This place is my new favorite bookstore, and it's going to take a LOT to knock it to second place.

We had just finished the Alaskan Cruise, and had booked an extra day in Seattle because we were told it had some really great bookstores. The Consignee at the hotel had not even mentioned it. He hadn't been to Elliot Bay Books in years, opting for Twice Sold Tales, which was nearer his home. In fact, he wasn't exactly sure of where Elliot Bay Books was, except that you could take the First Street bus there for free, and it was kind of several blocks north. So, we took the bus north, and got off a block sooner than we needed to. It was just one of those go-with-your-instinct decisions. I just had to soak in the neighborhood. A bit down the block, across the street, I read across an awning Wessel & Lieberman Booksellers. I took some pictures of it (as I did with EVERY bookstore I found on this trip). But the goal was to find Elliot Bay, so I made a mental note to come back this way. Several doors down the block, on that same side I found Globe Books; took a picture; made another mental note. Moved on. Further down the street, the next block was Elliot Bay -- to be discussed in that thread, in the near future.

We bought too many books (can there be such a thing??) at Elliot Books, and bought 2 more at Globe Books, and it was now late in the day, and we arrive at Wessel & Lieberman Booksellers. My wife wanted to explore some of the other shops we passes between Globe Books and here, especially one door that led to a hallway in the basement of this former hotel. So I was free to wander, and wonder.

The first thing that struck me was how clean the place was -- not a speck of dust anywhere. The whole front area was books about Art. A young woman at a desk offered to keep an eye on my (Elliot Bay) bags, and asked if there was something specific I was looking for. I had to say, "Yes, but the list was on the kitchen counter in Texas." Within short order, I found 4 Art books that either my wife or my F-i-L would be interested in. (More mental notes.) I spent perhaps 90 minutes working my way to the back of the store, reading every title of every book, marveling at the bindings (some brought tears to my eyes), the condition of the books, through Philosophy and History and Science, and finally to a table displaying some magnificent books of my favorite genre -- Books about Books. All in superior condition, most of them First Editions, and reasonably priced. There was another young woman at another desk in the back. I asked her about whether there were other copies of the books on the table, or if I should take the displayed ones. I was advised to take what was out, or perhaps what was on the wall to my left. There was a bookcase, measuring 10 feet high, almost 20 feet wide full of Books about Books broken out into maybe a dozen subcategories. I... was... in... Heaven!!!!

Si, in rounded numbers, about 1/3rd of the books we bought (19 in Seattle), were from W&L. They offered to ship ALL of our books, not just the ones we bought from them. And we gratefully took them up on their offer. This doesn't include the 12 other books we had back in our hotel room. The books arrived in just over a week, in 2 boxes. My wife, a school librarian who is familiar with receiving books, opened the boxes, and was more than impressed with what she found. Each book was carefully wrapped in butcher paper, and had plenty of padding around it.

Wessel & Lieberman Booksellers is a bookstore that cares about books and its customers. I was impressed with every aspect of my experience there. I'm absolutely doing business with them again -- as soon as I get the cruise paid off. I took 2 copies of a pamphlet they had – named every bookstore in Seattle. I made sure the Consignee got one of them.
