Starting in here midway through the year. Guess, I wanted to make a fashionably late entrance. :-)

Although 2018 didn't begin this way, my current reading goals are really un-plans. I would like to simplify everything and focus on reading some really good books stored on my Kindle, supplemented by the occasional library book. My reading preferences are historical fiction, nonfiction (science/social science/memoirs), with a few classics or contemporary fiction novels tossed in for some variety.

If anyone is interested, the majority of my future updates will be here
since I am not a motivated multi-group "post"-er.

Title: Nellie Daredevil, Reporter, Feminist
Author:Brooke Kroeger
Rating: 4 Stars

“I always have a comfortable feeling that nothing is impossible if one applies a certain amount of energy in the right direction. When I want things done, which is always at the last moment, and I am met with such an answer: "It's too late. I hardly think it can be done;" I simply say:

"Nonsense! If you want to do it, you can do it. The question is, do you want to do it?”

~Nellie Bly

Elizabeth Cochran began her life in Pennsylvania during 1864. Through circumstances and luck (both good and bad) she would eventually find herself in a pivotal role as one of the first female "stunt" newspaper reporters.

Brooke Kroeger provides an in-depth biography of Bly's career and to a lesser extent, her personal life. The book is well researched and events are easy to follow, however the story loses some of its momentum due to an overabundance of detailed information. Since Bly didn't leave behind any journals or diaries, the book was primarily fact oriented without providing much insight into her personal thoughts and most motivations. That left me to wonder how much of Bly's journalism career was based on a created persona.

Recommended to readers interested in US historical figures, feminism and journalism.
