2013 All Star game vs. watching a Dung Beetle at work

Give me the Beetle all night long. Positively spell-binding compared to the pitiful exhibition Tuesday. Over the years, slowly but relentlessly, the All Star Game has become as mind-numbing and purposeless as the NFL's Pro Bowl. That is entirely aside from the force-fed patriotism on FOX-TV. O well, at-least we'll be getting rid of Tim McCarver and his ever-flowing fountain of foolishness.

All all-star competitions have been rendered pointless by the advent of mass broadcasting of sporting events. If you want to see Mike Trout or LeBron James or Sidney Crosby or Robert Griffin, just wait, they'll be on tv soon enough. Baseball drove a second stake through the heart of the all-star game when it introduced interleague play in the 90s. Baseball was the last holdout of all-star games that were worth watching, but that time has gone. The professional leagues should turn their all-star competitions into the professional equivalent of all-American squads in college sports: give the honor but don't bother playing a game.

I disagree, I was able to attend the 2012 All-Star game in KC. Despite the NL jumping to an early lead (and the heat) the game felt competitive, a far cry from the joke that is the Pro-Bowl. Plus two of my sons will forever be able to say they saw Bryce Harper and Mike Trout's first All-Star appearances.
