PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING SPAM
Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:
-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.
-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.
Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.
Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

I wish they'd let us flag the obvious spam-probes of random sentences before the links get tacked on. Those are specifically designed to evade automatic filters, and we're supposed to be smarter than automatic filters.

I do flag them right away. If it's in "Book Talk" and it's random gibberish and the user just joined, it's a no brainer to me. I wasn't aware that we weren't supposed to flag those.

If you are the first flagger of a new group, listing it here is the only way other spam fighters are likely to see it.

About my library: We plan to post and review the books we have used as a service to other people interested in web design.
Library includes The Witch of Blackbird Pond and Johnny Tremain. I really doubt those books helped with web design. Looks as if they hope to use Lt for advertizing and have included a few generic titles.

>80 MsMaryAnn: The brandonfleming one, I mistakenly copied/pasted as that was one that the initial link at first led no where, but if you follow the websites - you end up at idzineit.net which is a website marketing company. So...no big deal.
On all the other ones that I flagged, they all seemed like Type 1 spam above : This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. It seemed to me that they were all creating traffic to sites that were selling their services. Most had been around for some time, and had no books in their libraries. So, IMHO, no books plus a link to a site that is selling services is pretty spammy. I could be wrong, just my interpretation...

142MarthaJeanne
Three people have flagged it now; really not fair. There is nothing spammy about it, and the only other chemistry groups are both borderline and dormant. If this group stayed in the newest it could have attracted members.
The new member who started it is not a normal spammer profile, but has entered books, some of which have other members.

>142 MarthaJeanne: I haven't flagged the group either - I try not to be trigger-happy - but http://www.librarything.com/topic/188031 does look like a spammer's toe in the water to me.
144MarthaJeanne
I think in this case it's just a new member trying things out. He has been a member for a few days, entered a few books. A lot of new members start groups with no or meaningless topics.
147Lyndatrue
>144 MarthaJeanne: (and others) I really wish there were a way to counter flag on groups (there are counter flags for other things, but not for that). The books that new account has added are all reasonable books for that type of world. I'd suspect that the topic is more along the lines of someone testing how things work in general rather than someone setting up to spam. Those topics are usually nonsense phrases, or bits and pieces cut from elsewhere. I'm just not seeing "sdfadsf" as a sign of anything (especially because the bad stuff usually shows up pretty fast).
There is a really weird anomaly though.
Look at CALICUTLIB23's library, and then look at this work (LT says that this is a book that the two of them share):
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/siddartha/favorites
I will say that mostly, people who have a book in common with this user seem to look like this:
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/ryanwlarkin/yourlibrary
Note that there are a LOT of people (I got bored looking) that have only that book, or only that book and one other, and the account creations range over time. BTW, this is not a conspiracy theory in process. Plenty of people also have that book and one zillion others.
I'm considering contacting staff and ask if they could remove the flags on the group. Without further evidence, it seems a bit unkind.

I am sorry for starting that. I would counter-flag too, if possible.
Next time I won't post it here until I'm sure.

I wonder if the oft-repeated topic title "favorite books for 4th graders" means it's the same spammer returning for another try.

>266 2wonderY: I'm having a hard time flagging that profile. Yeah, those were two pretty spammy posts, and the only book she has is her own book. She's been on LT since 2011... I dunno, maybe if I'd had more coffee, I could come to a decision. I'm kind of surprised those posts are still there, though, considering the large number of flags (mine included).
2682wonderY
I didn't flag the profile. I left her a note.
I think she knows the value of a second post in a thread, even if it's flagged.
