>3 littlegeek: There are a bunch of books that have already been on sale on and off during the last month or so, but I didn't feel compelled to buy any of the ones I hadn't already snagged. I was sorely tempted by the new waterproof Paperwhite, but I couldn't rationalize the purchase as mine is only about 15 months old.

I did order the PS4 Pro, though. I've been using my PS3 as a bluray player (and up until recently my main streaming device) for over 10 years, and it's still working well, but there are a few apps that aren't supported anymore due to its age. (I'm looking at you, HBO GO.)

>4 clamairy: We got a new apple.tv recently for that reason.

My Kindle works just fine. I hold on to devices until they are no longer supported. I don't get why people want to always be in debt and paying for the latest thing.

6clamairy
jul 15, 2019, 8:32 pm

My then 5 year old Paperwhite was working fine, but the resolution on the 2018 version was better, and you could dim it to almost nothing for reading at night. So I splurged when it was on sale and gave my daughter the old one. She loves it. But I have to admit a waterproof one would be great for my new life. I just keep mine in a ziplock bag when I'm on the beach.

>6 clamairy: "I just keep mine in a ziplock bag when I'm on the beach."

That's a great idea. Keeps out moisture and sand in one fell swoop, (obligatory, "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.")

>25 divinenanny: Oh gawd yes. I want those too.

I want the Ben Aaronvitch October Man novella but object to paying almost as much as for a novel... When it came out I went "Squee! How much?" I got burnt on The Furthest Station. (What would have made it worth the price would have been adding in the short stories - I asked him when he was going to publish them as a book and he said he hadn't got enough word count yet.)

Same reason I marked some of the Hugo novella nominees down because they were #x in a series and the rest of the series was too expensive to purchase (and weren't in the Hugo packet). The only novellas I thought reasonably prices were the rest of the Binti series, but I wasn't sufficiently interested to add them in.

27divinenanny
sep 10, 2019, 1:49 pm

>26 Maddz:

I made an exception for Ben Aaronovitch because I am just a big fan, so my birthday money is going to a hard cover of The October Man and I bought The Furthest Station full price too, knowing it was just a novella. I did get burned on Ajax Penumbra 1969 which barely counts as a novella I think and I just did not check if it was a full book or not. I also bought The Slow Regard of Silent Things hard copy, I just could not resist a new if short Rothfuss.

I do try to check ISFDB if the novella's on my wishlist are in any anthologies, but for parts in series after the first that is very unlikely :(

The first one I did not finish, but that may have been my mood at the time, it is regarded as a good book generally.

The second I found amazing. Fantasy, bit of grim dark I seem to remember, but something I could not put down. I would put it in the line of Patrick Rothfuss or Joe Abercrombie.

Jonathan Strange is not one I'm sorry I read, but I never really connected with the characters and now don't remember much about it.

>149 NorthernStar: Ha! I'm an only child, so I find sibling relationships fascinating. My mom and her sister don't really like the same kinds of books. I think it was the Jack Reacher series.

153Sakerfalcon

I read far more than my sister does, and when she does read it is more likely to be non-fiction. My mum reads a lot, though mainly mysteries but my dad really didn't in spite of him commuting on the train every day (which is one of my main reading times). It is funny how different families are.

I enjoyed Locke Lamora the first time I read it, but when I tried to reread I had to put it down. It just seemed gratuitously grim and sweary and I wasn't in the mood. I think that's when I realised that I don't really like heist stories. I still think the setting is great but I'd like a different kind of story to take place there!

154libraryperilous
apr 24, 2020, 12:08 pm

>151 Marissa_Doyle: I'm going to try this on Kindle. If the footnotes don't function smoothly, I'll have to wait until I have space on my shelves for such a voluminous volume.

>152 divinenanny: Aww, it's nice that you've helped him find something he likes when he's relaxing on vacation.

>153 Sakerfalcon: I feel like a grim heist kind of defeats the purpose of a heist plot anyway.

My parents both love to read, so I grew up around books. Oddly, I didn't have close friends who also were readers. I find middle grade novels in which the protagonist meets a book friend very charming. You read so intensely when you're young! It's nice to find someone your age to share in that.

The Library of the Unwritten is $2.99 at the US Amazon site at the moment.

155clamairy
apr 24, 2020, 12:22 pm

My parents were also big readers, mostly non-fiction for both of them, but completely different areas of interest. Only when she got older did my mom start enjoying more fiction, especially spy novels like le Carre's.

156-pilgrim-
apr 24, 2020, 12:41 pm

I grew up in a house like C. S. Lewis describes "with books two deep on the shelves". I don't think my parents' tastes overlapped much either (his was the science and history, hers the Eng Lit, overlap on the novels) - but that gave me a wonderful range to dip into.

157libraryperilous

>155 clamairy:, >156 -pilgrim-: Yes, my parents have divergent tastes in books. My dad reads exclusively nonfiction: history and physics. My mom loves classics, poetry, and mysteries. I read in each of these subjects, although my science interest trends more toward zoology. I developed my own taste for adventure fiction as a child and became attracted to SFF as an adult.

I recently converted my mom to middle grade novels. She thought they wouldn't hold her interest; now she reads them regularly.

apr 24, 2020, 4:33 pm

>154 libraryperilous:, >158 saltmanz: Just one note on the Kindle footnotes, at least on the Kindle e-readers. Sometimes the longer footnotes get cut off in the popup and it’s isn’t apparent that you’re missing text. This was definitely the case for me with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and I've seen it in other books. The smaller footnotes work fine, but you can’t always tell if anything is cut off because it usually happens after a complete sentence or paragraph. Some of those footnotes are practically short stories in themselves. I’m not sure if the Kindle Fire had the same issue.

It’s still a pretty seamless process as long as you’re aware of the potential problem, but takes a couple extra screen touches on each footnote if you want to be sure you're seeing everything. On the e-readers, at least the more recent ones, when you touch the footnote it brings up a popup style window that overlays the text. From there, there's a link that will take you to the actual footnote location with the entire thing. Then like >158 saltmanz: described, there should be a quick way to return to the main text.

>220 Marissa_Doyle: I'm finding the Benson book a bit of a slog actually. I read a chapter every now and then, but it's a bit repetitive. In all honesty, today's headline about the CofE comes as no surprise when you read about the Benson family history. It was a University of Chicago freebie a while back and I thought it looked interesting.

I preferred Larry's shorter fiction - Antrobus Complete is a favourite. I really ought to finish The Alexandria Quartet because there is a family connection: my great-aunt was the poetess Céline Axelos, who resided in Alexandria, and I believe she knew Durrell when he was in Egypt. Sadly, my French is too poor to actually read her poetry, although I have the books.

Audible is having a sale through April 1 with quite a lot of audiobooks on sale for $5, including a lot of SF&F. It's for members only. I don’t know how their sales work for other countries, but I’m in the U.S., so it might not be available elsewhere.

For a minute I thought they’d put my entire wish list on sale. As it was, there were 8 audiobooks from my list in the sale. I had to stop looking at the other titles in the sale because I started getting tempted by other things that weren’t already on my list and 8 was bad enough. :)

One of the ones I grabbed for $5 was Theft of Swords, which I’d planned to use my next credit for and had intended to listen to pretty soon. I also got Storm Front which I’ve wanted to try for a long time, and which I'm even more curious about now that I’m enjoying his Codex Alera series so much. I probably won’t listen to that one until next year, though.

It looks like Audible is now having one of those 2 for 1 credit sales that >282 clamairy: warned me about! Looks like the sale lasts for a little under 6 days from now.

One of the offered books (Soulless) was on my wish list, and there's one other book (Elantris) that I had on my general list but not my audiobook list. It's a decent candidate for the audiobook list since it has sequels planned that aren't likely to be out for a few years, and probably would have ended up on my audiobook list eventually, so I may pick up both of those. I have to wait a couple days before I actually have a credit to use first, though. :)

Ents, Elves, and Eriador: The Environmental Vision of J.R.R. Tolkien (Culture of the Land) by Matthew Dickerson is on sale for $2.99 today from Amazon, Kobo, B&N and Apple. I don't remember hearing about this one before but it's pretty highly rated here on LT.

>317 clamairy: the problem wasn't with your link, but that I wanted the Canadian site, which didn't seem to have the sale. So I looked at your link, and then looked up anything I was interested in on both kobo (because I can load them directly) and amazon.ca. Got two books from kobo, and one from amazon. I'll add them to my library tonight or tomorrow.

Amazon has 10 free kindle books available until April 24 for World Book Day. I got mine on the Canadian site but they should be on the US one as I was redirected from there. Here’s the US link-

>1 clamairy: Does anyone have any deals for nicely made bookmarks here?? All I can find are paper ones and I would really like a fabric one like these because I rip the paper ones so easily or better yet cut myself: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/845435370/bookmarks-beaded-crochet-tatted-elegan...

But I'm not really sure what kind of fabric I should be looking for to make sure I'm not damaging my books, etc.

Hopefully someone will have a better suggestion. Pretty sure thinner is better for not damaging books.

>325 clamairy: I quite enjoyed Gilgamesh the King, though I was (and remain) not at all familiar with the original epic.

I also read Tanith Lee's Secret Books of Paradys last year and came away impressed, even if the whole collection isn't particularly cohesive. $4 is an absolute steal for that much content. (Ugh, I hate the 2020s connotations of the word content used like that, but I couldn't think of a better word!)

>326 saltmanz: I listed to an audible version of the original epic a year or two ago. Fascinating stuff. I'm not sure the 3.6 star rating here on LT is enough for an enticement for me to purchase the novel, but I might borrow it from OverDrive.

I still have to look at the fiction and non-fiction sale list. It's a bit of an overload to do it all at once.
