Hey all, I'm a paleontologist by trade, having been inspired by the Jurassic Park books when I was younger. I'm looking to find a fine edition of these books, kind of like Easton Press but not by paying a huge amount on Ebay for them. Is there any other publisher that has done this? I know there's a Folio edition, but I just don't like their books, or illustrations for that matter. Is there any other sci-fi publishers or printers that have done it?

I think Franklin Library did an edition of JP, but that's going to be pricey and similar to the Easton edition.

I'm still waiting for one to be published. Maybe with movie coming up there might be something being re-published

Franklin’s was a signed first edition. Ebay currently has 6 listed for sale in the $1,000 range, an excellent example of overpricing. With 6 available and another on abe.com, it can’t be very rare. Franklin never told us how many their authors signed.

I rather like the FS edition :)

>8 astropi: me too. To me it would seem a bit weird to have some mega elegant or arty private press edition of a bombastic mainstream novel like this, let alone some quasi-victorian leather bound tome.
That said, the recent Suntup Isle of Doctor Moreau looked quite nice and I could imagine JP in a similar style.

>8 astropi: I tried getting into FS books, but they're just not for me. Moreover, chatting with some of them folks in the Folio group really turned me off from FS collecting altogether. They're quite abrasive! And so weirdly territorial.
I have the first editions of Jurassic Park and Lost World, but they're in tatters and prefer something more luxurious like EP, or, as I've recently been introduced to, Suntup.
Does anyone know if there is a suntup chat group on LT?

Accurate observation. They quit shipping to Lithuania (where I live) and some other EU countries not long ago. Didn't even bother to find a sollution.

I suspect he or she is just waiting for someone to state that EP isn’t fine press or have a dig at Suntup.

>12 GusLogan: As was said in another thread, we’re clearly getting Bob-ing lol

>14 Gilded_Tomes1: He or she was a special kind of troll named Bob, trying to pass as unknowing of many things FS-related, but was all over the place on that group and had an aura of negativity around him/her when it came to Folio. And he/she loved to criticize the Folio group in other groups.
He/she was ultimately banned for trolling around mid-August (and a subsequent account).
Let just say many people see a pattern here.

>12 GusLogan: I absolutely love Easton Press, and it's mostly what I buy, have been for years now. And there's a lovely LT poster on here who recommended Suntup to me, and I've been salivating over the books they produce but most are sold out now!

>15 Nerevarine: That kinda sucks about having trolls on this website. Actually, I saw one not too long ago on here making disgusting sexist remarks aimed at me, and flagged the troll and had him removed, or at least his comment. I have no patience for trolls, or sexism.
Everyone's entitled to an opinion, and if it hurts people's feelings that I just don't jive with a book making company, they need serious counseling. And they'll have to grow up and get over it, because not everyone will like the same things they do.
You have a great day, friend! :-)

>17 Gilded_Tomes1: Not that I disagree about what you said. Trolling, sexism, racism and everything in between are indeed reprehensible behaviors.
I also agree that we should all share our (sometimes diverging) opinions freely and respectfully. But I’d also argue that someone who writes off a company because of two or three ‘‘abrasive’’ fans on a forum also needs to grow up and get over it.

>10 Gilded_Tomes1: If you prefer Easton to FS, then you likely prefer more uniform books. Suntup, like FS as you know, has ecclectic style. Each book are individually different. And, Paul Suntup has just had an survey for wishlists. You might write him a wish for Jurrasic Park.
Folio Society Librarything group territorial ? To say it short .. naah, very much naah, opinions yes, but that is mostly it`s own loyal and long time collectors few in numbers that are blaming their own publisher for taking a different course, relative new owners and all, a good thing opinions are allowed. Jurrassic Park might to some have fallen into that category. Folio Society books are also to most available firsthand or secondhand, so there is no need for it`s fans to be deeply territorial. It stands on it`s own 1000 feet. To a degree mass printed books, exluding the limited editions which are first comes, first served. So I fail to see where territorial fits in here.
Suntup chat group are mainly on Darktower / Suntup - the more commerse site are with Suntup fans on facebook (try to say you prefer Folio Society to Suntup books over there ? - I`m just pulling your leg)
Different publishers, different books, most of us try a little of something by everyone, and most publishers Folio Society and Suntup have both high regarded customer service, so no need to punish publishers for nothing.

>18 Nerevarine: I didn't refuse to collect Folio books because of some abrasive fans on LT. I truly don't care at all what any of them think. I chose to not collect Folio because I don't find their books at the same quality as other publishers. I just don't like them. I almost jumped in with Dante's work, but that release was way overpriced for something of that caliber, which, in my opinion, is not at the level of other fine press books. If you like it, that's great; it's just not good enough to be on my shelves. But, like music, everyone has different tastes! :-)

>19 Pellias: Hi there, I just didn't really like the vibe I saw on Folio's LT, and there's no point me continuing to go there because I don't collect Folio books. I only went there because of the rumor of a Dante LE coming out, and I love classic literature. However, the release was a complete disappointment and money grab in my opinion. I ended up spending even more for a facsimile edition of the Urbano text, with full color medieval illustrations. What a gorgeous piece of work, but in that case, it is totally worth it.
In terms of territorial, I meant the group only. I get in there to ask about the LE book, and everyone is calling me a Bob, whatever the heck that means. I think one of the peeps on here said he was a troll or something. Nothing irritates me more than calling people names before you even get to know them; I'm sensitive to it because I have had to deal with a giant amount of pretentious people in my school days. Not fun. I also found every other group to be welcoming to me except the Folio group. Maybe they're doing something wrong that attracts trolls. Whatever. Don't care at all.
Suntup looks like something I might dabble in, so I will have to just wait until they have new releases, that are actually available!

>1 Gilded_Tomes1: I don't like FS either although I own several but these are generally older editions from when FS was using the member/subscription business model. They are to my mind expensive deluxe trade editions even to the point of reprinting titles. Not fine press.
23grifgon
>22 Glacierman: Agreed — Certainly not fine press, but very nice trade editions. A few exceptions, of course, most notably the Letterpress Shakespeare.
24Gilded_Tomes1
>22 Glacierman: Thank you! I knew I wasn't the only that thought so. and yes, grifgon, the exception would be the deluxe letterpress Shakespeare, but it's tens of thousands of pounds for the complete set. A little overpriced if I do say so myself.

>21 Gilded_Tomes1: Bob? What menacing acts of tyranny spilled from everyone on that group. Yet, I could understand why. Because this must be a joke, and it is.

Everything is in the eye of the beholder, and no one has pretended FS to be fine press unless they don't know what they are on about, knowledge is key, yet it will always be fine press for some still. Upgrades. The standards are books for everyman (that buys them), and are quality reading editions, which is good for books.

But yes, to each their own in terms of preference of books

you were just there
Anyways, since folio is out of the question/ep is too expensive(and it'd be a while/uncertain for a Suntup JP), I suggest the B&N one lol. At least it's better than your tattered copy.

>27 HamburgerHelper: I never said EP was too expensive Hamburger. I just dropped 2 grand on a facsimile edition of the Urbano Divine Comedy. And I've spent thousands on EP books over the years. I pay for quality if it merits it. And Folio doesn't make the cut. As I never asked for your suggestions about B and N, you can be quiet now.
