Does anybody know a female author who writes mysteries in the hard-boiled style?

To try out different authors and see which you like, you might want to check out A Hell of a Woman: An Anthology of Female Noir (edited by LT author Megan Abbott). It's a bunch of short stories, but you can get an idea of the authors' writing styles and focus your search on the ones you enjoy.

I second the motion on Dorothy B. Hughes! Some of her books have recently been reissued. What about V.I. Warshavsky by Sara Paretsky -- she's pretty hard-boiled, too.

Here's a good recent nonfiction book on the subject: Hardboiled and High Heeled: The Woman Detective in Popular Culture by Linda Mizejewski.

Touchstones wonky today.

Our local librarian did a list of noir authors and, although I have not read any of these, the following are the women she listed:

Carol Anne Davis
Patricia Hall
Betty Webb
