You're right, I haven't read John Lowden's book on the Octateuchs, but I like Christopher de Hamel's History of Illuminated Manuscripts as a view of the big picture. I don't own it, but his The Book: A History of the Bible is good too.

Anyone come across a Folio Society publication called Bestiary ?
Repros of medieval images of animals - some real, some imaginary, some falling half-way between the two.
My wife and I had a copy in our shop quite recently - mixed feelings when it sold as none too keen to part with it !

I just did a quick search at
http://www.addall.com/used/
for the Title: "Bestiary" and Keywords: "Folio Society" and several copies came up which are available. Be careful, since not all of them are the one you want. The prices also vary considerably but you can put the list in order by price to find the cheapest. Information is usually given regarding condition.

Oooh, yes! It's a lovely book! I received it as a gift - one of the best I've ever gotten.

I just saw that book at a store in Chicago, but I couldn't buy it as it was too cheap! The store has a minimum credit card amount ($10) and I had no cash on hand.
When I made it back with cash, it had sold -- no surprise. I will be on the look-out for it, as it has some beautiful illustrations.
