I've been surprised to see that so far I'm the only LibraryThing member who owns any of John T. Edge's "American Story" quartet. In each book in the series, Edge surveys the breadth of a specific american dish, visiting legendary restaurants and talking to notorious specialists.

They aren't high art, and Edge specifically disclaims them from being hard-core histories, but they are a lot of fun. Just about each chapter includes a recipe, usually derived by Edge but inspired by places or people cited in the preceding chapter.

Fried Chicken
Apple Pie
Hamburgers and Fries
Donuts

(In double-checking the "touchstones" for this post, I found that a few people had other copies of the books that hadn't been combined into a single work, so it's not quite as odd as I thought. Still, these are fun books and worth checking out.

Hey, thanks for mentioning them. It may be years before I get to it (at the current rate), but they'll be on the mental radar. :)

Oh dear, why is American food so unhealthy? We must have some classic American specialties that are good and good for us. Clam chowder, maybe? Or is that European in origin?

All these books are on my to read list. I'm a fan of Edge's - I think he's a great writer and foodie. I always enjoyed his articles in the Oxford-American magazine.

I'm surprised too, although I have the books (except the hamburger one) and haven't cataloged them yet. The Fried Chicken one in particular is fun.
