I've just been filling in some Common Knowledge for various LT authors, including an Aboriginal author. Her online obituary includes a statement along the lines of "The author has received permission from the family to use (name) full name and images of her in this article."

From a position of almost complete ignorance, please may I ask:

Do / how do Australian library catalogues respect Aboriginal cultural norms when it comes to names and pictures? Do any libraries have an online document re. best practice?

Would Aboriginal communities expect international catalogues like LT to respect those norms, and would that be a reasonable expectation?

For example (ignoring any Western issues around copyright) would you expect the permission for the original obituary to use names and images to include implied permission for others to re-use them?

What would you recommend as a way forward?

Many thanks.

So thoughtful of you to be so sensitive.

Bereavement practices can change according to the community, so there is not really a standard 'cultural norm' for Aboriginal Australia. It's complex - exception for use of names and images is typically given by elders on a contextual basis, such as an obituary (so I don't think other permissions are implied) and usually some sort of warning is provided that the material contains images/references to the deceased. However in many cases the term of avoidance is time-bound too (typically 12 months to a few years), after which point it is it okay to use.

The ABC has a published policy for general media and online publications that you could look at (https://edpols.abc.net.au/guidance/abc-indigenous-content/), or you could contact the National Library of Australia directly for their policy as it seems to be internal (https://www.nla.gov.au/what-we-collect/indigenous).
