Question about The Newcomes

Good day! I am new to the group, joining specifically to ask the below question but also excited to hop on board as I have been a lonely collector of Limited Edition Club books for years and am happy to find a bunch of people like myself all at once - it's always been a person here and there at random moments.

Anyway, my question concerns something that was laid into my copy of The Newcomes - The Illustrated Illustrator, a photo of which is below. Was this a usual insert for this publication? I am guessing it was, but my Monthly Letter makes no mention of it, so I am not certain. Thanks in advance for any info!

Welcome to the group!
I have just checked, and, unfortunately, my copy of the Newcomers does not have the insert that you photographed.

Welcome, and congratulations on this very interesting bit of ephemera!

This is actually a brochure-type publication that opens up to six pages total. Ardizzone certainly was committed to illustrating The Newcomes, more so than I am committed to reading it. I will get around to that task some day. It is interesting to glimpse his seemingly strong friendship with George Macy.

RuefulCountenance welcome!

I believe this was sent along with the LEC Monthly letter as a promo bit. Similar items were sent out for Gill's Hamlet, the 1932 2vol Three Musketters, and Gargantua and Pantagruel. Every once in a while the LEC would send out a specimen text page or illustration with a Monthly Letter to drum up excitement for an upcoming title. I have some very nice examples related to An Icelandic Fisherman, the Grimm Brothers' Fairy Tales, Batouala, Last of the Mohicans, etc.

Macy was an astute marketer.

On a separate, but related topic how do you get that photo into your post? I tried to cut and paste, but to no avail. I'd like to share some examples with the Group.

The long story about posting images is here:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images

The short version is: Upload your image to one of the Photo Sharing sites on the web: For years I used PhotoBucket because it was a free site, then they started charging an annual fee and when I didn't pay they never let me re-download years worth of pictures I posted on this site. Now I use Imgur.com-- another free site--but it's not without its faults and I am currently looking around:

https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-imgur-alternatives-for-uploading-sharing-images/

Once you have your images on a site used for sharing, they provide a link to where the picture is posted and it requires embedding it in HTML format and pasting it in the thread. Imgur's links look like this:
the embedded part is between the Greater Than and Less Than markswith the web location of your picture being the URL with the quotation marks.

I have found the best site for uploading and storing pictures for use in LT threads is Postimage (https://postimages.org/). Images are high quality with lots of pixels, it is easy to use and free.

Easy to follow instructions on how to post a picture in a thread are found in the Folio Society Devotees wiki here.

>6 Sport1963: Thanks for the insight. I figured it was an LEC add-in given that it was specific to this edition. And I feel fortunate it was preserved!

Ha! I told myself some years ago I'd do that. Vanity Fair, Barry Lyndon and Pendennis, fine (altho Vanity Fair's the only one I might read again). I've never managed to work up much enthusiasm for The Newcomes....
Ardizzone's self-portrait in the last of your photos made me think of the way Edward Lear sometimes sketched himself (albeit without his beard) - a tubby little man kicking up his heels in joy or trepidation at what's happening around him.
Glad you posted this!
Jack

Welcome back! We've missed your erudition and sound judgment; I likewise haven't worked up enough enthusiasm for the The Newcomes (nor Pendennis, for that matter). Never understood why the Limited Editions Club published these two by Thackeray and never did Middlemarch--chacun à son goût.

I have just ordered iThe Newcomesi/ from an ebay seller without ever intending to read it, although I may dip in to some passages. I love Thackeray in short bursts. It was serialized in twenty-four monthly installments! However, Ardizzone's illustrations, I believe hand colored, are definitely worth having. My copy will include The Illustrated Illustrator so I conclude it was an additional inclusion with the book.
Someone should upload this to the Monthly Letter Google site so others may have it. If no one else does, I will once I receive the set.
Since i am going to separately ask for copies of Monthly Letters i don't have, it is the least I can do for the commonweal.

Regarding the Ardizzone Ephemera, if you found it hard to read:

The Illustrated Illustrator
A Translation of the Cursive

Page 1:
Dear George, Nov 4, 1953
Who is to print the “Newcomes”?
I have been waiting to hear before starting work so I could discuss type and design with the printer.
Yours,
Ted Ardizzone

PS: I have been looking at Thackeray’s original drawing for the book. These are not too good. I think I can improve on them. I certainly am going to enjoy the attempt.

Page 2:

Dear George, Nov 15, 1953
I stand reproved. The work begins at once and lost time will be made up.
About the printing I have no preference. Of the names you mention, I of course know them all equally well and have worked happily with them before. I would therefore rather leave the choice to you.
Yours,
Ted

Page 3:

Needless to say, I am enjoying the great task. I eat, sleep, and dream “Newcome” and in fact am beginning to look like one fo the characters, Fred Bayham (?), I think. I seriously propose to grow whiskers.
All my best wishes for the New Year.
Yours,
Ted Ardizzone

I hope you keep well. We are all sniffing and sneezing with the usual winter colds; but then as you know, we don’t heat our houses.
Yours,
Ted

Mea Culpa. I have made 20 full page drawings instead of 16 and have sinned indeed.
My excuse is that it was due to over enthusiasm and my hope is that ass this may be considered a generous fault it might merit early forgiveness.
I hoped you liked the coloured specimens.
Yours,
Page 6:

I was pleased with my drawings for the “Warden” but feel I have done better with these. To tell you the truth, though I fear I am boasting horribly, I think I have even improved on the work of Richard Doyle, the first illustrator. But perhaps I have fallen into the sin of pride and deserve to be smacked down heavily.

Dear George,
Your letter of the 24th May was most welcome. I am delighted that you should be so pleased with the Newcomes drawings. It creates a nice warm feeling inside me particularly as I feel rather pleased with them myself.
I have just had the colour proofs of the first four of the full page illustrations. I don’t think you will be disappointed when you see them.

Page 8:

Now it is over and I have done with drawing its many characters, it is a little like parting with old friends.

Page 9:

October 10, 1954
I haven’t started on these yet as I have been laid up during much of the past two months with sciatica. My old dog has Rheumatism in sympathy with me so we are a sorry pair.
However, I have thought somewhat about them and it occurs to me ..
Next page is October 20, 1954
I am tempted to make another drawing on the same theme now, but having said goodbye to all my friends I can hardly resuscitate them. To tell you the truth, however, they don’t quit me easily and I find Colonel Newcome’s nose appearing on the most unsuitable faces.
Caption: No good – you have given him the wrong nose.

Yours,
