Though I'd consider myself as 'on his side', whatever that may mean, he's guilty of some really woolly thinking, there. Ours is very clearly not the society he wants it to be; it's one very much shaped by the 'socially harmful and wasteful' products he's decrying. If it's to be represented 'in all its diversity', that's pretty much what the BBC is doing now. Like it or not, if we want meaningful and quality stuff we are 'elitist' and part of a minority. We need to find convincingly arguable ideals alternative to 'democratic and truly representative'. I admit I don't know how we do that ...
