Hello everyone! I’m new here (clearly). This site is a bit overwhelming at first with trying to find all the rules to follow and good groups to join. Still not entirely sure how to do anything honestly. 😂 Anyhoo, my name is Megan and I am a 23 year old booktuber/bookstagrammer. By day I’m a college recruiter. I love helping out people who are lesser known that want exposure so I thought would be the perfect site for me! I look forward to getting to know everyone. Thanks!

Not sure if this is allowed but if you’re interested in seeing my booktube I’m mythicalmegan on there!

Hi, Megan,

Have you taken the tour? http://www.librarything.com/tour/ That will help you navigate.

As far as "good groups to join", that, of course, depends entirely upon your interests. Check out the main "Groups" page: http://www.librarything.com/groups or use the site search page to hunt for something: http://www.librarything.com/search.php

Well, this isn't a promotional site. Book promotion is allowed only in certain limited areas (See How Authors Can Use LibraryThing), so please don't push books, etc. except where permitted.

Hi and welcome,

There's a lot on LT and after two years I'm still discovering new things available. You can start of with the tour http://www.librarything.com/tour/ and FAQ covers all basic topics, both for cataloging your own books and the social aspect of the site https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Help_and_FAQ

Talk About Library Thing is the go-to group if you still have questions about something in particular. As for choosing groups, you can search them by tags and subscribe to those of interest, which makes all topics in those groups appear in Talk

Advertising as such is not allowed, but you should probably check the terms of service for details

Well, plugging your own book is mostly not allowed, but there are plenty of groups where people post what they're reading and their opinions thereof.

That wasn’t a way to promote my own books, I don’t even write- what I meant was that I thought I could discover lesser known authors on here and promote them on my personal social media (booktube and bookstagram). So I thought this would be the perfect site for me to find lesser known authors.

It certainly can be. One way is to check out the review page on your own profile. It will show reviews of books you have cataloged, but from other people. Sometimes you can find a kindred spirit who reads books like you and you can discover new ones. It's pretty magical.

>5 mythicalmegan:

Thanks, mythicalmegan. That wasn't clear to me from your original post.

I think if you check out the Hobnob with Authors group (which is the one place where promotion is allowed), you'll find many of those "lesser known authors" talking about their books.

Also, if there are particular genres in which you are interested, you could look at groups about those genres. There are groups here for people interested in science fiction, mysteries, history, etc.

When you go to a Work page (the main page for title), you'll find LibraryThing recommendations and Member recommendations for other books. So if you look at the Work page for a book you've enjoyed, you should find recommendations for similar books, and those might well be by authors with whom you were not previously familiar.

Welcome! The more books you have in your library, the better and more interesting recommendations you'll get, both from the site and from fellow readers. I've found plenty of new-to-me authors that way!

Hello, all. I joined LT because I am interested in cataloging a personal (not mine) library of over 1000 hard-cover books, predominantly non-fiction. Any suggestions about methodology, where to start, etc., would be most appreciated. Thank you.

>9 pkwyldy80: That will depend on how old the books are, what language they are in and if they have ISBNs with barcodes printed on them.

If they have ISBNs with barcodes and are in one of the languages we have enough sources for, download the app on your phone and use the scanner there to scan the ISBNs - then adjust the rest from the desktop version. Or use another scanner - but the app one can add a lot of books fast.

Work shelf by shelf -- don't grab too many books at the same time :) I prefer to work on my desk and not next to the shelves - that way I can check and adjust as I am going instead of logging 100 books and then chasing them to fix them. :) But that is up to you.

If they have ISBNs with no barcodes, using one of the import functions may be faster. Same for non-ISBN books... Or books from languages where we have zero or no books.

A couple of notes:
- If you are going to create collections/tags, figure out your system now - it makes it easier :)
- If something looks weird, correct it. If you cannot or don't know how, come and ask someone to help - if it is your own data, we can help you with an explanation, if it is the site data, we can assist.

Welcome to LT! :)

PS: Starting a new topic will get more people to help you than using someone else's topic :)
