Apparently Amazon US will not stock this, probably due to legal issues between Harper UK and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (Tolkien's US publisher). And I've seen it said that Amazon Canada will not ship it to the US.

However, it appears that Book Depository, which ships internationally, will ship to the US.

Always interested in Tolkien's illustrations, both for the style and particularly for what they might reveal about his ideas. Ideally, I'd purchase the illustrations separately, with annotations as to when they were made, what they depict (and where that fits in the Legendarium), and so forth. Have to look into Christopher's book and see how complete that it.

Not sure I'm tempted enough to purchase another set of LotR to get them.

Yeah, I suspect that many to most (all?) of these JRRT illustrations have already been published in J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator.

It appears Christopher's edited Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien contain far fewer, though unclear if there are any there that aren't in Hammond's.

Apparently (ironically?) Harper US has now announced that it is arranging to buy the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt trade division (which includes the US Tolkien material) from what will I suppose become Houghton Educational (the part that actually makes money). Probably this will result in UK and US Tolkien publishing folding into each other, but almost certainly not in time to affect the JRRT-illustrated LotR.

>5 Crypto-Willobie: My copies of the "deluxe" version of this edition arrived today. The packaging is pretty fancy, as are the "extras" that accompanied the book itself--e.g., the facsimile Book of Mazarbul leaves based on JRRT's design. The illustrations included in the book all have been published numerous times before, but always separately--hence this new edition. I'm happy with it.

Yeah, I'm getting those "it's out for delivery now" emails, so expect to see it soon.
