I'm confused about short stories within LT. This comes up most often for me in series list. Here's an example with quite a few short pieces included (http://www.librarything.com/series/Psy-Changeling). The novels and published novellas are very clear. But there are a good number of short stories published only on the author's website or in her newsletters. These stories are included in the series list, and I see that at least some of them are included in other member's libraries.

However, I cannot seem to find a way to add them to my library. For instance, #1.1 in this series is the short story "The Cannibal Princess." Following that link leads me to the following: http://www.librarything.com/work/11713324. However, none of my attempts to add this title to my books were successful. I clicked on the add button on the work page: this title does not appear in the search. I went to Add books and entered various combinations of the title and author name: ditto. I went to the author's page and found the story listed there. I followed that link and again end up on the same work page, with the same inability to add the work.

I see that I can manually add this story. But what a lot of work when the item is already identified in the database! I see in this particular case that the story is in the library of 48 readers. Did each and every one of them have to manually add this title?

Or am I just missing something?

If it wasn't published anywhere then you're not going to find it in a source, you have to add it manually.
Also it's pointless to search for a work first unless your intent is to just check the libraries of those who have added it to see what source they used (if any). Clicking the "add" link from a book's page doesn't do what people want, just go to the Add books page and search from there.

Personally I dislike the following

* Burning Up (Anthology 4-in-1) by Angela Knight Short story "Whisper of Sin", 0.2
* Whisper of Sin by Nalini Singh Short story "Whisper of Sin", 0.2

As "Whisper of Sin" exists as a standalone work (in LT terms), I don't think that the anthology is needed in the series list at all. As the link should be via "Is contained in" from the work for the short story. Also in some cases, with maybe more popular series and stories, a short story might appear in ten or more anthologies, collections and magazines which would make the series display totally unwieldy.

>1 Shelda17: Yup. Every short story you see in as a unique work was added manually, unless it has a specific look up on Amazon (which is doubtful.)

It's possible to find things that were found from other libraries or sources through Overcat, though anything manually entered won't be in there. (A request has been made for a manual entry search of the LT database, but it's been... ignored.)

Absolutely. The anthology is not part of the series, just the short story.

LT doesn't allow you to use LT itself as a book source. This is because Tim believes that data you get from Amazon or a library is better than what fellow LT users have entered (which many here think is a bad assumption but Tim's the boss).
