JULY ROOT - Progress Thread

This month let's take a vacation and read by the water!

In the Northern Hemisphere, summer is upon us but are we relaxing by the ocean, cruising the waterways or lounging by the pool? Everyone has their own preferences, but water seems to add the enjoyment of reading a good book.

Apparently there are even waterproof books! Who knew?
What's your preference?

How do you waterproof your books for summer reading?

Hope you are on the mend Cheli.
I have completed my first root for this month, An Unsuitable Match by Joanna Trollope, taking me to 28/48. Unfortunately I cannot update my ticker thread, after it being fine last month, it is flashing again this month. So frustrating!

>1 cyderry: I don't waterproof my books for summer reading. If I am in close proximity to water I leave the books in a safe, DRY place.

I do like reading on a balcony facing the ocean, coffee within easy reach!

jul 3, 2022, 11:40 am

>2 cyderry: Thanks, Chèli, all this water makes me feel much cooler already! I love the terrace of our usual holiday apartment on Föhr wich looks out on the North Sea. No need for water-proofing books there.
And I have finished my first ROOT for July: A mind to murder.

11readergirliz

#17 for the year and #1 for July: The Thorn Birds by Collen McCullough. I began reading it in mid-June and finally finished it- my copy had 673 pages!

>8 HelenBaker: I finally made it up the stairs this morning and after resting in my own bed for a few hours I maneuvered myself, with Tim's help, into the shower and luxuriated under the hot water for at least 20 minutes, washed my hair and body thoroughly. I fell almost human again!

I couldn't have managed these 2 weeks without my wonderful husband.

I have recently read two books:

Shusaku Endo : Silence
Jon Krakauer : Under the Banner of Heaven

Both excellent and I will need to sit down properly and right my thoughts on them. I actually even noted quite a few passages in the Krakauer which I haven't done in a while. My theory that I needed a proper nonfiction to revamp my reading motivation seems to have proven correct as I have already chosen my next book to read, another nonfiction.

I'm two stars ahead of my ROOTS reading goal and yet this has definitely been a less than stellar reading year. Hoping to start having more memorable reads here on out.

After a distressingly long reading slump, I have now finished my third ROOT for July — Greetings from Asbury Park by Daniel Turtel.

20benitastrnad
jul 10, 2022, 10:09 pm

I was amused by the pictures of people reading in the water. I have seen almost all of those examples at my local swimming pool! I read my books while sitting in the shade far away from the pool. I ruined a paperback book once because I was sitting too close to the pool and got splashed. It soaked the book. Even though that happened - I love reading at the pool.

I've also just added #39 to my own ticker (I actually read it in June, but for some reason completely forgot to add it to my thread). Rather than muck up all my figures, I'll just count it as my 4th ROOT for July.

I've finished two more ROOTs for July: Amongst Our Weapons, the latest in the Rivers of London series, and The Lone Pilgrim, a collection of short stories by the marvelous (and sadly no longer with us) Laurie Colwin.

That makes 5 ROOTs and 6 books total so far in July, so perhaps my prolonged reading drought is well and truly over. *fingers crossed*

I finished Mold In Dr. Florey's Coat: The Story of the Penicillin Miracle by Eric Lax. Alexander Fleming might have discovered penicillin but he never did anything with it. It was Howard Florey and his team who turned the penicillin mold into the miracle drug it became and then gave it to the world. This was an amazing story and I am so glad I read it.

#18 for me was The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, and it would have been a 4 star book for me, but the ending was (unpopular opinion alert!) awful and contrived. It felt like I had put in all this work and was ultimately disappointed! It may be enough for me to swear off Kristin Hannah, as I have previously read The Great Alone and didn't like that one, either.
