wishlist: LotR illustrated DLE

So I was in the bookstore last week coveting this boxed set of Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings gorgeously illustrated by Alan Lee.
https://www.amazon.com/Hobbit-Lord-Rings-Boxed-Set/dp/0008376107/
I looked online but could not find any photos of the beautiful painting that are found inside the books. In addition, this edition of The Silmarillion illustrated by Ted Nasmith is also beautiful.

Anyways, the point of this post is to ask if anyone has ever heard of EP plans to make a DLE of LotR, The Hobbit, or The Silmarilion using paintings by Nasmith, Lee or John Howe? I would so love that.

In all the years I've been buying Easton Press books, I've never heard a peep from anyone about the possibility of any Tolkien DLEs coming into existence. Not even a Famous Editions set. That being said, I wouldn't ever rule it out completely. It almost surely has more to do with publishing rights and restrictions set by the Tolkien estate. If EP had permission to go forward, they would have already.

>2 treereader: Yes, that is my suspicion. It just seems like such a no brainer for EP to do this that there must be something holding them back such as licensing. For example, EP is not permitted to sell The Silmarillion to the UK or to Canada. When I checked with EP customer service about The Silmarillion, this was their explanation - the limits of their licensing agreement with… I am not sure who.

I don’t believe J.R.R. published the Silmarillion - wasn’t that done by his son, Christopher? If my memory is correct about that, along with your note about Silmarillion shipping legalities, then right there that should give us a clue about how complicated the rights might really be surrounding Tolkien books.

>4 treereader: yes, you are correct. Christopher Tolkien assembled and published The Silmarillion from the many notes his father left behind. What an interesting project and labour of love that was!

>5 Neil_Luvs_Books:

It may well have been a labor of love, but based on how that work is licensed so differently, it would seem he earned and received his monetary reward for it, too.

>1 Neil_Luvs_Books: after viewing those beautifully illustrated editions of the Hobbit, boxed LOTR and Silmarillion (Houghton Mifflin) I purchased them, covered them with acrylic dust jacket protector and sold my inferior EP leather Tolkien set. I was not going to hold my breath for a Tolkien DLE. I am very pleased with my decision.

>8 HugoDumas: are you kidding? I had this Harper Collins illustrated edition. I simply gave it away. This is by far inferior to EP edition of LOR. There are red marks that appear on the text. There are also places where words are not spaced, and upper case name is attached to the previous word. Thin paper stock and I’m sure it’s not smyth sewn and not acid neutral papers

>9 fancythings: no Houghton Mifflin oversized edition from UK. Nearly DLE quality. If I were younger I would leather bound those editions.

>10 HugoDumas: ohh ok. Got me worried there. They still not better than my ep LOR lol

>10 HugoDumas: Would you happen to have a link to the edition you purchased. Last year, I replaced my EP edition of Complete Sherlock Holmes with the 3-volume New Annotated Sherlock Holmes Edition and would not mind doing the same with my Tolkien set, especially if it is an illustrated edition.

>9 fancythings: Have you actually owned and given away the $200+ Harper Collins set? Your "opinion" seems to be lifted almost verbatim from the most popular 3-star review with images for the Amazon listing from the first post in this thread... Eres Tu Jose? :D

>14 EPsonNY: my Harper Collins was not 200. And it had font and spacing issues. I’m sure many other people too had the same issues with this edition. What is your point that nobody can have Harper Collins edition and find same issues with it?

>15 fancythings: Perhaps you did own it and even had the same issues; however, you also did take your time to visit the Amazon listing and lift somebody else's review...

>14 EPsonNY: it is not available in Amazon US. It is available on Amazon Canada here. I was lucky and found it on eBay. The Silmarillion and Hobbit Houghton Mifflin editions are available on eBay and Amazon U.S.

>19 fancythings: It is one thing to have the same problem, but what are the odds to express it in an almost identical way with minimal redacting involved? Purpose: For posterity & lazy souls who do not want to search for the review

Yours:

"There are red marks that appear on the text. There are also places where words are not spaced, and upper case name is attached to the previous word.

Jose's from a 3-star Amazon review that can be seen by clicking on the first photo under Reviews with images:

"There are, throughout the series, red marks that appear on the text. There are also places where words are not spaced, especially (but not exclusively) where an upper case name is attached to the previous word."

>18 EPsonNY: I hope you get to look at it. I am finally proud and delighted with my 5 volume Tolkien set. All books are 10 x 8. The Silmarillion is now accessible with the 45 illustrations of Ted Nasmith; previously I found it too dense and unreadable. If I were younger I would get these leather-bound.

>22 HugoDumas: Nice! Yes, what a great idea to take those Allen Lee and Ted Nasmith illustrated editions and have them leather bound.
