you will find it.
3anatwork.k
Sounds like The Last Hero but that may be too obvious?
4pinkozcat
Yes - it was too obvious. Not The Last Hero
5joannasephine
A reference to 'Fingers' Mazda? Interesting Times?
6pinkozcat
No, not Interesting Times
7Beorn_se_Bacaire
Sounds familiar... It's not that guy who admits stealing everything, is it? Done-it-(something or other)?
I'm going to try Men at Arms...
I'm going to try Men at Arms...
9espadrile
Done-It-Duncan. I dunno, maybe a wizard book? Random--i mean well thought out educated, of course--guess: Sourcery?
10anatwork.k
Totally random guess ;) - Feet of Clay.
11joannasephine
I know I know this quote, but can't for the life of me place it. Argh ... Guards! Guards!?
15anatwork.k
Jingo? I think this is becoming my new default...
17anatwork.k
Haha ok last try with The Light Fantastic.
18Nahkis
Thief of Time? No idea, to be honest, just pounding the keyboard for fun.
21pinkozcat
A couple of sentences preceding my quote:
'I'm not a thief, Madam. But if I were, I would be the kind that steals fire from the gods.'
'I'm not a thief, Madam. But if I were, I would be the kind that steals fire from the gods.'
27espadrile
Oh! Sorry I've taken so long. I sorta got caught up in life suddenly taking over my life . . . To make up with it, this may or may not turn out to be a tricky one.
"After all, it wasn't much more than a calendar and you could get a perfectly good calendar for 8p."
"After all, it wasn't much more than a calendar and you could get a perfectly good calendar for 8p."
33joannasephine
Is it the druid’s circles? Light Fantastic?
34anatwork.k
I thought those were computers...?
35Beorn_se_Bacaire
Kindof--they are computers for determining astrological things, like sunrise. That scene was my first thought for your quote.
36anatwork.k
Ah yes, sounds familiar now.
37Beorn_se_Bacaire
I'll give Jingo a try....
41pinkozcat
Ah! I can't take all the credit for my guess so here is, hopefully, an easy one.
Ath you withth, thur. Am I right in thinking that the gentleman doeth not want any entanglementth with the Watch?
No prizes for guessing who the speaker is but I have just realised that Pratchett must have had to reprogram his spell checker or bedeviled with wavy red lines.

42anatwork.k
Lol I know right? Typing igor speech is the hardest.
Anyway, my guess is Thief of time but whoever posts next should take my turn if that's correct. A few busy days are coming up. :)

46pinkozcat
No - not The Fifth Elephant
51Helenliz

A former neighbour of ours was involved in creating the speech recognition programme used by Pterry. I wonder did he have to lisp dreadfully to get that spelling, or edit later?!

52anatwork.k
Lol, that is something to picture is it not? However, my guess is that that Rob, PTerry's PA, spell unchecks most of the dialects...
53Nahkis
Well, here goes:
"________ was a picture of misery drawn on a lumpy pavement in bad crayon on a wet day."
"________ was a picture of misery drawn on a lumpy pavement in bad crayon on a wet day."
54joannasephine
Colon or Nobby, I'm sure of it, but from where? Nobby's elevation to the peerage? Fred's elevation to captain? Hmm ... The Fifth Elephant?
55Nahkis
Well, that was quick! It is indeed Fred, and The Fifth Elephant. Over to you!
56joannasephine
Sorry about the delay.
--- found he was waiting expectantly. He was not familiar with people who had an attention span of less than three seconds.
--- found he was waiting expectantly. He was not familiar with people who had an attention span of less than three seconds.
58joannasephine
Nope.
61joannasephine
No, and no again.
64joannasephine
Interesting guesses, but still no. Time for a hint?
65Beorn_se_Bacaire
The Last Continent--is it the God of Creation talking to the wizards, as they wander around his shop?
67anatwork.k
Small Gods? And yes, a hint may be in order at this point! :)
68joannasephine
Still no.
A hint. The person with the sub-three second attention span has new socks ...

70joannasephine
Sorry Min, but still no.
72joannasephine
No, go earlier.
73pinkozcat
Monstrous Regiment has socks in it, but new ones?
74anatwork.k
Earlier watch? The Fifth Elephant? This is blatant non-well-educated guessing guys...
75joannasephine
Still no. Does it help it I say that the character in question is a major one, living under an assumed name?
78guido47
I think it is DEATH when he/it resigns and works "...on a food cart?...".
Sorry I just can't remember.
So NO guess.
PS. Just got The Art of Discworld
PPS. Sometimes it is spelt "Diskworld" and other times "Discworld". Which is the definitive?
ETA. Mort

79pinkozcat
I quickly checked in Hogfather and it is DISC. Maybe in the American versions it is Disk; their spelling is different sometimes but Terry Pratchett is English so I will go along with his spelling.
In Wyrd Sisters it is the DYSK Theatre in Anhk Morpork.
In Wyrd Sisters it is the DYSK Theatre in Anhk Morpork.
82anatwork.k
It is Discworld in my few American editions too. Not sure where the disk comes from...
83joannasephine
Yay! Roni has it -- it was indeed Reaper Man, when Death was working as a farmhand called Bill Door.
84Beorn_se_Bacaire
I believe it's spelled with a "C" in all of my copies as well (almost all American paperbacks).
85guido47
Sorry about the disK/C comment. I checked mine and I too only see "C".
Guess I might have seen it in a review. NOT LT of course :-)

86anatwork.k
Anyone pinged Roni?
87ronincats
Oops, here I am! Been a busy weekend.
"DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING...JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH."
"DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING...JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH."
89ronincats
Not!
This is one of those cases where knowing WHO is speaking doesn't help all that much.
This is one of those cases where knowing WHO is speaking doesn't help all that much.
93joannasephine
Or is it Pyramids? (If it is, someone who hasn't had a recent go can take my turn.)
96joannasephine
The Last Hero?
98joannasephine
Don’t be! It’s good when the game goes for a number of attempts.
109anatwork.k
I know this is the book in which Death is experimenting with a sense of humour to engage better with his "encounters." Sadly, I have no idea which particular book that is. :(
I shall now try Men at Arms.
I shall now try Men at Arms.
110ronincats
No.
One of the problematical things about DEATH is that he appears in all sorts of Pratchett books, not just the Discworld canon. You could say he is ubiquitous.

114joannasephine
Ok, I'll try Good Omens?
116joannasephine
It's stood the test of time remarkably well, hasn't it? I think it's his best collaborative work.
Ok, try this one:
"Teach? No," said ---. "Ain't got the patience for teaching. But I might let you learn."

117Nahkis
Equal Rites?
Oh and one question about DEATH, regarding his appearance in books. Was he in Making Money? If he was, I didn't read the book carefully enough.

119joannasephine
Not Equal Rites, or Thief of Time.
Pretty sure Death appears in Making Money, although it's the book I know least well. Doesn't he turn up when Topsy dies?

120pinkozcat
Interesting Times? but the quote is probably misleading
121anatwork.k
The Wee Free Men? It does sound like Granny...
126joannasephine
Still no, I'm afraid. Neither Wintersmith nor A Hat Full of Sky.
129guido47
I recon it must be a witch. Sounds very much like 'granny W', but I suspect it is "nanny Ogg".
Which story? Reaper man?
ETA. I nevr kould spel. and just (after there that last poster #130) I got the name of Nanny Ogg right.

132joannasephine
With two votes for Maskerade, we have two winners! Arm wrestle?
134Beorn_se_Bacaire
Tea was an amazingly useful thing. It gave you an excuse to talk to anyone.
135joannasephine
Beorn, are you being a tricky trickster? Is it Maskerade again?
136Beorn_se_Bacaire
Who? Me? I never...
Nope, it is not.
Nope, it is not.
137Helenliz
Sounds like a witch to me. hmmm.
Witches Abroad?
Witches Abroad?
139Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither...
140anatwork.k
Is this Snuff?
141Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect!
144Beorn_se_Bacaire
Try again.
147Beorn_se_Bacaire
Pinkozcat is correct.
148pinkozcat
Yeah! In view of the political situation in Fourecks at the moment I can't resist this ...
I like the idea of democracy. You have to have someone everyone distrusts

149anatwork.k
Just to get it started (although I have absolutely no idea), Small Gods?
151anatwork.k
No way! Okay, will get home and post a quote. :)
152joannasephine
Ana, are you there?
153pinkozcat
I was just waiting out the week before I suggested that someone else takes the thread. Joanna, would you post the next quote, please.
154joannasephine
Ok, shall do.
Of course, that was before people were civilised. These days, no one had to eat beans.
Of course, that was before people were civilised. These days, no one had to eat beans.
155pinkozcat
I've read that somewhere recently. Small Gods?
157joannasephine
No and no ...
159joannasephine
Still no.
160joannasephine
Is it time for a hint?
161ronincats
Modern Times? Oh, wait, no, that doesn't qualify. How about Going Postal?
162joannasephine
No to both.
Pterry uses a variation of this phrase in at least one book other than the one I’m looking for. Think about what it could be metaphorically referring to. Think folklore (Round World folklore, not Discworld).

164guido47
OK, I'll fall for it, but only because I just got (but not yet read The folklore of discworld
165ronincats
Jack and the Beanstalk? Lords and Ladies?
166joannasephine
No, although Beorn and Roni are getting warmer ... think about what someone inadvertantly eating beans (or a bean) is all about in folklore terms, and which book deals with that issue.
(Dang it Guido, now I wish I had used Folklore of Discworld. I loved it, by the way. Be curious to hear how you find it.)

167pinkozcat
I'll take a punt on The Wee Free Men
168Beorn_se_Bacaire
Grrr--I've come to the conclusion that the context is of choosing a sacrifice...
Guards! Guards!?
Guards! Guards!?
169joannasephine
Still no. Beorn is on the right track with the conclusion, but it's a bit more complicated than just that. Think about what happens between getting a bean and being killed.
170joannasephine
I didn’t realise it would be quite so obscure. The next few lines should make the source a bit clearer:
People were still working on the ———. It had become a sort of general hobby, a kind of group home improvement.

172joannasephine
Still no, sorry.
(But thank gods you came by, Min. I was beginning to worry everyone had been abducted by elves ...)
(But thank gods you came by, Min. I was beginning to worry everyone had been abducted by elves ...)
173pinkozcat
LOL - I felt the same when anatwork deserted at a crucial moment.
Hmmm - I was working on eating the bean = becoming King so it is back to my default Mk2.
The Last Continent

The Last Continent
174joannasephine
Not The Last Continent, but your reasoning is sound.
176joannasephine
Still no. Some more text to help:
Fire buckets, some full of water, some of sand, had turned up. In places the --- was more impregnable than the city walls, considering how often the latter had been pillaged for stone. .
The --- is the same in this bit of the clue as in the previous one.

Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love, and a Hard-Boiled Egg! The missing word is "barricade" and it's Night Watch. That was a tough one.
178joannasephine
Hallelujah! Yep, it was indeed Night Watch, and an example of why I vastly prefer guessing to setting.
179justjim
Wheee!
This caused me to miss an answer on a recent Discworld quiz on which I got 19/20.
This one's got handlebars.

182joannasephine
I think it's to do with borrowing a witch's broomstick ... Moving Pictures?
184joannasephine
Ok, if not Ridcully then is it Lu Tse? Thief of Time?
190pinkozcat
Back to the stone age. The Colour of Magic?
Not my favourite book and I have never re-read it so its contents are a mystery; although I remember dragons somewhere in it.

191justjim
Dragons in The Colour of Magic? You must be imagining. (See what I did there?)
No witches, which is good, but no broomsticks either that I can recall. Not TCoM.
Bed now. I'll check back in in the morning.

192Beorn_se_Bacaire
Weren't there broomsticks in Going Postal?
194pinkozcat
Bronze age this time. The Light Fantastic?
196pinkozcat
Just starting at the beginning and working forward. No skill involved but I'm not sure what comes after the iron age so it is a good thing I didn't have to go past Mort.
No prizes for naming the speaker here:
It's not even a weapon, it's just a thing. It ain't for using, it's just for having. That's what it's all about.

Just bumping this thread back onto my home page. Quote:

198joannasephine
Naming the speaker is what’s getting me. I would have assumed Vimes, except for the “ain’t”. So probably … Granny? Talking to Esk? Equal Rites?
200Beorn_se_Bacaire
He's not talking about the gonne in Men at Arms is he?
202pinkozcat
And I thought ... I thought, good grief, this is what I'm supposed to carry? And I thought about it, and then I thought, no, that's right. Just this once, someone got it right. It's not even a weapon, it's just a thing. It ain't for using, it's just for having. That's what it's all about.
When someone finally gets around to guessing the book this quote is from it will be time to start a new thread. If no-one gets back here I might even start the new thread myself. In the meanwhile I will keep adding more and more text to bump it back onto my home page.
