Selling the classic 5 book set that's only a couple months old as I just upgraded to custom bound by Lyra set. If it's allowed, I would be happy to sell at a discount here first for anyone looking for them (maybe through pm, not sure of rules). They are currently on eBay with a low starting bid. If not allowed, please delete my post or just post below it's not allowed and I will edit/deletw the content.

>1 Roccosem: what is the Lyra set? I am not happy with the EP set nor the Folio set. Tolkien deserves better!

>6 Roccosem: That's awesome! Congratulations! Yes, please share pics when they arrive. Also good luck selling your EP set. You should have no problem selling them either here or Ebay.

>6 Roccosem: that’s more like what I wanted. However you have to have a book to rebind. Which one did you use? I am not pleased with either the EP or FS editions. I would love your set with about 12 full color Alan Lee or Ul de Rico illustrations.

Lyra wws selling them already rebound. It's the 1977 FS first editions which are sewn and letterpressed. That's what made me spring. I imagine if you could get the Alan Lee's, Lyra would be able to remind them nicely.

Not to hijack the thread...

Anybody with experiencing of having an old book rebound?

I’ve had an idea on doing something for a time but haven’t found the books at the right price/condition yet.

>12 HugoDumas: directly by purchasing rebound Victorian classics Hugo and Sue) indirectly through personal contact as I was contemplating leather binding my dissertation and some of the Routledge set not published by EP as DLE. There are plenty running from bind your dissertation (University towns like Champaign IL) to incredible artisans who do restoration or very fine binding. Simply Google book binders around you and you will see many with samples of their work on their website. Decent rebinding will cost you $500 a volume without restoration. This includes full dye color leather (more if you cannot live with pig) marbled end paper, hubbing, trimming of edges, a satin ribbon, with minor stock spine designs and title in gold. It will cost more if you want gild on pages and if you want artistic design on spine and cover. So if you have a favorite signed first edition worth thousands, the investment is worth it. Most people use these services to impressively restore centuries old family bibles.

>10 Roccosem: investigating now. I see you can get these Alan Lee Illustrated new oversized 4 volume HB for under $100 on eBay or through Amazon. But it would cost easily $2,000 to do a decent leather binding. I wish EP would take this version and leather bind it in DLE style.

HD - Thank You kindly for telling us your experience and sharing your knowledge of restoration.

Helps a lot!

Lyra might be willing to do it for less, considering they are cheaper than starting with folios (I'm guessing). Mine were only $1200.

>15 Roccosem: as an update I did get the 4 volume Alan Lee set new for only $91; and sold my depressing EP set. In another post (Victorian Routledge) I determined that the cost for binding in goatskin locally is a reasonable $145 per volume with labeling on spine.
