I don't know if any of the other members of this group are based in the UK, but if you are... any hints, tips, tales? Any members who are writers (and, duh, readers), check out

Is anyone going to see The Night Listener? (I notice a few of us have that book.) Robin Williams is starring in it, so it will be incredibly creepy (think One Hour Photo) or utterly ridiculous .

Hi. I Live in London, used to live in Toronto as well. I'm sure you've found all the good bookstores by now. I haven't uploaded my full library yet. There is a lot of Sci fi in it, they are my partners. Somehow I've misplaced alot of my books from Canada. I had everything Margaret Atwood ever wrote once, but thats missing. Do you know Gabrielle Roy? I want your opinion on this... Gabriel Roys work reminds me of Bulgokov. Especially A Country Doctors notebook.

Conference on Cultural Rhetorics
May 16-18, 2007
East Lansing, MI
Michigan State University

Call for Papers, Performances, and Exhibits

What are cultural rhetorics? Who writes, performs, displays, digitizes, crafts, and creates these rhetorics? What do they look like? How do specific cultural rhetorics differ from, overlap with, and/or engage in dialogue with Cultural, Ethnic, African American, Asian American, American Indian, Arab and Middle Eastern American, Chicano/a, Latina/o, Indigenous, Disability, Queer/LGBT, Performance, and Working-Class Studies? What are their relationships to Rhetoric Studies, Theory, and Pedagogy? Composition Studies? American Studies? Literary Studies? Digital, Visual, and Material Rhetorics? Scientific, technical, and professional communication studies? Are there pedagogies of cultural rhetorics? Methodologies? Theories? Performances? Materialities?

We welcome papers, performances, and exhibits that articulate, engage with, provoke, analyze, theorize, and practice cultural rhetorics. We are particularly interested in scholars/artists/performers/writers/knowledge workers that engage rhetorics that are too often marginalized, tokenized, silenced, and ignored. We welcome work that happens at the intersection of various disciplines and fields in the humanities and invite scholars, artists, and writers to join us at these intellectual and creative crossroads. Please join us in creating a space of radical interdisciplinarity in which to explore rhetoric as a distinctive constellation of methods, methodologies, and pedagogies for the study of culture and to think through how the frame of “culture” expands our understanding of rhetoric and the responsibility for rhetoric to be ethical in its engagement with culture.

While we are very interested in proposals for individual papers and panel presentations that address these questions and/or further scholarship in these areas, we especially encourage art, craft, multimedia, or imaginative resentations/demonstrations/installations that provoke other methods of intellectual engagement as well.

Proposals of 300-500 words may be submitted via US Mail or online. For the proposal form and submission process please visit our website: http://rhetoric.msu.edu/cultrhet. Please direct any questions to Malea Powell at powell37@msu.edu.

The deadline for submissions is January 1, 2007.

Are there any political types in here? I'm curious about the word on the ground re: New Jersey.

The state supreme court's decision was a remarkable and exciting advance in equality for gay couples. Perhaps the most amazing thing was that all seven justices supported equality. The 4-3 decision was interesting in that the majority found that the current arrangement was discriminatory and directed the legislature to enact a remedy while the minority would have imposed gay marriage immediately.

This leaves the legislature with 180 days to change the law. As a long-time New Jersey resident and student of politics, I do not believe that it is likely that the legislature will pass a gay marriage bill. I suspect that we will get a Vermont-style "civil unions" law. In a year (2007) when the entire legislature will be up for reelection (New Jersey holds its state elections in odd-numbered years) and right after an increase in the sales tax, I don't think there will be the votes to pass a bill authorizing marriage for gay couples.

That said, New Jersey has become one of the most progressive states in this area. The results of this year's federal elections may well influence what will happen next year. There is at least one poll that shows New Jerseyans support gay marriage. We'll see. I, for one, didn't believe we'd get this far this quickly.
