Cheli is ROOTing again 2022

Well, I met my goal again in 2021 and far surpassed it. I'm going to leave my goal to 84 - 7 ROOTs per month because I'm really hoping that the world will be better in 2022 and that I'll get a bit of traveling in but I'm only going if it's safe.

In 2021 I started a purging project to eliminate books that I know I will never read and I managed to wipe out a good number. I am going to try to continue that project in 2022. My goal here is 50.

Goal:
E-Books/Net Galley 66 Books off my e-readers or NetGalleys downloaded to my Tablet, or Books on my PC Kindle App.
Audio books 12 - Books downloaded to my PC/MP3 or NetShelf.
ARDs 6 - Books that are already sitting on my shelves or ARCs/ERs awarded to me in 2021
Purge 100 from any source

For every ROOT successfully cleared in 2022 I put $1 in my book bank so that at the end of the year I have money for new books! I've completed my wish-list but there may be a few more before the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, I will place my order with Amazon for my e-book acquisitions and will have additional books to count. The book bank total may be added to if I receive any gift cards for Christmas. I have $105 in my book bank. I did over spend in 2020 so I need to be more frugal with my book bank dollars in 2021.

Starting Tallies:

Tsundoku (My Unread) = 88 (83 less than last year!!)
PC Downloads/MP3/NetShelf = 76 (down 32)
NOOK = 113 (reduced 64)
Tablet/Kindle = 133(up 2)

STARTING ROOT TOTAL = 410 (decreased 180)

NetGalley/ER/ARC Awards in 2022 - 73

Total ROOTS = 483
Even though it shows my ROOTs decreased 180 from the total for last year, I did clear a bunch more, removing books from my wishlist as well. I acquired 116 books - 86 of which were ARCs that automatically go into the ROOT total. Leaving 30 books as new, so the decrease of 184 is massive, right?

ETA - books I had in 2021 but failed to catalog. These numbers will be tweaked with last day acquisitions and finally reading totals.
Considering that I added 112 books in 2020 and I have a starting total 184 less than last year's adjusted total - I have reduced my ROOTS well!

I again am aiming to read at least 50% of the new books added in the new year. I did very well in 2022 with nearly 60% of my acquisitions read! That's the best I ever did!

I'm starting the year with $310 in my book bank from 2021 but I'm reducing that by $19.43 for my budget overrun last year. So my starting total is $290.57.

UPDATE - remaining balance as of 12/22/22 $241.55

Once again I will be tracking how many new books enter my catalog and the target percentage to be read in the current year will remain at 50%.

Now that my husband and I have signed on the dotted line to have a new house built for our retirement, I definitely need to get moving on my purging project. The new house will not have the shelf space that I have now in my library.

Last year I started the purge and I thought I did pretty well, but there were those books that I really enjoyed and was reluctant to part with. Now I know I need to find them a new home.

My sister strained her arm and is unable to hold hardcover books so I am gifting her some of my favorite paperbacks. That will be my April purge this year. I think that 50 some should keep her occupied while she recovers.

May was pretty busy for me - start of preparations for my knee replacement surgery (scheduling all sorts of appointments), 10 day vacation cruise to the southern Caribbean, a return to an anniversary celebration (48 years with the sweetest man on earth), a short road trip to see 2 granddaughters in their dance recital, my birthday celebration and finally home to more appointments!

I still managed to read 13 ROOTS! Not all great but I did enjoy most.

Here is the list:

Murder on the Half Shelf

Double Chocolate cookie Murder

Hi Chéli. I've been neglecting the ROOTers for some time. Live, sunny days, babysitting the grandkids and doing volunteer work for the library at Lonne's school. And reading of course. Today is a rainy day with some thunderstrokes. A perfect Sunday for reading al those neglected threads.

I'm impressed by the amount of ROOTs you have been reading in >37 cyderry:.

When is your surgery planned. I've had my knee replaced some years ago and very happy with it. I would do it again in a second when the need arises again. I think that won't be long because my other knee is now doing stupid things.

>38 connie53: My surgery is scheduled for Monday June 20th.
I've put the surgery off during COVID but now the knees are screaming for attention. Ever since I've been on the doctor's schedule, the knee that is going first has decided that it doesn't have to be nice anymore. On my cruise last month I had a motorized scooter so I was okay but when I went to see Bella and Maddie's dance recital, I was suffering in the amount of steps that I had to take.

I know that this is just the start because the other knee will need to be replaced as well and I really would prefer to have my orthopedic surgeon here do it before we move. So probably in the next 12 months both knees will get some attention.

Everyone that I have talked to who have had their knees replaced were pleased with the results so I am looking forward to some relief.

I hope you will feel the same relief as I did, Chéli.

Well, I'm in major recovery mode from my knee replacement.
Here's what I looked like after 4 days. The bruises are popping!

Needless to say my concentration is a bit off.

Well, I was progressing in my recovery pretty well, until I took a ride (1500 miles total in 5 days) to pick out all the finishes and options for the new house. Needless to say, I was hurting by the time I got home. My sweet husband was brilliant in that he brought an ice bag along on the trip so whenever he could get it refilled, I had ice in the car. My knee was swelling again and fortunately, I had no PT scheduled for several days. I spent most of them with my leg elevated with ice. Saw the doctor again last week, and he advised I not make the trip again for awhile. Tim went back this weekend without me. Thanks to technology I was able to be on the framing walkthrough remotely.

>50 cyderry: Ouch, yes, I think that is sensible to stay local for a while. I hope the swelling and pain reduces very soon.

Well, since it appears that our move to South Carolina will be in February/March timeframe, I decided that I needed to start accelerating the purge. Today, with my husband's help, we packed up 168 books, read and unread to be donated. My TBRs are now under 300!

My husband said that he was amazed that I was giving so many away. Most of the 168 were books that I've read (146). I realized that with the large number that I still haven't opened that chances of a re-read were slim and that someone else would hopefully enjoy them.

So far this year I've ROOTed 245 books - purged 152, read 93. There's probably more to come since I will have to pack the rest of the ARDs (real books) but I haven't reviewed the audios and e-books yet.

>54 cyderry:. Amazing work Chèli. I suppose I will have to do that sometime in the future too. I can't burden the kids with doing that in the end.

I had a lazy Saturday while my husband went to the Maryland /Ohio State football game.

I decided to review my list of series that I read and see if I could cut it down. I started the day with 171 series as active.

I identified 5 series as finished.
I identified 5 series as ones I've decided not to start. Reducing my wishlist by 28 books.
I removed 21 audio books from my downloads and abandoned their 7 series.
I am abandoning another 21 series resulting in removing 136 books off my wishlist
I archived 4 e-books for abandoned series.

All in all, I removed 38 series from my list reducing my TBRs and wishlist. Most of the books/series had been sitting on my "shelf" for close to 10 years without any real desire to pick them up again. I was surprised that some were very well known but didn't stir me to try again.

Hi Chèli, Happy New Year to you!

I haven’t been as active in the group this year as I’d have liked but managed to reach my goal with a last minute surge! Thank you for being a super administrator, it’s a big task, and I’m sure I’m not alone in appreciating your hard work.

You’ve had an eventful year! I hope the knee surgery recovery is going well and the house move goes smoothly in the Spring. I also purged a lot of books when I moved house, but suspect the numbers are creeping up again ;)

All the best for 2023!
