Found: Fiction novel girl becomes a hero

I think the title starts with a Z but I could be wrong
More medieval times I believe
There’s a legend about this man
Who wore a cape and mask
He was a hero who helped the poor

A young woman lives with her family
I don’t think they have a lot of food
There’s this place they go in town to stand in line and get food
I believe she had a horse
One day she’s out with her horse
Stumbles across the hideout of the masked hero
Now she knows he was real, but he’s gone by now
She finds his mask and cape
She decides to wear the mask and cape and become the new hero
Everyone thinks that it’s him behind the mask

I believe she helped the poor and people who didn’t have enough food.
I think for some reason later in the book people want to hang her

She has a guy friend that helps her family with the horses and things.

In the end she has to run away to live somewhere else because her life is in danger.
She has to leave her family but her friend comes with her.
They realized they had feelings for each other.
Book ends on a romantic note.

One of the versions of the Zorro story?

Might it be something by Sherwood Smith?

I looked though her books and I don’t think it was any of them. Thank you for the suggestion though
