Logo Discussion

Redigerat: aug 16, 2023, 3:25 pm

I wanted to start this chat separate from the poll, as I don't want to spoil the poll for folks who haven't taken it yet. If you haven't, go do it first before reading further here.

The current poll includes a number of logo designs. Here they are below, for ever how long this image link remains viable.

As a designer myself I think it could be useful to have some group discussion on this.

Overall I applaud the design aesthetic and typeface choice (Palatino?). I lean strongly to the letter pairing used in the 2's, as the 1's encourage me to misread the C as a G.

I personally really like A2, the contrast of the angular border with the curves of the letters is appealing. So too is the negative space. The round logos are fine as well, though they have a bit of an echo of the Folio Society cameo. Whether or not that's a good thing is up the individual.

What do you all think?

EDIT: Updated post with a more stable image link (hopefully).

>1 Shadekeep: I totally agree. For me it's also the 2's that work the best, with A2 as my favourite.

aug 16, 2023, 2:34 pm

The A’s look best to me, but I think A2 has a G not A1! So A1 got my nod. I agree that the circular remind one of the Folio Society.

>2 Dr.Fiddy: Excellent taste, as always.

>3 DMulvee: Ha, yes, the G does seem a bit inescapable in either overlap. Perhaps a subtle nod that Consensus Press is also Gone-senseless Press. ;)

aug 16, 2023, 3:52 pm

I wonder if a compromise between the two might work? Something like this?

It sort of suggests the swoop of the P continues behind itself into the C. Doesn't completely obviate the G issue, but gives a bit of a visual cue.

aug 16, 2023, 4:03 pm

If the letters were the other way around something like hint of a Venn diagram symbolizing the consensus would have been great, but as that's not really an option I prefer B2. >1 Shadekeep: I think the angular borders are nice, but I'm not a big fan of the negative space.

aug 16, 2023, 4:29 pm

>5 Shadekeep: If this were an option, it'd be my favorite!

I personally don't think "readability" is really a value that matters in a pressmark. If the C and P are obscured and look like a big swoosh or something that's OK. In fact, maybe better. You don't see the Golden Arches on the highway and immediately think, "That's an M! M as in McDonalds!" I think the beauty of the mark should be the first consideration. I personally find the 1s significantly more lovely than the 2s, which are just sort of two letters overset on each other.

That said, Mark clearly did a great job all-around and any of these would work very well!

aug 16, 2023, 5:20 pm

I like the 2 variant better, and A > C > B.

aug 16, 2023, 5:40 pm

I think the 1 variants are better, but same style ordering: A > C > B

aug 16, 2023, 5:40 pm

>8 grifgon: I agree, and favored either B1 or C1 as I imagine a round pressmark looking best at both the base of a spine and on a title page.

aug 16, 2023, 7:16 pm

The 1s all look like a one -legged pregnant G. My favorite remains B2.

aug 16, 2023, 7:51 pm

Here's an idea: more than one fine/private press has used multiple pressmarks over time. No reason we can't do the same. Pick the three top choices and use whichever one best suits the current book.

In any case, I would REALLY like to see B2 used on Sinuhe.

aug 16, 2023, 9:32 pm

>7 grifgon: Thanks, it's kinda growing on me as well!

>13 Glacierman: Well, if it's going to be tailored for each book, then perhaps draw the letters in a more scribal format, like Demotic? Or, recycling one of my earlier suggestions, stick that sucker in a cartouche.

Some thoughts on this:

While I get the point of many members here who say that Cs in 1s look like Gs, however I think the 1s look better. The problem with the 2s is the intrusion of the C into P's negative space - it draws all the attention into that area, and somehow I'm not digging it. Also, the way the C splits P's negative space seems inconsistent - in A2 the C intrudes less and creates a thinner and smaller left half of the P's negative space and a much fatter and larger right part, creating an effect that seems off to me. In B2 and C2 the C intrudes further, creating a larger left part.

I think the connected 1s are easier on the eye. Not being disjointed and without creating dissonance like the 2s, I think they're more fitting for the Consensus Press. They also look like a tree, and at least for me it brings associations with Tolkien's Trees of Valinor or Norse Yggdrasil.

As to the A/B/C style of the colophon - in isolation, I like the A style, for sure. However, keeping in mind it's not just a random label but a book colophon, I think the As would take up too much space on the spine. So sadly, even though I like them best, I have to put them last.

Now, to pick between the B and the C style, I have a couple of questions. Is it safe to assume that the white color is really going to be simply the spine material/book page? So wheat yellow in our case? And then would the black be black, or possibly blue to match the title (if the title is in blue)?

As of now, although I do think that Bs have FS vibes, it's probably the safer bet. So I'm leaning towards B1 as my first choice, but I'll wait till tomorrow to decide.

>5 Shadekeep: I agree. This is a great alternative! Wish I’d thought of it!!

I think that this treatment should definitely be considered and the poll changed accordingly. I shall work up new versions and send them to the CO top brass tomorrow

To answer the very first query at the start of the thread, the letterforms are based on Romanée

UPDATE: I decided not to wait, so got out of bed, did the new versions and sent them. Time to go back to sleep!

aug 16, 2023, 11:51 pm

Just as an injection here, but my original proposal called for a simple "CP" at base of spine. In blue.

aug 17, 2023, 12:21 am

>17 Glacierman: The CP without rectangle or circle framing would be good for this, I think. When the winner gets chosen I shall create a variant for this purpose

aug 17, 2023, 4:31 am

This discussion got me thinking, what might work well on the spine won't necessarily work well for the colophon. Which one are we choosing here, logo for the spine or the colophon?

aug 17, 2023, 7:15 am

>16 ChestnutPress: Wonderful, glad to be of assistance. And now that you point out Romanée, I see it. Sterling choice!

aug 17, 2023, 10:38 am

>19 filox: I assume for the colophon and/or title page (in future books).

aug 17, 2023, 10:43 am

To my mind, in the 2-series logos, the intruding bottom of the C makes the P look like a stoop-shouldered F.

aug 17, 2023, 10:57 am

>5 Shadekeep: >7 grifgon: I like this idea too!
>16 ChestnutPress: Thanks for taking this up, looking forward to seeing the new variants!

aug 17, 2023, 11:20 am

>21 Glacierman: "I assume for the colophon and/or title page (in future books)"

Interesting. I assumed that first and foremost we'd be picking the logo for the book we're actually printing - and going forward too, but why would the current book be excluded?

Also, I assumed it would be both for the spine and colophon/title pages. Can someone please clarify it? Because it's an important point that would change my vote. If the logo is to be used on the spine, the As would get the last places from me as they would take up too much of the spine. However, if the colophon is to be used only on the internals (title and/or colophon pages), then the As would get the top places as I like the design more.

aug 17, 2023, 11:25 am

>24 elladan0891: The vote is for the general logo, but to answer your query on spine use, I would suggest a simpler version consisting of just the letters.

Redigerat: aug 17, 2023, 11:30 am

>25 ChestnutPress: Thanks! Well, then I guess I'll go ahead and change my vote. Or, perhaps, wait until the poll is modified with addition of your new versions. I assume we will get an updated poll?

aug 17, 2023, 12:42 pm

>26 elladan0891: There should be a new ballot put out shortly. As for the vote, it should be based on logo alone, not possible uses that might be problematic. Variants of the logo will be used anyway, depending on the task in hand.

aug 27, 2023, 5:25 pm

The new ballot is out. No surprise that my logo preferences have shifted now. Will be interesting to see how this round goes.

aug 27, 2023, 5:39 pm

Well, I'll wait for Prof. Parkinson's signature for as long as it takes. IMHO, in voting for his signature one voted for a delay as well. How long a delay? Well, as long as it takes...some things aren't subject to total control. So, either one wants a signature or one does not.

Pressmarks. Well, I think we should just settle on a general theme (like "C & P intertwined") and let the particular designer figure out how to present it, much like the LEC had the three readers which took many forms over the years according the designer's intent.

Limiting us to one pressmark is, I think, short-sighted.
