So, here I am all ready to go ROOTing again in 2022.

Hope everyone has a great New Year and have a great reading year too!

ROOTs for 2022 will be the same as for previous years - any hard copy book (paperback or hardcover) that I own as of December 31, 2021, will qualify as a ROOT for 2022 if it gets read.

I completed 2 ROOTs so far this year - End the Struggle and Dance with Life by Susan Jeffers and We Speak No Treason: Book 1 - The Flowering of the Rose by Rosemary Hawley Jarman.

We Speak no Treason is going to be a complicated book to post. It is a list book, but I didn't realize when I added it to the list that it was a book in 2 parts. Since the books I have are 2 separate paperbacks, I will count them as 2 ROOTs, but they will only be 1 list book.

I now need to read Book 2 for next month.

I finished We Speak No Treason: Book 2.

I have also started (just barely) Three Steps to a Strong Family. It is not as intimidating as I feared. I may or may not finish it before the end of the month.

Woot! Unexpectedly finished Three Steps to a Strong Family after all. So, that's four ROOTs so far this year. Next up is Quest for Fire which is really small. I will likely finish that before the end of March. I have heard it isn't all that good - or at least the movie supposedly wasn't (I never saw it). But it probably won't be too bad since it is so short.

Hi Lora! I've been away from LT Threads for a while. Too much going on in my life the last months. I see you are still going strong with your reading. Happy weekend!

I did finish Quest for Fire, probably about 3 weeks ago. It was not as bad as I was afraid it might be, but generally speaking I much preferred Clan of the Cave Bear, like the people reviewing the movies. Actually I liked all of the Earth's Children books that I have read so far. They are some of my favorites.

I am now working on Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. I keep being intimidated by this book, even though what I have read so far is very interesting. I have liked all his books since Flow, but what usually happens is that I have a hard time getting into them at the beginning, and then the end is just wonderful. This one is pretty interesting in the first parts too though.

Reading Stats – 2022 so far

I have started a new book on Scribd, so hopefully there will be a new category with numbers pretty soon. Also, I have 3 new books going right now, so slowing progress on Kindle and ROOT books, but moving out in that category.

Finally finished Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention. This was a pretty good read, and I doubtless could have finished it earlier if i hadn't spent so much time reading other things. I am reading several large books on Kindle right now. But on the plus side, I finished all the new books I had, so can get back to focusing on the Kindle books at least.

The next ROOT will be Favorite Folktales from Around the World. This one is pretty large, but should be fun.

I finished Favorite Folktales from Around the World a couple of weeks ago. For the past 3 or 4 days I have been reading The Association, but probably won't finish before the end of the month. This one is really good. It's a horror story where the villain is ... (wait for it) ... an evil homeowners' association. Not as gross as some horror books I have read, but definitely one of the scariest despite taking place in an absolutely beautiful location. I am still waiting to find out whether the board of this homeowners' association is entirely human. They may not be.

Hi Lora. I've been neglecting the ROOTers for some time as I did before. Live, sunny days, babysitting the grandkids and doing volunteer work for the library at Lonne's school. And reading of course. Today is a rainy day with some thunderstrokes. A perfect Sunday for reading al those neglected threads.

>20 LoraShouse: No, it didn't. With the weather so nice I've been reading a lot outside in the garden.

25LoraShouse

I finished The Association fairly early in the month. The homeowners' association (in the opinion of the main character - horror writer who confessed that if he had been writing the story, he would have made them aliens) seems to be human after all, but just barely. They frankly look sort of alien. And they worship their rules and regulations as if they were gods. This is what finally does them in. The MC thinks of a rule he can accuse them of breaking, and the other residents tear them apart.

I also read a book from my list titled The Courtship Gift. I suppose this one is also a thriller, because there is never any question who has done the murder in the beginning of the book. It is a while before the police and the widow figure it out. But the main element of suspense is what will happen to the widow once he gets his hooks into her. Apparently, he has done similar things before - killed associates in order to get access to their women.

I am now working on Secrets of the Savvy Consumer. I figured this would be more of a hint type book, but it is more of a philosophy of how to save money when you are buying things. The edition I have is pretty old - like 1995 or something, so a lot of it is out of date, and some of the interest comes from remembering what the consumer landscape was like then. It's possible that there are updated versions available, but it's almost too late to do me much good anyway. I have already made all the mistakes. However, it is less annoying than i expected.

So far, I have finished 2 more ROOTs during July - Secrets of the Savvy Consumer and The Falconer. I wittered on about Secrets of the Savvy Consumer last month, so don't need to say much more about it now. The Falconer was pretty good. Also, short. I finished it in one day. It is the story of a not-so-old woman who falls in love with a man who is interested in the ancient art of falconry after she discovers she has inoperable cancer, and less than six months to live.

I finished Stigmata by Phyllis Alesia Perry about two weeks ago. This was an interesting story about a young Black woman who became sort of gifted (or cursed) with being able to see scenes from the past after receiving a trunk that had belonged to her grandmother containing her great-great grandmother's diary and a quilt.

I am now about halfway through with Blackwood Farm by Anne Rice - part of The Vampire Chronicles. These are always interesting, but this one is a little long. I may or may not finish it before the end of the month.

29LoraShouse
aug 30, 2022, 12:56 am

I did actually manage to finish Blackwood Farm before the end of the month too. Poor Quinn Blackwood! He had so many issues with ghosts, spirits, witches, Vampires, etc., not to mention his own family! it's a wonder he managed to last as long as he did! This was possibly the best Vampire Chronicles book since Memnoch the Devil.

The next ROOT up is Bag of Bones by Stephen King.

Finished Bag of Bones a couple of weeks ago. I am now reading on Give Us This Day, the last book of the God is an Englishman series. This one is a ROOT but not a list book.

It looks like i will be doing well in all my categories for the year except Kindle Books. And library books, of course, since I am still without a library.

I have one more audiobook of the 30 I put on this year's list left to listen to. Since it is a Christmas book (I think - The Christmas Train by David Baldacci), I added a couple of more audiobooks so I will have something to listen to while I work in the kitchen for the next couple of months. In honor of Queen Elizabeth, my next audiobook will be Mrs. Queen Takes the Train. This sounds like a fun book, possibly a children's book. I expect it will be a little like the movie Roman Holiday, but don't know for sure.

I finished Bag of Bones by Stephen King. A decent book for a Halloween read if you are looking for something like that, even though it doesn't take place around Halloween. It does, however, have a lot of ghosts.

Having finally reached by ROOT goal for this year, I am currently reading Let's Roll by Lisa Beamer. This is a story from 9/11. A little heavy on the Christian experience in the first part, but I just finished reading the story of what happened on flight 93, and that part was pretty good. This book was not on my list, but my sister gave it to me shortly after it came out. She apparently went to church with Lisa Beamer and bought the book to support her. She's good like that.

I added a couple of extra ROOTs during November. I finished Let's Roll that I started last month. And I also read The Cat Who Sang for the Birds by Lilian Jackson Braun, another book in The Cat Who ... series. I bought this one at a library sale a few years ago but wasn't sure if I had already read it. I listened to several audio CDs from that series before I got my Kindles, in no particular order, and wasn't sure if i had heard this one or not. I remembered the main character, James Qwilleran, taking his cats out to the gazebo he built for them at the beginning and end of the book, but I think that scene was repeated in several of the other books as well. I didn't remember any of what happened in between, so maybe I didn't already listen to this one.

Anyway, it's done now.
