Hi everyone,

our group has gone a bit quiet again, so I thought I would share my enthusiasm for a recent re-read of 'Great Expectations.' I had suggested it for my book group and was pleased to find that even those who are not keen on Dickens really enjoyed this one.

I am not surprised; what a wonderful book. I had not read it for several years and was constantly surprised by the freshness of the writing, the control Dickens has over his material and the marvellous blend of drama and comedy. What a great gallery of characters and settings. I am lucky enough to live in Kent and have seen the marshlands described so eloquently.

Do others have Dickens favourites which demand re-reading every few years?

Every Christmas I read A Christmas Carol

It reminds me of how we should live.

I have two favorite Dickens' works that demand to be reread by me. Those would be David Copperfield which I seem to find myself rereading every few years and Christmas Carol which I read every year at Christmastime. This December, one of my real life book clubs will be discussing Christmas Carol, so even more incentive.

I have not read Dickens since undergrad 30 years ago (save A Christmas Carol a few Christmases past), and have kept the three Penguin paperbacks for eventual re-read. I loved each of them: Bleak House, Hard Times for These Times, and Little Dorritt. I've always wondered whether I should pick one of these up first, or read something new. I follow this group in part to help nudge me one way or another, though to be honest I've not yet decided to pick up a Dickens quite yet.

I'm certainly due another Dickens outing. Thanks for the nudge.

I read another Dickens every year and will keep that up until I've read them all, before I think about going back. But so far if I did so, I'd choose The Pickwick Papers.

Haven't re-read any of Dickens lately but in the past I've done re-reads of A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, and Great Expectations. Always catch something new with each read!
