October 2020 Group Challenge

Thank you to DeltaQueen for the idea for this month's challenge!

Check the last book you read from the list and note the letter that the author's last name started with - then pick a book where the author's last name starts with the next letter in the alphabet.

(eg.) If you just read Emma by Jane Austen, then you would be looking for an author whose name begins with B such as T.C. Boyle or Samuel Beckett

if there isn't a book that fits this criteria, then move on to the next letter. So if I had read all the B authors - I would move onto the letter C.

My last read was Rebecca West, which puts me at X. Made it hard for myself!

I am currently reading The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann and hope to finish it before the end of the month, therefore my letter will be "N". I think I will be reading A Bend in the River by V.S. Naipaul.

>2 JayneCM: My last one was Billy Liar by Waterstone so I did the same thing. However, I am halfway through Rickshaw Boy by She Lao so I think I will hurry up with that one and use it for the challenge.

I'm working on A authors this month (including Kingsley Amis' Lucky Jim for the September challenge), so will pick a B author for October - probably John Barth's The End of the Road.

>4 Yells: I am currently reading A Town Like Alice and hoping that I will finish in time! T will be a lot easier, I think!

Finished A Town Like Alice, so I can now use T for this challenge - thank goodness!

I just finished Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis - on to the L authors. I have quite a few in my TBR list. I might go with Le Guin because The Dispossessed has been on my TBR for a very, very long time. John Le Carre and Wyndham Lewis both have multiple entries and I have never read anything by either of them.

Finished Rickshaw Boy by Lao and was planning to jump in to the Magic Mountain read so I might go with that. Not sure if my brain can handle that though so we will see how it goes.

Took a bit of a detour and read All the Pretty Horses by McCarthy instead.

Eventually scraped in a B author Before the end of the month with The End of the Road by John Barth.

I went for A Sentimental Journey by Laurence Sterne - I finished Hadrian the Seventh at the end of last month and had planned to read Tristam Shandy, but as I thought I'd stick a toe in the water and try a shorter book by the author. It was fine, but as I get on in the list, there are a growing number of books I don't want to read. I decided to read 1001 from the combined list, so that gives me the freedom to skip (maybe just for now) the books I don't really fancy. As things stand, I will be unlikely to read Tristam Shandy.

Time has pretty much got away from me this month and I didn't get a chance to pick up A Bend in the River so I am replacing it on my shelf and looking forward to my November choices.
