Took my nieces books shopping yesterday. The older one found a book she'd read in school and some other learning to read books.

The younger one found a Tasha Tudor illustrated book and wouldn't let go.

Myself, I bought Rumer Godden's Fu-Dog with illustrations by Valerie Littlewood.

I already had Little Plum illustrated by Jean Primrose, Miss Happiness and Miss Flower illustrated by Gary Blythe, and Mouse House illustrated by Adrienne Adams.

I recently ordered The Kitchen Madonna by Rumer Godden, hopefully illustrated by Carol Barker.

I might have ordered a few Tasha Tudor illustrated books for my niece and myself today. Maybe.

There is a really wonderful thread in the Tattered but still lovely group about illustrators for Wind in the Willows.

Who are some of your favorite children's book illustrators?

Hmm. Garth Williams. Robert McCloskey. Hilary Knight. Nancy Ekholm Burkert. Clare Turlay Newberry's Marshmallow. Nancy Willard's Pish Posh Said Hieronymus Bosch, illustrated by the Dillons.

And my all time favorite picture book, Eric Beddows's Zoom at Sea.

I came to Clare Turlay Newberry's work later in life, but oh! is it ever lovely!

As a child, I loved Louis Darling's illustrations for most of Beverly Cleary's books.

As an older teenager, with my first job being at Waldenbooks, I started collecting some beautiful editions of classics illustrated by Michael Hague and Greg Hildebrandt.

I still buy tons of picture books even though I have no children. Japanese picture books are among my favorites because they really put so much effort into the production values.

Mouse stories are some of my favorites.

So,
Jill Barklem - all the Brambly Hedge stories
Marjolein Bastin - all the Vera the Mouse series
Jane Pinkney - The Mice of Nibbling Village
Maggie Rudy - who builds the sets and characters(!) The House that Mouse Built

Had to share this image from her blog page. Does it remind you of a Norman Rockwell painting?? BTW, that's a roasted walnut.

Helen Ward - does an exceptional job of The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse

Gyo Fujikawa . I love pretty much all her books, and it isn't Christmas without her version of The Night Before Christmas.

I also really love Kinuko Y. Craft with her beautiful fairy tale settings.

Reading to my daughter, I have been pleasantly surprised by James Mayhew -- his books are really charming.

I love Marla Frazee's illustrations,

and Trina Schart Hyman's.

Oh, and Julie Paschkis.

And I grew up loving Steven Kellogg's books.

Paul O. Zelinsky's illustrations are gorgeous.

And I too am a huge fan of Kinuko Craft's work. I can look at it for ages and keep seeing new details in it.

Lovely lovely examples. Some new to me.
Yes, Trina Schart Hyman - I think I have most of her works, even the chapter books.

My toddler daughter so much loved Gyo Fujikawa's Babies, that it never got returned to the library.

^7 Agree that Kinuko Craft is amazing!

I'm also very partial to The Girl in the Castle Inside the Museum, illustrated by Nicoletta Ceccoli. Much of her work is more adult in nature, but she's also done some lovely children's picture books.
