Book Not Registering As Reviewed (Part 1)

If you have already posted a review for your Early Reviewers book, but it is not registering as reviewed on your "Books You've Won" page, please post here, and include the following information:

- Title of book
- Month you won it
- If possible, a link to your book here on LT

I have a script I run approximately once per month that can fix these quite easily.

I usually only apply this script to the books listed 3-4 months ago (so for this month, I'm processing April and May books), so that most of the winners have had a chance to receive and review their copies.

I'll watch this topic as an on-going thread where winners can post about this issue, and I can follow up with them all in one place.

You can check whether books you've won are marked as reviewed or not by going to the Early Reviewers page and clicking the "Books You've Won" tab at the top of the page.

Audiobook Format

Early Reviewer 'Add to your library' function links to add books page but no audiobook format is found (trying different providers) or there is an audio edition but I can not choose to add that one (I think they are manually entered sometimes). e.g. http://www.librarything.com/addbooks?plusbook=Dream+Things+True

I don't want to add the 'hardcover' edition to my library.

If I manually add a book, it does not link back to ER's, which is obviously what this OP is about but...

So in essence, should I just 'add' the wrong edition and make my review there?

or

Is there no 'best' way to do this, hence this posting in talk? Create your 'book' record, combine with the existing hardcover, do your review on your book, report review here?

>4 readysetgo: You have the ability to edit all your book's details. There is no reason to have a "wrong edition," you would simply correct any wrong info after adding it. However, I'm not sure why you think manually adding would mean it doesn't link to the main one? It certainly should. If you have added things that for some reason don't, post them in the combiners group so they can be properly combined.

If the audio book has an ISBN, that is a much better choice to search on than the title. However, ER books often have to be manually added, because they are new. This means libraries won't have them yet.

Hello, this is Clara53. I won the book "Beth Shaw's YogaFit" Third Edition, and wrote the review for it on Nov. 20, 2015. You can check it on my Reviews Page. I didn't get a credit for this review. Please check it for me. It seems there are two title pages for the is book on the website. My review shows on one of them. The other has all the reviews marked as usual - "This review was written for Librarything Early Reviewers". I only now noticed that I didn't get the credit. Please help me to clear it up. Thanks!

No, it was just not combined properly. Now it is - LT run a script once a month or so to reconcile the ER symbol with the reviews that were added before combinations - when that happens, you will get the credit for it.

Your review is not there. If you only have one copy entered you can only have one review, so don't worry about multiple reviews.

I've been trying to combine books, but no avail. The cartoon History of Humanism is the title. The review is saved, but it won't register until it's combined. I think.

Thanks. I couldn't even find it as an option no matter which work's edition page I went to. Maybe something snapped into place finally.

For some reason the author page was setting as empty name. Once I was able to get there, there were 4 works that could be combined, but only after I put in a canonical name. Afterwards I took it out again, and I think the name is sticking.

The early reviewer logo may take a while to appear as it's the result of a scheduled task run at intervals, IIRC.

Looks like you have extra copies of each you'll probably want to delete too.

BTW, a URL would be helpful if you need combining help. It saves a little time and trouble.

AND most of these are the easiest combining. You can look at the editions page of your work, and see if there is a combination suggested.

I've also added it to my books but the "add to your library" symbol still shows on the "Books You've Won" page.

A lot of copies of the book were trapped under another book from the same author. I moved them to the proper place - when the script runs, you should get the symbol. And you should also see that properly marked now on the Books You've Won.

Thanks for helping figure this out so quickly! Yes, I'm pretty sure the book was titled "The Little Shop of Happy-Ever-After" when it was published in Great Britain but the US title is "The Bookshop on the Corner" (which is a weird title for a story about a bookshop in a van, but that's a whole 'nother issue that we can't resolve here).

Yes, after doing some searching they do appear to be the same, so I've just combined them all now. :)

Kokie in the mail and assumed that I had won it as it was on the list in July; however, it is not showing up under Books I've Won. Sorry for being slow. I'm still confused. My audiobook edition is not available to add from any source, including searching by audio specific ISBN.

Do I:

1) Add the existing "edition or work" (hardcover etc) and edit my book/edition details?

or

2) Add manually and combine works?

Which is the preferred method? I understand this isn't specific to ER but that's where I encounter the problem and searches are info overload.

I guess I don't even really understand how the work/book/edition relationship works in this wiki style format. Been here for years too! Ha.

I would add manually, then combine if LT does not do it on its own - simply because this way you do not end up with some data that is not editable. Mileage may vary of course :)

This is an August book, so may be I'm being too soon with this, but although International Kittens of Mystery is showing in my 'Books I've Won', and I've added it to my library (manually first because I'm a new reviewer and was over-keen and forgot to check 'Books I've Won', but then I did it via the 'Add' in 'Books I've Won' and deleted the one I added manually. Quinky (ebook version) Won in Sept 2015. First reviewed it in about November, when I finally got the software straight so I could actually read the ebook version. Sometime after that I discovered that the review was gone. I now understand why --- I didn't keep the ebook, I don't really like reading them and I was sure I wouldn't be reading it again. I had deleted it from my library... Since then, I have reentered the book into my library and in July I posted a new review. It is still showing up as not reviewed.. perhaps when it was re-entered I chose a version different from the one I won. If you look at my library, you'll find the review.

I won The Cartoon History of Humanism by Dale DeBakcsy , via Early Reviewers, and it does show that I received it (which I did). But, when I click on the title so that I can review it, I get a message that this title cannot be found. Therefore I have been unable to submit a review for this book. I see that there are a handful of reviews for this book, so it must be working for some?

ETA: This was from the June 2016 batch.

I don't see it in your library, ValerieAndBooks. Add it and you should be OK. I think I may have had to add mine manually, but there may be a library source now.

I just combined a couple of editions and I didn't see any stragglers.

Bookmarque (comment 87), I should have been a bit more clear -- when I click on the title so that I can add it to my books, in order to review it -- that's when I receive the message. When I try to add it to my books. The message that states the title cannot be found offers a list of links of different sources I can try, and none of the the listed links pull up this title :-( . Thanks for looking at it!

that's why I said (and .Monkey. echoed) that you need to add it manually if none of the entry sources have it. I had to add mine manually.

Adding a book manually is not hard. I prefer it to using a bad source that needs lots of editing.

I have not received credit for posting my review for Still Here, which I won in July 2016. I think this is because I added it to my library without going through the Early Reviewers page, although I then did it the standard way and reposted the review, and deleted the first copy, and it didn't help - actually, I think works need to be combined. The version I can get by clicking 'add to my library' is not the same version as I see when I click the book in the Early Reviewers page. It is the same book, and everything about it is the same, except that they appear to have separate LibraryThingers attached to them. As an added complication, when I clicked on the link to International Kittens of Mystery that appears in the Books You've Won section, it took me to a completely different book (Northlight by Deborah Wheeler), which I suspect might be why combining might not be working!

I have done my review for Purgatory's Angel, but it looks as though there are two copies of the book represented. One put in by EarlyReviewers and the other by members. I couldn't figure out how to put in the review for the one inserted by EarlyReviewers, but successfully placed it under the other edition.

It's very strange; some of the other reviews have the icon, but the work itself is missing the "Early Reviewers alum" indicator. The work does appear in the EarlyReviewers catalog, and is properly combined with jlshall's edition.

The review was just written today, though. Give it time for lorannen's review-reconciliation script to run.

It's part of the ER reviewing policy for a review to be at least 25 words long, and I'm not sure that the ER system registers that the review is 'there' until that 25-word threshold is reached.

Marking it as received doesn't make a difference. It's whether or not your copy is in the right work. This also doesn't always register. Anyway, it is in the right work now, and if it doesn't show now, it should after the monthly update.

Newer members may not realize that the computer can be very pedantic about making sure that two titles are identical before combining, so that minor differences in how a title is written mean that the new copy is not recognized as being the same. This is very common on ER works, as they are usually new books for which LT has not yet collected the variations. (Titles are compared until the computer sees a : or reaches a certain letter count, so differences after that are not recognized. Which is a different problem, but also easy to solve.)

I received a Early Bird reviewer book from the June batch, The book is called You Can Fly A Sequel to the Peter Pan Tales written by Chuck Rosenthal. I had to enter the book manually because it doesn't show up anywhere. I've now got it on my home page with all my books and it's showing twice because the blank cover came up with no writing on the cover and then I added it again by cut and paste so the book has a cover. I've also reviewed the book but when I go to books I've won it doesn't show that I have reviewed the book and it still asks "add to library"? However on my home page it says I reviewed the book.

I won this book through library thing and just got around to reading it. Although I didn't love the characters at first I did enjoy watching their love and obsession grow and evolve. I felt that Elise was more of a social experiment for a privileged rich kid and never really understood why she loved Jamey so much. I found that both characters lacked depth and personality. The author focused more on how different their cultures were and less about what was keeping them together other than sex. White Fur was a quick read but I don't know if I would recommend it to anyone.

I don't know what's happened to link these two very different books together, but it's been like this for a year!

I won the audio of KNOTS by Gunnhild Oyehaug from the July batch.

I have put both the book and the audio in my library, and they show in my library. I put my review on both items. But, when I go to the area where you say if you've received the book, it keeps telling me to add it to my library, which I have already done.

I tag my books with a "Finished" date, which is my main sort, but one could tag them with "Reviewed" (and some character that would make them show up at the end of the list alphabetically, like ZZ-Reviewed, and then do a reverse sort on the tags). I have a domain that points to my tag search, where my books display in chronological order of being read (or, on older ones, on bookshelf position, which is filed chronologically) ... http://btripp-books.com

Basically, computers are not really intelligent. The computer only puts a new entry into an existing work if it is really, really sure that it is the same. This means the same title (with certain limits), the same author, and the same ISBN. If it's not sure it puts the entry into a new work and lists it on the edition page as a potential work combination.

The title has to be the same, including spelling, including case, including how certain characters are coded.

The author has to be exactly the same. John Smith, John W. Smith, and John William Smith are different.

The ISBN as well. This will be different if there are different versions published: hardback, paperback, ebook, American and British publishers, translations...

In this case, the edition page showed two recommendations which I could combine. If you look at http://www.librarything.com/work/20327490/editions you will see the three different ways the book was entered.

Most entries didn't bother with the ISBN at all. The longer title listing of the majority entry is different within the limits that the computer checks. This isn't an issue on older books because eventually most of the likely entries, from most sources, have already been entered and combined. But a brand new book hasn't gone through this yet, so it happens a lot with ER books.

I received this book in December 2017. This link (https://www.librarything.com/work/20605334) doesn't show a section to review the book, but I have posted my review on several other versions of the book (https://www.librarything.com/profile_reviews.php?view=DeeLinnea) all of which I have added to my library, and none of which have allowed me to get the credit for reviewing the book. Originally when I went to review the book, the ER version linked to a Peppa Pig book, so I just looked up the title in the Add Books tab, and added a different version to my library and reviewed that one instead. The Book wasn't marked as reviewed after that, so I chose to paste my review on multiple versions of the book, hoping one would work, but none of those came up in the ER page either.

As of Tuesday 10/23/18, I have still not been credited for my review of Invisible. (see #341 above) and the review is not showing.

I decided to reenter the book, so I did that. I marked the book as "woops, I didn't really receive it", then started again from scratch. One thing I did notice was that on the "Books You've Won" page, it usually says, "Now go and review this book." That phrase was nowhere to be seen, so I entered the review from the "Edit Your Book" page.

There's definitely something odd going on with "Invisible" (for future reference, pinklady60, deleting and re-adding almost always makes things worse).

There aren't any stray uncombined copies showing on the author page:

I will add, pinklady60, that nobody blames you for deleting and re-adding the book; "I'll just start over from scratch" is a very natural impulse in a case like this. Unfortunately many LT issues touch on different parts of the system getting out of sync, and so the resolution tends to be "don't touch anything for a few days and see if it settles down", which "starting over from scratch" interferes with. Unless someone warns you about this, though, there's no reason you should have known!

I've messaged them directly to ask for permission in testing some things out using their account (without touching the existing record, of course). Just finding the book already listed by someone else on LibraryThing doesn't allow you to directly add it to your own library.

I’m having the same issue as some others. I've added The Angina Monologues by Samer Nashef to my library and reviewed it multiple times, but the version I reviewed isn’t the one tagged as an Early Reviewers version so it doesn’t appear as reviewed on my Early Reviewers age. Thanks for your help, I love this group!

I have won quite a few books in the Early Reviewers Program and always completed a timely review – except for this book that I received in late October. I discovered my error my error and wrote a review some time in January. But I was not credited with the review. I don't know if I exceeded the 90 day review limit. On Feb 20th I noticed that I still wasn't credited with the review and thought maybe my catalogue listing didn't register correctly. So I deleted the listing and reentered it. But I still haven't received credit for the review. And last month was one of the few times I did not receive a book I wanted. :-( I'd still like to be in the running for future picks.

It might be worth noting, despite the official opinion stated above, that konallis' Selected Poems by D.H. Lawrence was missing a book ID but always had the work ID. That allowed it to go through combinations and separations. The bug in "Newly added book in limbo" did not likely affect reviews.

Meanwhile, the missing ID bug does prevent the crediting of reviews.

Is it possible that two different subtitles or different data sources have something to do with the noncrediting of reviews for the book, The Hollywood Book Club?

I just now realized that a review I posted a while back didn't save and the review is not showing up as registered review on my Early Reviewers books won page and it's still showing 'add to library' even though it is listed in my library and when I tried adding it again from the books won page it just told me it was a duplicate ISBN. It's a November batch book that I received in January, so I'm not sure if it's way too late to do anything about it now, but here is the information just in case.

To add a book manually, go to the bottom of the "Add Books" page, and click on the "add manually" link. You'll see this page: http://www.librarything.com/addnew.php Just fill it in and save. You may find that you need to combine the resulting page with the main work page, but that's easily done.

If you enjoy riding in vintage cars - a little over the speed limit - this book is what you want to curl up with upon your safe return from the road. A homegrown mechanic who showed aptitude for engines while growing up on the family farm fixing tractors, etc. Arnie knew how to build the engine, repair that engine and drive cars to big success on the early drag racing tours. The book is chock full of photos and 4-color ads for autos of the 1960's. Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick book design reminds me of the Call Me Ishmael Phone Book by Kent & Smalley
