I adore Settlers of Cataan. I've played the board game version of Game of Thrones and thought it was ok, I'd play it again. I like Risk, I've heard good things about Middleearth Risk. Any recommendations for multi-player strategy games?

Have you looked at www.boardgamegeek.com ? If not, do so now. Basically there are many different styles of games and you may or may not like all of them. Also how many players do you normally play with? Some great games don't work for some numbers as well as they do for others.

Carcassone, with or without any of its expansions, is great! Technically, not a board game, you play it with tiles, but it is good fun. I found the Middleearth Risk to be a bit unwieldy (it's a HUGE map), but Risk 2210 is a lot of fun. The new Risk (2210 and Godstorm) games are based on points and there are only 5 turns. Now with 4-6 people that can still take 3-4 hours, but you can play, complete and win a game in a sitting, which is nice. Starfarers of Cataan is fun too.

andyl: I had not! I'll have to look at it later, though - I can get away with LT at work, but I can't afford to donate any more paying hours to the interweb!

What's the typical price range on these things? At $40 a pop, my budget stretches to Mr. Fantastic proportions pretty quickly.

I'm in the UK so prices are more expensive here. However Carcassonne (which radiantarchangelus mentioned) should be less than $20 (thoughthammer.com has it for $16.22). There should be plenty of choice in the $20 to $30 range. You should also consider some of the card games (games such as Bohnanza and Citadels) which should be a bit cheaper.

card games!! I do love card games. I have not played either of the two andyl mentioned. Andyl, have you played: Guillotine (sp?), Fluxx, Chrononauts, Chez Geek or Munchkin? I don't know if they are readily available in the UK. Anyway, I think the Munchkin come in at the most expensive - around $20 usually. The others are in the $8 to $15 range and are also fun. Oh, and Lunch Money - but that one really does need 4 or more players.

Andyl, I heard you say you're in the UK. Where's everyone else on here from?

My husband and I collect European board games and love to host games nights. If you're in/near/visiting Los Angeles, look us up!

I've played Fluxx and Munchkin. Basically we can get everything you have (more or less) and vice-versa. Both are enjoyable light fare but nothing more. I think that elvendido was looking for something more involving.

The reason I suggested Bohnanza was that it involves a lot of trading (but it really only shines with 4 or more IMO). Citadels, I suggested because you are trying to build up a city (by playing cards in front of you) and it involves a fair bit of take-that. Both games will play up to 8 players and are pretty easy to learn.

Oh and Settlers of Cataan is really good, Middle Earth Risk is REALLY good. The optional game thingy......um....where you have to take the ring into Mordor is kinda weird and stupid put on the whole it's really good...... yeah what ever

I love playing Cities and Knights of Catan and Fluxx. It's been difficult for me to get a group together to play lately, so I'm missing them right now.

I used to be an avid boardgamer, but for some reason that has fallen away. I have a garage full of several hundred games. My favorites have always been multi-player, but of more historical accurate rather than generic. Things like Empires of the Middle Ages.

I am 40 years old and still play quite a lot of boardgames, 17.00-22.00 every wedensday, usually on saturday and often on sunday as well.
The favorites are Samurai Sword, Agricola, War of the Ring (and yes I have gone insane and ordered the Limited Edition. It is my Precious!), St. Petersburg, Advanzed Civilization, 1856, Factory Manager, Power Grid, Carcassone, Container, Hotel Samoa, Wildlife, Stellar Conquest, Genoa, Race for the Galaxy, Dungen Lords, Robo Rally and many more.

I play Arkham Horror, which takes so long. Over the last 10 years I've been playing boardgames as a relatively quick alternative to role playing games. I think an ideal balance would be more complex than Cluedo, Monopoly etc, but less complex than Arkham Horror.

My most favourite board game is Chess. I don't like any other game rather than Chess because I like to face challenges and Chess game is enough as a great challenge.

But what about other great abstract games. Maybe other chess alternatives such as Shogi or Xiang-qi? But there are plenty of nicer abstracts which I find to be more enjoyable than Chess - for example Lines Of Action or Arimaa.

All of these offer a challenge - some might say that some are more challenging than Chess.

Chinese Checkers?

Which incidentally isn't Chinese nor checkers.

In my opinion it is a slow game without any drama in it, and is mainly tactical. About the only good thing you can say is that it plays 6.

Games I like playing regularly include Carassonne, Settlers of Catan, Stone Age, Imperial 2030, Munchkin, Gullotine, Love Letter, Seven Wonders, No Thanks, For Sale, Monopoly Deal, Gloom, Fluxx, Chez Goth, MtG and The Three Commandments.

Just learned Russian Railroads this weekend. My copy came yesterday :-) along with the copy that I am sending to my brother.

21> How many expansions have you played with 7 Wonders?

I've had Russian Railroads since early December. Haven't managed to get it to the table yet.

I've played Munchkin, then moved and can't find anyone to play it with any more. :(

I play games such as Through the ages, Agricola, Le Havre, St. Petersburg, Powergrid, Dominant Species, Nations, A few Acres of Snow, Carcassone, For Sale, Money and a lot more

I also tried Russian Railroad a few weeks ago, interesting game.

We also run a small boardgame Convention, 100-150 participants once a year, 6-9th of March is all about boardgames for me at least.

25> Have you tried the Le Havre app? It makes me relutant to pull out the actual game. I love not having to fiddle with all the bits. Have you played Ora et Labora? How about Terra Mystica?

We usually go to one convention in early May and one in November. We used to go to Prezcon which is coming up quite soon, I think.

24> Where do you live? Have you found the gamers yet?

23> May I suggest you do?

27Ardagor

26> Have not tried any apps for games, just the cardboard version. I have played Ora et Labora, but I am not very good at it, have not won a single game. I have not played Terra Mystica at all.

We go to the Spielmesse in Essen, Germany, every second year (October), and some local conventions, Spill-O-Rama in Stavanger (September) and of course our own convention, Midwinter in March.

>1 elvendido: Settlers of Catan and the Game of Thrones game are quite different beasts. You're looking for something more like the latter? When you say 'strategy' do you specifically mean area control games or just something more abstract? As #2 pointed out, the best place to go for board games is boardgamegeek.com

They made a Risk Legacy game (which I own but haven't yet played so I don't have details). It's supposed to be played over several sessions and is unique because you actually mark up your board and carry over what happened in the previous games to the new games along with some spontaneous twists. I'm not big on Risk myself, but this one really got my attention with the concept of continuity.

I've heard Star Trek: Fleet Captains is a good, well-balanced strategy game too, but I also haven't yet played my copy (so many games, so little time!) But that one is more expensive so is probably off the table.

Personally, I'm quite fond of Niagara, which is a pick-up-and-deliver set-collection game with a really fun moving board and a great theme. Doesn't take very long to play either. There is sweet joy in causing your opponent's canoe to go careening over the waterfall. Sweet, sweet joy.

I keep a catalog of my board game collection here on librarything on my secondary account.

OH! I almost forgot! Small World! That's the one you should try for a risk-like area control, but with randomized power sets and a 12 turn limit.

Edited to add: (Aaaand I just realized this was a necromanced thread. Ah, well :) Perhaps someone else was looking for a games.)
