My wife and I went with others to see the Book of Mormon a week or so ago. I thought that it was profane (& I don't consider myself a prude here), pretty fair music and dancing/choreography, interesting if somewhat flimsy story, and - duh - irreverent.

One side light was quite interesting in the Playbill program for B of M... There was a one page ad by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints/Mormons. I lost the program, but the gist of the ad was, you saw the play, now get the real "Book of Mormon" (free). I thought it was surprising that they would run an ad there, contrary to my mental stereotype of Mormons, bordering on the clever and much more flexible and enterprising than I would have dreamt.

In a discussion with a group of friends, two views seemed different or interesting. (1) What would people think of a series (realizing that you couldn't successfully sell such a series financially, this is just conceptual) of similar irreverent musicals about, say, the Baptists, Jewish, Catholics, Christian Scientists or - shudder - atheists ripping one and all? (2) One person said that the writers (& creators of South Park) should be ashamed of themselves for picking such an easy target.

Anyway... What did you think about the musical? Any thoughts on it in general, concept or just as a musical?

The rock version of "Jesus Christ, Superstar" is great.

Parker and Stone have, in the past, made episodes of South park that have parodied Islam, Christianity in general, and Catholicism and Evangelical Christianity specifically, Mormonism, and Scientology. They seem to be pretty much equal opportunity parodiers of religion.

The complete show on Islam never saw air time. the sponsors cut out most of the comments in spite of Parker and Stone's objections.
