We're just a week away from the ALA's Banned Books Week, are you prepared?

In case you're unaware: September 29 through October 6 2007 is banned book week. Please, read a banned book!

If you're looking for information on banned books you can check out Banned-Books.com, Banned Books Online from The Online Books Page, or the list of banned books at Wikipedia.

My plan is to finally read The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie

Thanks for the reminder! I have quite a few banned books and authors on my tbr piles, but atm I dither between the the satanic verses as well, All quiet at the Western Front (which would be a reread), Candide (yes! obscenity! ;) ) and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. One of these will make it.

edit: I've no idea why the touchstones don't finish loading and therefore don't work.

I think I'll use this to force myself to read some of the stuff I've been putting off, as well as to further my reading list of non-fiction.

Civil Disobedience, Fun Home, Mein Kampf, The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You To Read, and The Joy of Sex shall be my list.

Interestingly enough, a lot of the ones that looked good to me couldn't be found at my public or university libraries, so I picked the ones that were, since I am a cheap-o college student.

Our local library does a yearly community read with readings and other events. This year's choice is
Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury.

I plan on reading 1984 by George Orwell and The adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. (I can't believe those 2 books have been challenged or banned in the past...crazy).

I just picked up The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things, and Athletic Shorts from my library. All are off the 'most challenged of 2006' list according to the ALA's website. I did the same thing last year, pulling books off the list for the previous year. It worked out really well, because I was introduced to some really good books and authors that I would otherwise overlooked.

I've been in an out of the Banned Books group much of the day, between other online pursuits. And I realize that Banned Books Week is not enough! There are too many books out there being banned, and I haven't read them yet. It's only June, but I think I have a New Year's Resolution for 2009. One a month?

Let's see for Banned Book Week this year...I will read a new one Satanic Verses (since I own it in my TBR pile) and my all time favorite The Phantom Tollbooth.

The human race divides itself politically into those who want to be controlled, and those who have no such desire. -- Robert A. Heinlein

A quote from banned author Norman Mailer:

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:I don't trust a man who uses the word evil eighteen times in ten minutes. If you're half evil, nothing soothes you more than to think the person you are opposed to is totally evil. -Norman Mailer, author (1923-2007)

What could be more appropriate for Banned Books?!

To honor Banned Books Week, I borrowed Fahrenheit 451 from the public library.

Noticed my posting back in June (7). I think I'll start now and read one banned book a month through next year's BBW.

ALA's page for this year is at http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.cfm
