You bet Rome matters. I've always seen those who believe that the world started the moment they personally started to take an interest in it, perhaps at the age of fourteen when they start to play "Civilization" on their computers, as singular failures of the educational system. To see that a previous civilization has both good and bad lessons for us, is the beginning of understanding the value of history as an enquiry, and can take longer. I find it sad that the book has to be written, but believe it a worthy effort.
