My book collection focuses primary on navy and air force actions in the Pacific theatre of World War II.

Recently, however, I acquired and read some excellent books on U.S. army campaigns in the same theatre.

Fire and Fortitude: The US Army in the Pacific War, 1941-1943 by John C. McManus

Island Infernos: The US Army's Pacific War Odyssey, 1944 by John C. McManus

The relief of Major General Ralph Smith, United States Army, from the command of the 27th Infantry Division during the battle for Saipan on June 24, 1944, by Lieutenant General Holland Smith, United States Marine Corps, is covered at length in the second volume. John McManus is very sympathetic to Major General Ralph Smith in this episode.

A third volume by John McManus of the U.S. Army campaigns in the Pacific will be published in the future.

I also enjoyed cross-referencing John McManus' books with a related book, Commanding the Pacific: Marine Corps Generals in World War II
by Stephen R. Taaffe.

>1 suburbguy: Have you read any books by Eric M. Bergerud. I found his "Fire in the Sky: The Air War in the South Pacific" and "Touched with Fire: The Land War in the South Pacific" to be both scholarly and easy to read. He focuses mostly on the experiences of the soldiers and airmen, using their personal experiences to analyze the tactics and strategies used in the South Pacific.
