Thought I'd start a new thread, the first one was taking a little while to load...

since maggie's opened the door, I'll share this picture of Pippin sleeping when he was 8 weeks old, tattoo and all...

That is so funny. His little pink belly! and the grey/black fur surrounding it looks like a theatre curtain, and his little whatisit looking like a performer....

hehehehe

To Jodyreadseverything: I'm not sure exactly WHAT Dashiell and Piper are! I know Piper is part Papillion but there is another breed mixed in there somewhere.
My father found her curled up under their central air unit. She was covered in fleas, anemic and starving. I came to get her and nursed her back to health. We have NO idea where she came from but she is a VERY special little girl.

I just recently adopted Dashiell from a rescue group and he was found at a local animal control facility only two days away from euthanasia.
They couldn't decide what he was. First they said Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, then they said Japanese Chin. I think he's part Pekingese part something else.
He's 100% awesome, though!

He certainly is, well, they both are really. Poor little guys, I'm so glad they found you.

Tigger (a 15-year-old Pointer) recently developed a nasty infection, but she's recovering. Link to a picture within that post.

Not getting any pics, Linkmeister, but who could fail to love any dog called Tigger, especially a 15 year-old pointer (I LOVE old dogs!! Come to think of it, I love pointers too.)

Booksloth, the words "a little worse for wear" in that post at my blog link to a picture at Flickr.

We named her Tigger because she bounced when we got her. Not so much anymore, but hey, I don't do it as much either. ;)

11Booksloth

Bless her! I guess that's what happens when you bounce them! ;-)

We are currently astonished at her recovery (crossing all manner of fingers). Before she got the bandage/cast she was limping terribly and could barely get up and down a single inch-high step into the kitchen; now she's striding along quite well, and eating like crazy.*

*'Course, giving her wet food for the first time in her life might have something to do with the latter.

Pippin was being a little vocal last night...

He's got all his shots now and we're going for our first walk today in the dog park woo hoo!!! Should be fun :-) Then next Tuesday puppy kindergarten starts. She had to delay, because there weren't enough registrations, but now there are.

MDLady, Tiny looks like such a sweetheart :-)

Pippin is so cute in that picture. Is he singing?

I can't wait to hear about his first walk. Scottie was so amazed at the whole range of sights, sounds and smells that she wore herself out very quickly trying to investigate them all at once.

By the time we got her home she was so tired she fell asleep with he face flat on the floor but her bottom stuck up in the air. She flopped down eventually and slept for about six hours, woke up just long enough to wolf down all her dinner and then slept though the night for the very first time.

Well, the first walk didn't go very well. We met up with another very rambunctious puppy who was very happy to see Pippin. Pippin was happy too at first. But other puppy was a bit too rambunctious and frightened Pippin who yipped and hid behind my legs. :-(

So, we tried again today, there were a couple of smaller dogs out and the meetings went much better, everybody was happy. Pippin came home all excited and pooped out. He's now sleeping contentedly and I think will be out for awhile.

I'm really looking forward to him starting his training, this socialization will be very good for him.

#17, yes Jody, Pippin has the most melodic voice, he can make the most amazing noises! In that picture he's almost yodelling ;-) hehehe

21QueenOfDenmark
apr 18, 2008, 5:31 pm

Oh, poor Pippin being scared. My aunt's border terrier Max was very frightened of Scottie when they first met. He spent most of the afternoon draped around the neck of anyone sitting down trying to stay out of her way. Now he chases her, barking, until she turns around and then he runs away again. It's like a doggie version of What Time Is It, Mr Wolf?

I'm glad he is getting a bit more confident now. I wish I could here him yodel!

22maggie1944
apr 18, 2008, 9:28 pm

I'll send Greta Garbo right over to explain to Pippin how to play with the big dogs. She has been practicing with a 80 lbs. Lab puppy for about a week now. You run really fast, scream bloody murder, and hide under the patio furniture. Then you venture out again and tease the big puppy into chasing you again so you can run and hide under the furniture again. Everyone gets tired and maggie is happy.

Nicky stays indoors and barks at all the rough play. Sometimes he goes out and tries to explain to all four dogs that running around is not dignified. They ignore him.

Life is Good.

23katylit
apr 19, 2008, 2:24 am

Yes, this dog playing sounds like so much fun and I'm very anxious for Pippin to get the hang of it. What Time Is It, Mr Wolf? sounds good, and running, barking and hiding under the patio furniture sounds very promising too! ;-)

Poor Daisy never did learn to play and I feel so sad for her. When we play with Pippin she just barks and looks like she wants to play but doesn't know how. We keep trying to show her different ways, throwing a ball, tug of war, she just stands there and looks at us, or barks. Being a rescue dog, I don't know her history that well, so don't know why she doesn't play.

I'll keep you posted on how puppy kindergarten goes on the 24th.

>22 maggie1944:: maggie1944, our lab puppy Woody uses a similar technique with his older and larger companion, Lily. He runs up to her, gets a big mouthful of ear, and the chase is on. Then Woody usually does a "baseball slide" under his favorite chair (the same place he goes when he has found something the humans don't want him to have).

The only problem is, at ~5 months he's now considerably larger than when he first perfected this technique. He fits under the chair ... just. And has to make like a snake to get out.

25maggie1944
apr 19, 2008, 8:12 am

katylit - Nicky, my rescue puppy, doesn't really know how to play either. He also just runs around barking when the other dogs play. Sometimes he'll chase but it doesn't seem like he's playing. I call him Officer Nicky because it seems like he is saying, "OK, everyone, calm down, just calm down."

The lab puppy (aged 2 years) is very funny and can even get the old guy (a chocolate lab, about 13) to play some. I certainly can see why labs are favored dogs although I am made nervous by their size, weight and propensity to throw themselves around. Sometimes it is hard for this little old lady to stay on her feet but I have accomplished looking like the human in charge so far. One more week to go.

I've been thinking about you maggie, with 5 dogs - it is 5 isn't it? Wow!! Yes, bigger dogs seem soo much bigger now since we've had our schnauzers. It's what one gets used to I guess.

Jody, I saw a family with a scottie puppy last night and thought of you. They were all playing together in the front yard, having a wonderful time, the puppy running from mum to dad to child to child. Very cute puppy, hadn't grown into it's ears yet. I love scotties. :-)

27maggie1944
apr 19, 2008, 12:35 pm

yes, indeedy, 5 dogs. The Labs: Ben, elderly chocolate lab who likes to sleep right next to me at all times; Buck, middle aged black lab who is nice but must eat by himself; Jake, 2 year old black lab who is a big clown and makes me laugh when I am not yelling at him; now, my dogs: Nicky, 12 year old miniature schnauzer who believes it is his duty to keep peace and quiet and so he barks a lot to tell us about it; Greta Garbo, the almost 4 year old bitch. The only bitch in the house. When we all walk down the long narrow hall way Greta leads the way and I and the four others follow her. She likes to play with Jake until he scares her.

It is snowing here today and the labs are lovin' it.

Mostly it is fun but sometimes it is a bit overwhelming and I want some personal space back. They even like to talk to me when I am in the bath tub. (-:

Katy, it's been so long since I saw a scottie puppy, I'm jealous. I love them when they run because their legs are so short and they do that scooting movement as they try to turn. And I know what you mean about the ears, Scottie had this little stubby ears one day and tall ears the next.

A few of my favourite pics of Leo; the first being my computer's wallpaper and the last being the last ever picture taken of him which my daughter took with her phone and sent to her siblings. She caught Leo with me in a typical pose in which I think Leo was demonstrating who owns who! You see Leo was not the only dog in the house. My daughter insisted on getting a dog of her own, a Border collie pup Sam but Leo stayed the dominant dog.

In that case, not only is he gorgeous, but he's welcome to come and play with Skeelo who often gets picked on by smaller dogs (I think they're trying to prove something).
He nearly had his nose removed last night by a Patterdale who gave out all the signs of being friendly then suddenly flew into psycho mood.
Luckily he's getting a bit quicker at dodging out of the way at last.

And PS - can anyone tell me why I'm still typing this post all on one line?

Love all the new pictures. Number 41 just cracks me up. I'm in that position many a time with Toto curled up on my chest. Nobody around to take our picutres though :-( (wait a second, maybe thats a good thing LOL)

#44- I let out a loud "right on" when I read your post. I'm constantly pausing and zooming in on DVD's to check out the book titles. I especially love checking out the books on the shelves. Why? I have no idea. I assume that the books on the shelves are just put there by a set designer or some such person. Unless the bookshelves are in the background of a read persons home or office who is being interviewed, and not a character in a movie, it probably doesn't make much sense for me to check out the books. I'm telling ya we must be nutz!!! We should start a thread on this topic....

50QueenOfDenmark
jun 17, 2008, 5:39 am

Booksloth and LJ - I do that too. When we went to the cinema to see Closer there we a couple of great shots of bookshelves, the actors we having a serious conversation and in the midst of it all was me saying "I've got that one...and that one...and that one..."

I don't care if the person is real or fictional, I like to know what they read. My other thing is dates in books. I am always delighted to find my birthday mentioned but I also like to find the same date that I am reading the book mentioned too. On Friday (June 13th) I started a book whose first line was "Saturday, June the 13th" so I was really pleased, it was so close to being exactly that day but at least the date was right. The book, since you will wonder, was The Boy Who Kicked Pigs by Tom Baker.

This is Toto with his driving goggles on. They are called Doggles. They came about when I was bringing him to the vet for his annual rabies shot and the vet was outside when we drove up and he saw Toto's head hanging out the car window. When I got him he scolded me on how unsafe it is for many reasons. The number one reason he gave was that he has 1 or 2 patients a week that come in because debris has flown up in the dogs face and lodged in their eyes. He recommended if I choose to have his head out the window to use these goggles. Toto knows we are going to the park or beach when he has to suffer through wearing them. He keeps them on for the ridem but then tears them off when we get to our destination. Funny thing was the first few times I put them on him, he figured out if he yawned really wide they wound up flipping up to the top of his head. How clever is he? For shorter rides he is just harnessed in and no head out the window. I also have his leash on and secured so when I allow him to put his head out the window there is no chance he can jump out.

52Booksloth
jun 18, 2008, 5:59 am

Toto can drive? That is amazing! He looks unbeatably cool in those goggles!

Just being serious for a sec, don't forget it's not only his eyes that can be hit by flying debris.
(Though I do wonder sometimes if god didn't mean dogs to hang their heads out of car windows,
why did he make it look so cute?) Is anyone else having the problems I am with this thread, BTW (very wide page)?
If so, does it mean we should start a new one? And if that's also so, does anyone know how to do those clever little link thingies?

53ljreader
jun 19, 2008, 2:31 am

LOL Yes Toto can drive. He drives me to drink, but in a good way. Also yes to problems with the width of this page, and no on how to do those clever little link thingies. (Yes I do realize that other things can be hit other then his eyes with fying debris which is why I only let him put his head out when we go to the park (maybe sometimes the beach) since its a very short ride through a residential area, hopefully we'll remain lucky) Actually he perches his front paws on the side mirror and his head on top of his paws, and just enjoys the wind...He gets quite a few people who want to snap his pic with their camera phones, which just makes his blossoming ego soar...lol

Some help on creating links can be found in WikiThing, here. Scroll down to the section titled, "How do I put links in a Talk message?" Is that what you're looking for, Booksloth?

The page is wide for me as well; sometimes that happens when a large-sized photo is included but all the ones on this thread fit quite nicely in the "normal" screen width so ... no idea.

55QueenOfDenmark

I love Toto in his doggles. Scottie would never wear them, but then, Scottie would never stick her head out of the car window. She hides under the seat instead.
