Anyone else still trying to complete their 2018 Bingo challenge? I'm currently reading Francis Duncan's Murder for Christmas, which I'm counting for the "beautiful cover" square. I wouldn't really call it beautiful, but I do find it very visually appealing.
After this, I have just one more square to fill -- "published more than 100 years ago"! What are you reading to finish up your 2018 Bingo challenge?

I am working on Old Christmas by Washington Irving for the set during a holiday square. Then I will only have one more, related to the Pacific Ocean, for a full bingo card. Still not sure what I will read for that one.
3Kristelh
the square that says contains an X, can that be any where in title/name or the first letter?

I have two squares to go:
I plan to read The Autobiography of Malcolm X when my turn comes up in the library queue.
I'm listening to the excellent Pacific: Silicon Chips and Surfboards, Coral Reefs and Atom Bombs, Brutal Dictators, Fading Empires, and the Coming Collision of the World's Superpowers by Simon Winchester for the Pacific Ocean prompt.

I have had one square left open for a couple of months..."rank in the title." I have a couple of books on my TBR that I could/should read but neither appeal to me right now. I'm headed for the library soon and I think I'll check out The Lieutenant by Kate Grenville. Or something.

>3 Kristelh: I interpreted it to mean having an X anywhere in the title, not necessarily the first letter. I read Unexpected Night by Elizabeth Daly for that square.
>5 clue: If it helps, I read "rank" to include titles of nobility as well as military ranks...my chosen book had "queen" in the title.

>5 clue: and >6 christina_reads: I did the same thing and read something with "King" in the title.

>3 Kristelh: That's what I did. I chose Return of the Sphinx, by Hugh MacLennan, for that square.
I have one book left: Black Money, by Ross MacDonald, which will be used for the "relates to the Pacific Ocean" square because it is set in California.

>4 EBT1002: Thanks for mentioning Pacific. It sounds interesting. I will see if I can find a copy of that for my last square.

Finally blacked out my card with Black Money!

>10 rabbitprincess: Congrats, rp!
I filled the "originally wriiten in a different language" with a Chinese classic, Die Reise in den Westen. First complete translation into German, 1319 pages long, this took me almost a year to finish. But definitely worth the time.

I filled the poetry or play with Gerhart Hauptmann's Die Weber, a play about Silesian handloom weavers rising against their employers in 1844.
Three squares left, and I have even found a book for the Pacific Ocean, I think.

I've also completed the final square of my Bingo card, "published more than 100 years ago," with Wired Love: A Romance of Dots and Dashes by Ella Cheever Thayer (published in 1880). I liked it overall, although I wanted a happier ending for some of the secondary characters!

Tiedemanns Tochter filled the relative name slot, otherwise not worthy of mention. A tale for teenage girls from the 1950s, totally insipid.
16EBT1002
Well, the library queue for The Autobiography of Malcolm X is moving ever so slowly so I think I need to choose something else. I am confident that I'll finish Pacific by Simon Winchester by December 31.

And another dud for the Pacific Ocean square: In distant waters is part of the Nathaniel drinkwater series, and in this he is sent to the Pacific with vague orders to do something about Russian incursions into Alaska and Canada. Dull language, dull characters, dull plot.
Only one more to go, the one set on a holiday, and so far Baldacci's Christmas train is not winning me over.

I read too late last night but completed The Romanov Empress by C.W. Gortner. This works for the "rank" square and finishes my Bingo card.

Thanks everyone, I looked back and found a title with x in in so now all I have left is "read a cat, which I've done but I always leave this one for last. So I will be filling that in soon and will be done with Bingo 2018, on to 2019.
20MissWatson
I have given up on Baldacci's The Christmas Train, not my kind of book at all. My sister has set Der satanarchäolügenialkohöllische Wunschpunsch aside for me which I'm going to read over the holidays. It's set on New Year's Eve, and thus I will have completed my second Bingo card.
21Kristelh
>20 MissWatson:, two bingo cards, that's great!
22EBT1002
I've decided on The Essex Serpent for the X square. I've been wanting to read it but had forgotten about it over the past couple of months!
23MissWatson
>21 Kristelh: Thanks!
I filled it with a placeholder for now, The mysterious Mr Quin which starts on New Year's Eve, because I wanted to see the blacked-out card. Just in case I don't get to the book by Ende, holidays often interfere with reading plans.

I finished The Essex Serpent for the X square. But my BingoDOG images have disappeared -- from all my threads! Does anyone know what happened?

>24 EBT1002: Something must have happened pretty much LT wide. The cards seem to have disappeared both on the 2018 and 2019 challenges.
